It is rainy this morning As you walk along look down at the sidewalk Do you see any earthworms If you do then it’s due to the rain The earthworms’ holes burrows have filled with water Since the worms aren’t fish they have to come up for air If you see a worm on the sidewalk maybe you can pick it up amp place it in the grass Soon it will find its way home! The 1st full day of springwas last Wednesday! Welcome spring The 1st day of spring is also known as the Vernal Equinox Vernal means green Many plants are turning green due to the chemical chlorophyll in them Chlorophyll in leaves responds to the sun amp helps make food for the plants Equinox tells us that on this day both day amp darkness are 12 hours each From now onthe daylight lengthens and the darkness grows shorteruntil June 21st That day will be called the Summer Solstice Welcome March!Birthstone: AquamarineFlower: DaffodilHappy St Patrick’s Day! Saturday Pi Day was Wednesday 3/14 Have you heard about pi It is a Greek letter Pi represents a certain measurement of a circle If you measure the circumference the distance around a circle amp then measure the distance right through a circle the diameter you may find something interesting If we divide the circumference by the diameter the answer the quotient is 314 about 3 1/7 This holds true for any circle! So have a piece of pie on Pi Day! Spring Break: March 12-16 Be safe amp kind See you Monday March 19thOur Lausannia Concert was Thursday March 9th at 8:30 am in EPAC It was an upbeat entertaining show! Eat well because tomorrow sacrifice is expectedWelcome February!Birthstone: amethystFlowers: violet amp primroseTeacher Appreciation Weekis this weekWe have many good teachers helping us I did too! Don’t forget to say thank youSchool Spirit Weekwas last week! The Pep Rally was one of the best It isn’t every day you get to see some teachers with piesin the face! It was all in good funMonday: Pajama DayTuesday: Blue amp Gold DayWednesday: Musician DayThursday: Animal DayFriday: Superhero DayHave you heard about the Blue Moon We had a Blue Moon on January 31st What’s that Usually we have one full moon per calendar month For example the full moon in December took place on December 3rd In January we had a full moon on January 2nd And we’ll have another full moon on January 31st The second full moon in a calendar monthis called a blue moon! It doesn’t happen most years But when it does happen that’s what we call ita blue moon!Watch out for all the potholes in the street! Why are there potholes after the ice meltsConsider this: liquid water such as rain or dew may fall down into a small hole in the street or sidewalk If it remains there and if the temperature drops below freezing 32 degree Fahrenheit then the water freezes and turns to iceWhen this happens the iceexpands! It becomes just a little big larger than the water that it was And this expansion cracks whatever it may happen to occupy including streets amp sidewalks So watch out for the potholes Hopefully street crews will fill them upuntil next time! The sky was crisp blue the ground was starkly white Why such a blue sky Why such a white covering on the groundWe know that different colors of light have different levels of energy Blue light has the highest energy of the light we can see — visible light The water vapor in the air vibrates — it moves and scatters — at a speed similar to the blue light that strikes it And the sky appears blueOn the ground the white crystals of snow amp ice reflect all colors not only the blue All colors together appear white So we see a beautiful blue sky and a white covering on the ground Enjoy the beautiful contrast amp stay warm! Dr Martin Luther King Jr National Holiday: January 15 2018Science investigates religion interprets Science gives man knowledge which is power Religion gives man wisdom which is control The two are not opposites they are complimentary — Martin Luther King Strength to Love 1962 Welcome 2018 amp Happy New Year!Welcome January!Flower: carnationBirthstone: garnet Good-bye John Young who died recently Astronaut Young was the only pilot to fly on the Gemini Apollo amp Shuttle missions in the 1960s ’70s amp ’80s He commanded Apollo 16 and walked on the Moon Also he was the first to pilot the Space ShuttleThank you Astronaut Young! There will be a PYP Nuts amp Bolts Informational Meeting on Tuesday January 16th in the Alumni Dining Hall at 8:00 am PYP is the PK-Grade 4 component of the International Baccalaureate Program here at Lausanne Learner Profiles Learning Skills amp Assessments will be presented and discussed During the final week of 2017 this website had just over 2500 visitors Happy New Year everyone! And happy clicking I hope you always find some helpful and useful things here Thursday 12/21 was the Winter Solstice It was also the first official day of winter Daylight for the next week or so will last a mere 8 hours or so in the Northern Hemisphere But below Earth’s equator it is the night that is short Solstice means sun-stand The sun appears to rise and set considerably south of east and west Ancient people believed it just stood thereEarth orbits the sun and Earth is tilted on its axis or center-point at about 23 1/2 degrees This fact accounts for our solstices equinoxes and seasonsWe found our puppy Solstice on the Winter Solstice We named herSolstice! Happy Winter Solstice! On December 17 1903 The Wright Brothers successfully flew their airplane The Flyer over the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk North Carolina They made 4 flights that day You can see their restored Flyer at the National Air amp Space Museum in Washington DC It’s pretty cool! I saw it myself with our Lausanne 8th graders in 1998 It’s a beautiful machine! And if you ever visit Kitty Hawk you can see exactly where they flew — plus a reconstruction of their cabin amp the hangar where they housed their planeThe music was fun Friday morning! Thanks to all our elves and snow-people who shook their jingle bells danced amp sang along!Welcome December!Flower: Poinsettia Birthstone: Blue TopazFactoid: Vanilla is used to make chocolate Factoid: Your brain produces enough electricity to power one 40-watt light bulb for a dayFactoid: The Hubble Space Telescope looks back in time Wellwe have had a few questions about the flying helicopter that we’ve been talking about in 3rd grade They are available at Amazoncom The price is 999 You’ll need to search for flying toy helicopter action toy If you can’t find it come see me amp I’ll show you They are tons of fun quite safe and do require 4 AA batteries Welcome back! Every day can be a day of thanksgiving Let’s be thankful to be back at work — at our home away from homeLausanne! We have a long tradition of giving thanks in America The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 The settlers gave thanks to God for a bountiful harvest and were joined by Native Americans Their leader was William Bradford Later in 1789 President George Washington invited all to give thanks for our new country and Constitution And in 1863 in the middle of the Civil War President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a National Holiday We live in a land of plenty Lausanne is even more plentiful than most places don’t you agree We are all blessed to be here with so many giftsLet us respond with humble thankful hearts Grandparents amp Special Friends Day at Lausanne: Tuesday November 20th Our 1st musical performance began 8:30 am in the Alumni Dining HallCongratulations to Mrs West amp thanks to all students for learning your songs wellMs Ai Ishihara accompanied on piano and I accompanied on guitar Did you see the electric guitar I played It is very old It was made in 1963 amp it is a Fender Stratocaster The other guitar a Guild Songbird is much younger having been made in 1997Did you know that raindropsas they fallare shaped likepancakes Weird But TrueA Farmer from Massachusetts once paddled down a river in a hollowed-out 817-pound pumpkin! We see that there is a frost warning tonight for parts of our area The weather is changing! It is autumn of course The shorter hours of daylight cause the air to cool Less sunshine also causes the leaves to respondless green chlorophyll is being produced The other colors — more subtle — are beginning to be seen If there is frost tonight it is because the air temperature in those places probably away from cities drops to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below It is late October and the daylight hours are growing shorter Earth’s north pole begins to turn away from the sun and the air is cooler Leaves have begun falling Have you noticed Chemicals in leaves known as auxins respond to the shorter length of daylight Green chlorophyll does not get produced as much now and the other colors reds oranges yellows purples begin to show up The were there the whole time! Masked by the chlorophyll they emerge in the fall Tennessee is a beautiful place to experience fall colors WhyWe have a great deal of rainfall 50 to 60 inches per year This rainfall promotes healthy tree growth — and fall color! Monday of this week was Columbus Day Christopher Columbus sailed 3 ships – the Nina Pinta amp Santa Maria on August 3 1492 with the hope of reaching India He landed on what is now Watlings Island in the Bahamas His crew after 10 weeks of sailing was very upset! How would they ever get home Columbus knew the wind patterns very well and used them to sail back to Europe He made 4 voyages in all to the New World Thursday night we saw a full moon In our neighborhood we often hear the hooting of owls We see an occasional bat fly by There’s just a bit of a chill in the dawn air Leaves began to fall in our yard on the street onto the roofEnjoy the change of seasons! On Wednesday of this weekthe Christian church celebrated the Feast of St Francis Have you heard of St Francis Hospital here in Memphis Many Lausanne moms and dads work there It is named after St Francis of the town of Assisi Italy He was a rich young man who gave all he had to the poor He also loved nature and saw God’s glory in all that He created Once St Francis said All the wonderful things and animals in the worldthey are all steps on the ladder to reach God Many people of many different faiths have a soft spot in their heart for Francis You can see a statue of him in front of the hospital The birds are nearby! The change of seasons arrived one week ago today Happy Autumn Friday was the autumnal equinox Day and night are equal: 12 hours of each From now until late December Earth’s North Pole begins to face away from the sun on its orbital journey through spaceThursday is Rosh Hashana the happy Jewish New Year celebrationSo Happy Jewish New Year: Shanah Tova! Enjoy some apples amp honey today This is a very active hurricane season Hurricane Maria has struck Puerto Rico Power is out on the island What was the deadliest hurricane Its name was Hurricane Camille in 1969Yours truly will offer a Saturday Science Program at Collierville Library on Saturday 9/23/17 from 11:00 – 11:45 am for 6 to 10 year-olds We expect to have a wonderful time! The leftovers remnants of Hurricane Irma have come amp gone When it weakened over land it became a cyclone That’s a word that means swirling low pressure as measured with a barometer It brought us about an inch of rainWe are missing some rocks amp minerals from our collection in the lab We are missing iron pyrite sparkly fool’s gold our meteorite from Argentina bismuth crystals lead ore amp turritella several shiny brown/multicolored small fossil stones The rocks amp minerals are for everyone to enjoy Have you seen them We would like to get them back Thank you! Monday was the 16th anniversary of September 11 2001 It was a day of attack on the United States But it was also a day of heroism Please read an account of it under stories on this web site If you get up early try to go outside amp look to the east If the weather is clear then you’ll see a bright shining point of light It is planet Venus! We are blessed with fair weather for the Mid-South this week Before dawn Constellation Orion may be seen in the southern sky But storms are brewing in the Atlantic OceanOften we see powerful hurricanes at the end of summer But why We recall that a hurricane’s fuel is really warm water above 80 degrees Fahrenheit At this time of year the sun has been warming the water for a few months — all summer long This factor contributes to the strength of a hurricane Even if you were to go to Florida in November you could probably still swim in fairly warm waters Water takes a long time to heat up and it takes a long time to cool down Labor Day: A National HolidayOn this day government offices banks amp schools are closed On this day we honor the working people of our country Work — labor — is our gift to others It is really a gift of love from ourselves to the world to help make it a better place Happy Labor Day!Hurricane Harvey hit the east coast of Texas It dropped a great deal of rain Hurricanes may be thought of as heat storms They are caused by the sun’s heating the waters of the ocean Earth’s spinning kicks hurricanes into motion Hurricanes are the biggest storms on the planet It was very good to see so many of our Lausanne parents on Parents Night! The solar eclipse came on Monday August 21st It began over Memphis skies at 11:52 am maxed out at 94 at 1:23 pm and ended at 2:50 pm Clouds were blowing over Lausanne but they did break a few times to the cheers of us all! We were able to see a few minutes of the solar eclipse!Keep your eclipse glasses as a souvenir August is named after the Roman emperor Augustus CaesarThis week in 1939 Judy Garland recorded Somewhere Over the Rainbow It was written by Harold Arlen48 years ago this week in 1969 Neil Armstrong amp Buzz Aldrin blasted off from the Moon to meet their fellow crewman Michael Collins for the return flight to Earth Their Apollo 11 landing site looks the same today There is no wind or rain on the Moon to change even their footprints Ora et labora Do you know what that means It is Latin a language I learned in elementary school for Prayer and work Not a bad motto! It was said by a man named Benedict who lived in the mountains of Italy 1500 years ago His home is still there it is called Monte Casino I visited there it’s very peaceful and beautiful Happy 4th of July!Happy Birthday America We are 241 years old 1776 was 241 years ago There is a star in the summer sky Spica Spica shines brightly Its light travels through space at 186000 miles per second The light from Spica left the star 241 years ago We see that light tonight Spica is 241 light years from Earth To locate Spica find the Big Dipper Then follow the handle of the Dipper away from the bowl The first bright star you see as you follow that curve is Arcturus The next bright star along that curve is Spica We may remember it this way: Discover the Dipper Arc to Arcturus Speed to Spica I am sad to report that our rescued hawk died during the night at the animal hospital I do not know the exact cause but will seek more information from the good folks at the Raptor Center at Shelby Farms I will post more about it when I can A Hawk at SchoolOn Wednesday we saw a hawk on the ground in a nearby yard close to schoolOur security guard Mr Mark and I saw him The bird appeared to have a broken right leg He flew up into a tree His leg was hurt but he seemed to fly well We were able to borrow a ladder amp put a net on him I took him to the Summer Avenue Animal Emergency Clinic We will check on him today! A Bright Star amp the Big DipperTonight after dark we may look to the north about 35 degrees above the horizon The North Star Polaris is there Polaris is not especially bright so you have to look carefully Just to the left west of Polaris is the Big Dipper The bowl of the Dipper points to Polaris If we follow the handle away from the Big Dipper we will find the bright star Arcturus We may remember it with this phrase Arc to Arcturus Arcturus’ name means Guardian of the Bear Arcturus is the brightest star in the northern hemisphere Sirius is brighter but it’s in the southern hemisphere Arcturus is 38 light years away and is about 20 times as bright as our sun Welcome sunshine! Cool winds from the north are bringing us comfortable air with less water vapor less humidity When air is cooler this cooler air cannot contain as much humidity as can warmer airIf you are up very early when it’s still dark look to the eastern sky The bright light is planet Venus It shines with reflected sunlight — off its bright cloud coverHappy 1st week of Summer! The 1st day was marked by the apparent position of the sun in the sky — the sun is highest at this time If you could see the stars behind the sun you’d see the constellation Cancer the crab The sun we say is in the Tropic of Cancer Higher sun in the sky longer days shorter nights That’s summer! The weather is very hot in Phoenix Arizona It may reach 118 degrees today It will be so hot that some airplanes will not fly Why not Warm air has moving kinetic energy It spreads out and becomes thin less dense The wing of a plane needs air to develop lift When there’s not enough air then there’s not enough lift Some planes are groundedSpring is drawing to a close Yesterday was the last full day of spring Official summer begins Tuesday evening It all has to do with the apparent position of the sun in the sky The sun will reach the Tropic of Cancer in the skyits northernmost pointon TuesdayFather’s Day 2017This was the 107th celebration of Father’s Day The idea came from a lady named Sonora Smart Dodd Sonora amp her 5 siblings were raised by her father William Jackson SmartSonora’s mother died in childbirth in 1898 in Spokane WashingtonSonora was in church — on Mother’s Day 1909 Why isn’t there a Father’s Day she wondered So she worked with her local church people and the local YWCA to get them all to recognize a Father’s Day in 1910Sonora knew her father succeeded in raising the family with leadership and loveHappy Father’s Day!132 years ago this week in 1885 France sent the USA a gift: The Statue of Liberty A boat brought her over amp placed her on Ellis Island New YorkWe have probably heard that heat rises Does it It might be better to think of it this way: heavier things push up or buoy up lighter things When sun shines on the ground the ground absorbs heat and the air next to the ground warms up too Warm air moves and is lighter than cool air So cool air sinks pushing up the warmer air Rising air spreads out and becomes cooler Have you ever been up a mountain It’s cooler there! When air is cooler the water vapor comes out of the air It condenses — it goes from gas to liquid droplets We may reasonably expect some rain showers on cooler daysFlag Day — June 14th240 years ago today the Continental Congress approved the design for the American flag — the stars amp stripesYou can see it proudly flying at the Lausanne entrance hanging in Tully Dining Hall and in each Lausanne classroomTonight’s moon phase is waning gibbous A waning gibbous moon may be seen in the daylight in the morningMany years ago this week in 1979 a group of engineers and students designed amp flew a special airplane across the English channel It was called the Gossamer Albatross and it was human-powered The pilot powered the engine by pedalinglike a bicycle This action turned the propeller Although at times the airplane dropped to within inches of the water it made it! We saw a full moon last week A full moon in June is also called a honey moon As a child we had no air conditioning for a time So we opened our back door and closed the screen door Flying bugs would land on the screen Mommy what are they They are June bugs They were flying beetles and didn’t bite I would flick them off the screen and they would come right back I enjoy seeing June bugs and fireflies in June! The sun is in Taurus What does it mean Imagine that today at noon we could see the stars in the sky We can’t of course The sun is too bright But if we could the sun’s background would be a distant constellation known as Taurus the Bull In order for us to see Taurus at night we’ll have to wait until winter The sun appears to move through some special constellations They are called Constellations of the Zodiac Traditionally there are 12 of these13 if you count an additional one known as OphiuchusFair weather is here in the Mid-South The air is cool and dry today Winds from the north brought us these conditions Let’s enjoy it! The FedEx / St Jude golfers surely will tooIf skies are clear tonight look up and to the southwest Jupiter is shining Just to the left of Jupiter are two of its moons Io and Callisto We saw a picture of Io this year When Voyager 1 passed it in 1989 Voyager snapped a picture of Io It showed an erupting volcano On June 5 1752 Benjamin Franklin discovered that lightning is a form of electricity He flew his kite in a storm Electric charge traveled down the string to his key in a jar Have you seen Clark Tower on Poplar Avenue Look closely at the top There are lightning rods designed to attract and arrest lightning boltsthe energy travels down to the ground where it spreads out safely and diffuses That’s a Ben Franklin invention!Rain today Memphis receives 40 – 60 inches of rain per year From the air Memphis is quite a green city Thanks to the rain!Summer is at our doorstep Days grow long nights are short If you are up before sunrise look up and east The bright light is planet Venus Nothing outshines her except the moon and the sun A beautiful sight! Our 1st full week of vacation! How are you spending it Are you helping mom amp dadI hope so!The StormViolent winds uprooted trees and smashed them into homes and power lines in last weekend’s stormMeteorologists tell us they were straight line winds A tornado goes round and round But straight line winds move like a rolling barrel Both can be very dangerousMidtown Memphis and Frayser seem to have been hit the hardestI was helping at a Frayser home with no power A kind lady from the Red Cross gave me lunch and cold water Thanks!!!Memorial DayWe pause to remember and honor those members of our armed forces who gave their lives in the cause of freedomIt is a day of remembrance and honor We enjoy many freedoms and are deeply grateful to those who make it possible Rocket Launch Day4th graders launched model rockets on the field Thursday May 25th The rockets were assembled and painted by their builders and flew very well Winds were strong amp from the south Many rockets flew up to 500 feet high or more apogees But upper level winds blew our rockets into the trees even though we aimed our launches into the wind We only recovered 2 rockets and one exploded It was still quite fun! 3-2-1if you blinked you probably missed it!Our last week of the school year! Every year at this time I notice that even in the middle of winter the hours of daylight are increasing just a littleHave you noticed this Martin Luther King Jr National Holiday wasMonday January 16thDr King was an apostle of nonviolence He believed that if you worked hard enough — with respect for all people — that you could change the world!Dr King said something very interesting about science and religion He said Science investigates religion interprets Science gives man knowledge which is power Religion gives man wisdom which is control Science deals mainly with facts religion deals mainly with values The two are not rivals they are complimentaryWell said Dr King! A Mouse in the HouseYesterday morning I heard a noise in the kitchen It was coming from a trash bag that was hanging on a hookIt was a little mouse!Oh my! What does one do with a hungry mouse nibbling away in the kitchen trashI took the trash bag with our lively little mouse placed it in a large paper bag and took the whole thing outside by the street I watched and waitedWithin a few minutes can you guess what I saw That’s rightthe mouse had escaped the double-bagging just like I thought it would He was scampering around under the magnolia tree!I hope the little critter stays outside!Mice often find their way into houses during cold weatherWe actually used to have a pet mouse in the lab He was cute and he would eat most anything His name was Ralph Mice are very adaptable That’s why they are so successful! Can you see your breath on a very cold day What are you really seeing You are seeing tiny water droplets Your lungs contain warm moist air As soon as this warm moist air hits the cold air outside the water vapor turns to water droplets That’s what we see It’s called condensation I see condensation!I hope you enjoyed our snow day! See you soonWelcome back to school! It is winter amp if you look to the south on a clear night you will see a special constellation: Orion the Hunter! Look for the 3 belt stars in a row That’s Orion’s belt! A shop owner told me that the desert on the outskirts of Bethlehem gets very cold at night It only snows there once every ten years or so he said because it is such an extreme desertBethlehem to me seemed a very ordinary little town Yet it holds a special place in the hearts of those of the Christian faith for it is where Jesus was bornBethlehem’s mother city Jerusalem is likewise a special place for members of 3 great world religions: Jews Muslims and Christians I met many people from all 3 religions I sensed from talking to them and from being with them that everyone deep down wants the same thing really They want peace for themselves and for their childrenHave a blessed holiday!LoveDr Frass Christmas Eve December 24th and the beginning of the celebration of Hannukah both take place on December 24th this yearWhy is this soThe short answer is that Christmas follows the Gregorian calendar and Hannukah follows the lunar calendarThe most recent full moon was December 14th Hannukah follows the full moon The Winter Solstice was Wednesday December 21st Earth’s North Pole points away from the sun So our daylight is shortest our nights are longest And it was the first official day of winter! The sun will appear to rise and set well south for the next few weeks Its arc across the sky is small Daylight is short and precious!CD ReleaseAngels Among Us is available at wwwcdbabycomSearch for Angels Among Us Hope you enjoy the samples!Ice!Have you noticed the ice this morning Air in the mid-south has turned very cold A large cold air mass has come to us from SiberiaSince water can exist in 3 states phases — solid liquid and gas — less heat energy causes water molecules to line up as ice crystalsWe see this solid phase of water — ice — clinging to most everything it touchesBe careful outside amp don’t slip!On this day in 1903 113 years ago! Wilbur amp Orville Wright flew their airplane The Flyer in Kitty Hawk North Carolina It was a cold icy windy morningThe brothers were from Dayton Ohio For 4 years they had tried to make a flying machine that worked After many months of experimenting sometimes with great danger they succeeded! Will amp Orv were the first to figure out how to control their airplane in the air They learned how to pitch yaw and roll the aircraft They made a wind tunnel to test various wing shapes Which shape provided the best left They found out! They tested over 150 miniature wings They knew that the forces acting on small wings would be the very same forces acting on full-sized wingsToday you can see their famous Flyer on display at the Smithsonian Air amp Space Museum in Washington DC And you can see one of their favorite planesthe Flyer III at Carillon Park in Dayton Ohio It was the first version that could fly figure 8’sNext time you fly take a look at the wings The Wrights are responsible! The great friction due to Earth’s atmosphere caused extreme heat He was not worried he said It was a pleasant 70 degrees inside the ship He knew that the spacecraft he Neil Armstrong amp Michael Collins were in The Columbia had an excellent heat shield It was an ablative heat shield Pieces of the shield acutally burnt off and flew past his window taking the heat away And so the heat shield worked well What is a droughtA drought occurs when there is much less rainfall than usualThere has been a fire in Gatlinburg Tennessee in the Smoky Mountains Wind gusts of 90 miles per hour caused the flames to spread quicklyBack to school!Thanksgiving: let it be our constant attitude: An attitude of gratitude! Our daylight grows so short now Earth’s North Pole faces away from the sun It is late autumn for us winter is near For our neighbors in the Southern Hemisphere it is late springalmost summer!Thanksgiving Holidays! We’ve so much to be thankful forWe plan to post some slides from Israel Palestine amp from a distance Lebanon and Syria on the photos section of the website in early DecemberThanksgiving DayI’m thankful for all my Lausanne students Each amp every one is a unique gift! Yom Kippur the Jewish Day of Atonement began Tuesday at sundown It is a holy day on the Jewish calendar It is observed with fasting prayer and remembering that everyone needs forgiveness Why Everyone has done wrong things Everyone needs to change and repent Repent means don’t go the wrong way now Go the right wayYom Kippur Columbus Day was Monday October 11thChristopher Columbus made 4 voyages to the New World North America beginning in 1492In those days many believed the world to be flat Maybe you would sail right off!But Columbus knew the world was round He was an expert at understanding the winds ocean currents and weather He found his way by only using a magnetic compass along with his understanding of the stars sun and moon Hurricane Matthew dumped over 15 inches of rain on North Carolina Then it moved out to sea Matthew had hit Haiti very hard a few days previous to its landfall in the US Hundreds of people lost their lives When hurricanes blow over land they lose part of their energy since their energy comes from the warm water beneath them The hurricane was spinning its way along the east coast of Florida amp then then towards South Carolina and Georgia Its eye has been over the Atlantic Ocean Its arms are affecting millions of peopleMatthew’s winds are strong and steady at 125 miles per hourIt will probably strengthen as it travels over warmer water Many people are headed inland evacuating to avoid the stormy weatherWhat is a hurricaneA hurricane is Earth’s most powerful type of storm There is more energy in a hurricane than there is in 1000 nuclear bombsA hurricane is a heat storm Why We know that the sun heats the Earth But different parts of the Earth heat up differently Suppose there is a lot of hot air over the Sahara desert Winds blow this hot dry air out over the cooler ocean Water evaporates up into the hotter air This warm moist air rises and rises perhaps 5 miles high!Earth is spinning the whole time This spinning causes something called the Coriolis Effect That means that Earth’s spin shoves around all the air And all the spinning causes the air to circle around in a big vortex The whole thing grows and growssometimes into a hurricaneThe air over the ocean is cooler than the air over the desert but it’s still warm enough at times for a hurricane to developSo you see a hurricane is truly a heat storm It is nature’s way of spreading heat energy around the planet The sun’s heat energy was being stored up in warm water amp air for many months Now it is releasedinto a hurricane! Happy Birthday Sputnik! On October 4 1957 the USSR now known as Russia launched the world’s first space satellite It was called Sputnik I It was a 23-inch in diameter ball with antennas on it It was made of magnesium Mg and titanium Ti It orbited Earth at 18000 miles per hourIt looked like a shiny weird beach ball Stargazers could actually see it at night as it sailed over the USATwo generations before STEM it caused thousands of schoolkids to want to study math amp scienceThe object of all this study was to send astronauts to the moon which happened in 1969 Welcome October! Now Westlin’ Windsby Robert BurnsNow westlin’ winds and slaughtering gunsBrin Autumn’s pleasant weatherThe Moorcock springs on whirring wingsAmong the blooming heatherNow waving grainWild o’er the plainDelights the weary farmerAnd the moon shines bright as I rove at nightTo muse upon my charmer Some people have asked about the Black Moon What is itWhen you see the moon you may see various phases Sometimes the moon is full Sometimes it is half-lit Sometimes it is a thin crescent etcThis all has to do with the position of the sun at the time and how the sun may be shining on the moon — as we view it from EarthOnce every 28 1/2 days the moon is dark It is still there of course but the sun is behind it So we do not see the moon — it is dark to our eyesThis happens once every 28 1/2 days It is called a new moonAre you with me so farThis September the new moon took place September 1st The next new moon will take place October 1st at precisely 11 minutes after midnight So strictly speaking there has been one new moon in September When people say there is a black moon they really mean that there are two new moons in a single calendar month such as SeptemberBut that is not the case since the new moon is actually taking place during the early morning hours of October 1st Secret Ocean 3D is playing at the Pink Palace IMAX Theater It is a beautiful look at various small creatures that live under the sea Are these plants and animals important Yes! We receive half of Earth’s oxygen from ocean plants So every other breath we takehas come from the ocean!Exhibits IMAX movies amp planetarium shows are offered to teachersMovies include 3D Ocean amp 3D National Parks The planetarium show is Black Holes It was very windy yesterday morning when we went for our dog-walk at 6 am It was cloudy and coolStudents told me I smelled rain in the air Yes it was true The high humidity water vapor was very present this morning The wind simply blew it away to our north and eastThe wind chased away the clouds It has been a sunny afternoonAren’t you glad the weather changes This is the first full weekend of Autumn May as well celebrate!Congratulations Mrs Sara Li amp Mrs Hong Li and kiddos for presenting a very enjoyable Mandarin Assembly today! It is good to get to know our neighbors in the world Earth travels around the sun in an orbit and it takes 365 1/4 days to do so Earth is tilted on its axis at about 23 degrees That means that for 6 months Earth’s north pole faces the sun For the other 6 months the Earth’s south pole faces the sun Twice a year Earth’s poles are neither facing toward nor away from the sun This Thursday at 9:21 am is going to be one of those times That will bethe first day of autumn! And exactly 6 months later will bethe first full day of spring! An astronomer one who studies stars and such would say precisely that the sun crosses the celestial equator on its apparent journey in the sky to the south ConfusedCome on in amp I can show you with a light a basketball a ping-pong ball and a little imagination! Don’t touch anything in the lab without permissionIf you do so you are risking a conduct markAlways ask if you want to touch something that belongs to someone elseThe Golden Rule is: Do unto others as you would have them do unto youYou would not want someone touching something that belonged to you without asking Do the same courtesy for othersAll students should follow directions to ensure everyone’s safetyIf a situation appears unsafe then students won’t be allowed to do the lab themselvesThe teacher will do demonstrations instead We have a new rug in the lab Have you seen it It’s round and green It’s comfy for us to sit on when we do things down on the floorIt has drawings of 13 science ideas or toolsThey are: a model of an atom a model of a molecule an equation Emc2 2 different flasks a microscope a magnet a calculator a magnifying glass a book a planet a test tube and a helix a model of a DNA moleculeScience has its own special language The pictures on the rug are part of it We use questions and experiments and tools The facts that come from all these reveal to us some truths about our world Isn’t that exciting My dog Toby is a Husky-Chow mix People say he looks like a wolf He does! He’s a tough guy but very gentle Yesterday he went to the dog dentist 3 teeth needed to be pulled I asked our Veterinarian Dr Heartsill How many teeth does Toby have left She told me Don’t worry Dogs have 42 teeth 42 – 3 39 teeth left Plenty of teeth for my Toby!Interestingly human adults havehow many teeth 32Thinking of teeth reminds me of a friend from college He was quite a tennis player and we used to play He would always win but I learned a lot from him Do you know what his name wasDoug Mantooth! On September 13 1959 57 years ago the spacecraft Luna II was the first object to impact the moon Luna II took pictures of the moon as it plunged to its surface It was launched and controlled by the USSR Did you notice our flag this morning It is flying at half-mastIt is a sign of respect Our flag is flying halfway up the pole in honor of the almost 3000 people who died in the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks Tonight’s moon phase is called waxing gibbous The moon appears to be almost a circle and will be a full moon on Sunday September 16th Also in the sky planet Mercury is in inferior conjunction That means that the Earth the sun and Mercury are lined up in a straight line in the Solar System 15 years ago America was under attack 19 bad guys did something very wrong and evil They took over hijacked 4 jet airliners and crashed 2 of them into the World Trade Center in New York City A third jet airliner was taken over and crashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC A fourth jet airliner was taken over and was believed headed for our Capitol Building or perhaps the White House Brave passengers fought the bad guys on that flight and the 4th flight crashed into a field near Shanksville Pennsylvania On that sad day almost 3000 people were killed both on the airplanes and on the ground Despite the evil acts many brave people tried to help including the firefighters of New York who rushed into burning buildings to save others Let us always remember that day Let us ourselves always know what is right and good Let us always choose to do the right and good thing Our families teach us what is right and good Be a good member of your family today September is here Flower: Aster Birthstone: SapphireSeptember:The glory of summer clothes itself in the colors of autumn The first day of autumn isSeptember 22ndAnd the Memphis humidity begins to go away! Homework correction:4T Mrs McBride’s class On HW 3B on problems 4 and 5 I made an error The two minus signs should be divided by signs That is: problem 4 should read 75 divided by 743 not 75 minus 743 And problem 5 should read 105 divided by 1012 not 105 minus 1012Sorry for the error! Welcome September!Soon there will be a chill in the night air the first hint of fallThe three bright stars of the Summer Triangle Vega Deneb and Altair move past the zenith overhead and head for their winter setting in the westThe oldest branch of science is Astronomy Do you have an interest in the stars How do you like science class so farAre we doing some fun things Science can be fun and it often is But it’s not fun all the time — nothing is If we develop discipline training ourselves to do the right thing then we have an opportunity to learn a great deal Those people without self-discipline always end up being told what to do! In science there is always something to learn if we just take the time to look closely Science is just another word for knowing And it is for everyone We learn about the world around us These nights if you look to the west two planets may be visible in the sky if our beautiful Memphis trees don’t get in the way From about 90 minutes before sunset until about 90 minutes after sunset planets Venus and Mercury are visible in the skies above Memphis Venus is the brighter of the two Mercury is fainter and lower in the sky Again trees or clouds may obscure it Obscure means to get in the way ofVenus is quite visible because it is brighter than any star But I think that those folks living downtown might have the best chance of seeing Mercury Look to the west across the mighty Mississippi Venus should be high and bright Mercury should be low and a bit dimmer If you see them you are looking into outer space and into the Solar System! Earthquake in ItalyThere has been an earthquake in central Italy In the towns nearby there were many old and beautiful buildings made of stoneThe earth shook and the stones tumbled and crashed to the ground Some towns were heavily damaged It is difficult for the emergency crews to move in many roads are narrow and winding Sadly 290 people were killed Rescuers pulled a 9 year-old girl from beneath the ruins She had been trapped for 16 hoursItaly has known earthquakes before Italy is also surrounded by water it has a mild climate The Mediterranean Sea is on its west the Adriatic Sea is on its east side and the Ionian Sea is to its south The sea breezes bring plenty of rain that falls on ItalyBecause of Italy’s closeness to the water and because of its rich volcanic soil it is a great place to grow grapes vegetables and many other thingsThis is perhaps one reason why Italian wine and food is so famous We remember the Italian people during this tough and challenging timeI visited Italy in 2012 The people were friendly and there were many beautiful places to visit What are we doing in science class What’s for homework If you click the review tab at the top then the screen should scroll down to review pages for 2nd 3rd amp 4th grade 1st grade is not assigned homeworkNear the review is the homework Generally 2nd 3rd amp 4th graders have homework for each science class that we attend The homework is generally due the next day although sometimes we may allow 2 or 3 days if we’re super-busy On the very last page of this website the contact page is my email address I will always try to answer any emails promptly!Do you like the website It was designed by one of my former 8th grade students Her name is Vanessa She’s all grown-up now and quite successful! Didn’t she do a wonderful job Have you ever been hungry Yes of course we’ve all been hungry Here at Lausanne we are fortunate to have a lunchroom with many good food choices for everyoneI have been very disappointed in many of our students lately particularly in the lunchroom We are wasting a tremendous amount of food Sometimes we take too much and we simply throw it out We may be hungry but none of us are starving Yet we waste perfectly good food Most of the world’s children will go hungry tonight How can we help Perhaps we can start with out own attitudes Let us not be wasteful nor arrogant It is nothing new My grandmother used to tell me Your eyes are bigger than your stomach What did she mean She meant think about it before you load up your tray and don’t take more than you can eat I learned the lessonLet’s improve Did you see the moon this morning Its shape its phase is known as waning gibbous That is its shape has shrunk from a full circle to less than a circle If you saw it then you were also looking out in space in the direction of planet Uranus It was just 3 degrees north of the moon although Uranus is very faint It takes a telescope to see it! When Uranus was first discovered it was named George after the King of England Has it rained at your house today The rain many of us are experiencing this week is from the same large system of rain that has caused flooding in Louisiana The state of Louisiana is southwest of Memphis It rained so much there that many peoples’ homes were flooded Many families have had to leave their homes I know someone who had to leave his home in a canoe! His family includes him and his wife 5 children and a dog They are now safe The lowest places always flood first as water flows downhill due to gravity Our first week of school is now complete Can you guesshow many visitors we’ve had at our science website during the first week Give up We have had 91 visitors Many of the 91 visitors have visited more than once We have had a total of 171 visits Have you been to science class yet Science the word comes from Greekscire It means to know In science we ask questions do some investigations and then we see where the evidence takes us Do scientists dream imagine and play Yes All people do these things Yet it is the scientist’s job to know On this week in 1877 astronomer Asaph Hall discovered Phobos a moon of Mars Did you know that Mars has two moons Their names are Phobos and Deimos Welcome back everyone It’s nice to see everyone and we’re going to jump right in with our science studiesScience can help us understand the world we live in It’s fun exciting and it also can be difficult at times No worriesEach student will receive a 3-ring binder Keep it Hold on to it 1st grade only will leave their notebooks in the science lab 2nd 3rd amp 4th graders will take their lab notebooks with them they will need these notebooks to help with homework All our lab sheets will be placed in our 3-ring notebooks As we go through our lab experiences in class the lab sheets I’ll give to you will help explain what we’re doing We’ll also keep any numbers data observations diagrams and other important information in the lab notebookSee me if you ever have any problems or questions I am here early and I usually stay late I’m here to help youReadyset All systems GO! In science nothing is too wonderful to be true — Michael Faraday Meet the Teacher! Friday9:30 – 11 It was great to see everyone amp hear about summer adventuresSee you Monday for the 1st day of schoolBring yourthinking cap! Solstice had a tooth removed Tuesday The veterinarian took an x-ray and found that the tooth was causing a problem for her It was her 4th upper molar She is doing fine! If clouds aren’t in the sky tonight then you may see the moon Its phase is almost first quarter The moon in August is sometimes called the green corn moon or the grain moon Lower school teachers have been back in their rooms preparing for the yearThe dog-crew and I have been doing likewise We have enjoyed our visitors Each visitor has been greeted with some loud barking and commotion The dogs always hear visitors coming before I do Warm weather!Once again our temperatures are forecast to rise into the upper 90s todayEven our nights are warm The last time the temperature was 70 degrees was June 10th It has been a hot Memphis summerAugust is here! Flower: gladiolusBirthstone: peridotOn August nights the Big Dipper hangs high in the sky At dawn the star Sirius rises in the east along with our sun Sol Ancients believed that Sirius Orion’s hunting dog added its heat to the sun They called it the dog days of summer So do we! Doggies in the LabSpeaking of dogs we were all in the lab last week preparing for an exciting school year! Digital MusicDo you like music Perhaps most of the music we listen to is recorded Live music is great but recorded music is often more convenient for usIn years past music was recorded on magnetic tape It was called analogBut now music is recorded digitally What does that meanWhen the player plays the instrument the sound energy is transformed into 0 or 1 Lots of zeroes and ones! If you have enough zeroes and ones then you may create an electrical model of the sound But it takes millions of zeroes and ones to do it Almost all music these days is recorded this way with digits Our computers change the digits back into music for us to enjoy The weather Everybody talks about it! Weather scientists tell us that we re entering a rainy period — the next few days may bring some rain to the Memphis area It will cool us down WhyWhen water evaporates turns to gas it is an endothermic reaction That is heat is locked up in the water moleculeThe water molecule as it turns to a liquid becomes cooler than the surrounding air Remember heat energy is locked upWhen that cooled liquid returns to earth in the form of rain it falls through the air cooling the air around itSome people groan and say Oh no when it rainsBut rain brings water to our trees plants and to us The very water we drink today comes from underground This underground water collected in an aquifer is ancient rain water!Rain Bring it on! How many seconds are there in one day86400 seconds!60 seconds x 60 minutes x 24 hours 86400 secondsThat’s a lot of secondsmany chances to help mom! The Dog Days of Summer are here When people say this they mean It’s hot!But what does this expression mean exactly We know that the brightest star in the sky other than the sun is Sirius Sirius is the alpha star in constellation Canis Major the big dog Sirius is a winter star It is found just below Orion the Hunter Sirius is Orion’s faithful hunting dog and follows him across the sky But if you get up very early these days — before sunrise — then you’ll see a star rising in the eastern sky It is of course Sirius the dog starSirius rises just before the sun just before dawn Since both the sun and Sirius are rising more or less at the same time these mornings the ancient Greeks believed that Sirius added its heat to that of the sun To the Greeks this was the reason it was so hot this time of year! It’s not truly the reason but who’s to blame them The expression has stayed with us Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer! Woof woof! Once the sun rises Sirius cannot be seen due to the sun’s glare How do you cross the water in a carYou take a ferry of course! The Mobile Bay Ferry can take 18 cars at a time It crosses Alabama’s Mobile Bay from Fort Morgan to Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island It’s a fun and inexpensive way to take a summer cruise! On July 20th 1969 astronauts from the USA first landed on the Moon That’s 47 years ago! That was exactly 66 years after Orville amp Wilbur Wright built amp flew the 1st successful airplaneUp up amp away!In honor of that first flight Neil Armstrong amp Buzz Aldrin carried a small stamp-sized piece of that airplane the Wright Flyer with them to the MoonIt was a piece of cloth from the wing As Michael Collins orbited the Moon the lunar lander Eagle touched down on the Sea of Tranquility The Eagle carried the Flyer Enjoy summer! We’re off to the beach this week Crashing waves scuttling sandpipers laughing gulls flying kites sunny red noses amp wonderful experiences one can only have at the beach! Oxygen amp OzoneDuring these hot days if you hear about an ozone warning then that’s an indication that oxygen has turned to ozoneWhat is ozone It is 3 oxygen atoms connected together Oxygen on the other hand generally travels in pairs Oxygen 2 atoms Ozone 3 atoms Ozone is good for us if it remains high in the atmosphere It helps shield us from harmful ultraviolet radiationBut ozone close to the ground is considered a pollutant Once wind and weather move into the area then the ozone will be cleaned awayBut if the weather is hot and still then we may expect ozone warnings In ancient Greece the Etesian wind blew during July a hot caress that led Greeks down to the seashore It might be hard to imagine Plato or Socrates lolling on the beach like any sun worshipper at Malibu or the Riviera but they didThey dozed on the white sand and swam in the Aegean’s cobalt water After the fall of dark they lit bonfires on the sand roasted lamb on spits and wove wonderful tales beneath the summer stars In spite of the ages that separate us the Greeks probably thought of this time of year in the same way that we do: as a hope that summer might last forever waiting at the edge of the sea where children laugh gulls chatter and sandpipers scuttle in the hot sun – from The Dance of Time by Michael Judge France is the United States’ oldest ally What is an ally It is friend We have learned that in Nice France a bad guy drove a truck into a crowd of people who were celebrating France’s 4th of July known as Bastille Day Many innocent people were killed We pray for the people of Nice pronounced NeeseLong ago in 1908 an American went to France to show the French people his new invention That American was Wilbur Wright Just north of Nice in Le Mans on August 11 1908 Will flew the airplane he and brother Orville invented It was the first public flight of a flying machine that truly worked well and could be controlled! Will took off flew some circles and landed to the enthusiastic cheering of the French peopleHe made 9 flights that week totaling about 1/2 hour in the air The French people supported Will when nobody else seemed to carePray for France A Rainy DayWeather forecasters saw the rain coming our way on Thursday The rain came from the westWeather satellites orbit 24000 miles above the earth in geosynchronous orbits These satellites orbit at a speed that matches Earth’s rotation So these satellites are always above the same geographic place on Earth Data and pictures gathered by such satellites help us to see weather before it arrives Lausanne builds! On Tuesday July 12th I spent some time in our Upper Middle School building helping with our LLI summer programAs I looked out the 2nd floor window towards Blue Heron Lake I was filled with memoriesYears ago I taught at that location But the building was different — it was called Thompson Hall and it had been used as a dormitory previouslyMy 8th grade classroom was on the 2nd floor We had a balcony which enabled us to perform many interesting experimentsusing the law of gravity! It was great fun!Once we did a light and sound experiment Some of the 8th graders hiked down to Blue Heron Lake From there they whacked a drumstick on a block From the balcony the rest of us spotted them in a telescope We would see the whack but the sound was heard about one second laterlike an old movie out of synchWhat was happening Light travels at 186000 miles per secondSound travels through the air but not nearly as fast — around 780 miles per hourSo the light reached our eyes before the sound reached our ears! Next time you see an airplane fly overhead watch it carefully You’ll notice the sound of the engines and the air resistancebut the sound will appear to come from behind the planeIt’s a fun experiment and it works every timeThe new building is certainly beautiful But the old one was great too! The Electronic PlaygroundHave you seen The Electronic Playground in the labIt is a circuit board that teaches about the pathways circuits that electrons move along as we harness them to do work for us Along their way the electrons encounter switches resistors capacitors and semiconductors 4th grade learns about the Electronic Playground and on Tuesday 7/12 I introduced it to a group of teachers from other schools at the Lausanne Learning Institute LLI Each teacher received an EP to take back to their classrooms as well as a battery a set of alligator clip wires and a book of circuits for experimenting Early Saturday morning I saw an animal that is seldom seen It was a fox! He was crossing Shady Grove Road near Wolf River I got a good look at him He was red and brown was walking very quickly and stood about 15 – 18 inches at the shoulder He paused and looked right at me and then disappeared into the woodsJust a few minutes later a large bird glided right over me and came to roost on a streetlight It was a sparrow hawk It was brown white and tan Its wings when extended in flight looked to have a span of about 3 feet It was a special morning to see special animals! Do you wake up early in the morning We do at our house!Morning is generally the coolest time of the day WhyEarth turns — it rotates — and the sun has been on the other side of the Earth throughout the night But at sunrise the radiant energy of the sun causes the air to begin to move about and the temperature of the air rises We remember that moving energy is called kinetic energyAs the sun appears to climb into the sky its rays strike Earth ever more directly heating the land as well Air right above the land is heated Yet land does not soak up or store up a great deal of heat energy When the sun is gone the land coolsIf you have ever been on the sandy seashore at the moment of sunset you have experienced thisThe warm sand of the day almost instantly turns cold when the sun sets If you are walking barefoot along the shore you can feel it!Contrast this with the water Its temperature pretty much remains the same both day and night Why Water is unique it is special Water can store up heat energy very well Scientists tell us that water has a very high specific heat capacity Water is slow to store up heat energy but equally slow in giving it back This property of water plus all the oceans of the Earth help distribute heat energy around Earth Heat gets spread out Water helps moderate our weatherNo other liquid has such a high specific heat capacity as water! Weather scientists tell us that today’s temperature will be 95 degrees and the heat index will be 108 degreesWhat is the heat index Consider how you feel when you get out of the pool and the wind blows Do you feel cool Yes That’s because as the water evaporates from your skin each droplet takes away some heat as it turns to gas You feel cool!So the heat index is a measure of the ability of water to evaporate from your skin which allows you to coolIf there is a great deal of humidity moisture in the air such as is the case today then moisture leaves your skin more slowly Evaporation is slower And you do not feel as cool That’s the heat index It’s very high todaySo be careful outside Seek the shade Drink lots of water Make sure your pets have a cool place too with plenty of water Juno Arrives at Jupiter! The robotic spacecraft Juno arrived at Jupiter on the 4th of July Juno is now orbiting JupiterJuno was falling so fast into Jupiter rockets had to be fired to slow her down!It took 5 years to travel there because space distances are so huge Juno’s 20-month mission: to study Jupiter its magnetic field its auroras and its atmosphere Jupiter is a dangerous place to visit even for a robot It has a very strong magnetic field which isn’t good for electronic instrumentsJupiter also has a great deal of radiation Being in orbit around Jupiter is like receiving millions of x-rays! NASA engineers had to devise a shield in order to protect Juno So far it’s working very wellGalileo in 1619 was the first to notice that Jupiter has moons! He saw 4 of them through his telescope Their names are Europa Callisto Ganymeade and Io Europa is covered with ice and the ice is cracked and moving This suggests that water is covering Europa! That’s very exciting and one day perhaps we will send a spacecraft there to explore the Europan Seas! Might there be any living creatures there It’s an open questionIo is a tiny moon and in 1980 the spacecraft Voyager snapped a special picture Io was found to have an erupting volcano! You can learn more about Jupiter by going to wwwsciencenasagovThen click on planets Independence Day USA!On July 4 1776 our Founding Fathers met and solemnly pledged their lives fortunes and sacred honor to a new nation Here was the world’s first nation in which its citizens could be free to worship free to come and go and free to pursue dreams of life liberty and happinessOur founders! Without them we would not be here There would not even be a Lausanne We owe them a great debt Were they perfect individuals No They knew very well that many problems needed to be solved We look in the mirror and notice that we too aren’t perfectBut the United States has laws that protect her people Such laws come from a Higher Power Before any man can be considered as a member of civil society he must be considered as a subject of the Governor of the Universe – James Madison Let us strive to learn all we can help others all we can do all we can to make our country all it can be By the way if you watch TV tonight at 7 pm you will see A Capitol Fourth on WKNO Channel 10 One of the singers performing is Jackie Evanchoone of my all-time favorites! She will be singing God Bless America Welcome July!flower: larkspurbirthstone: rubyTonight’s moon phase will be waning crescent If you see the moon at all then it will be a very thin slice lit on its left side by the sun Tomorrow night the moon will still be there of course But we won’t see it The sun will be behind the moon and no reflected light will be seen from Earth It will be known as a new moon We are approaching the heart of summer Speaking of hearts if you look south on a dark clear night you may see Constellation Scorpio Scorpio looks like a big scorpion with two clawsTowards the middle of Scorpio is a very reddish star It’s about halfway up from the horizon It is Antares the heart of the scorpion Antares is the alpha star in Scorpio Do you remember when we talked about Constellation Draco the Dragon It is a long twisting constellation of stars twisting around the North Star PolarisDraco is so long that it may only be seen in its entirety this time of year Look north on a dark night If you see the North Star Polaris then Draco is there! Scotty Moore: An Influential Guitar PlayerWhen Elvis Presley began his recording career here in Memphis at Sun Studios in the 1950s he had many great hits such as Hound Dog Blue Suede Shoes and Heartbreak Hotel His guitar player was Scotty Moore Scotty played his electric guitar in a country rock and roll sort of way with a touch of jazz One of my favorite guitar solos of all time is Scotty’s wonderful solo in Hound Dog It just rocks!!!Scotty died this week in Nashville He helped Elvis develop his exciting soulful style He was 84 years oldMany great musicians such as Paul McCartney The Beatles and Keith Richards The Rolling Stones liked being with Scotty Moore because of his great guitar-playing and his humble personalityRest in peace and thank you Mr Moore! You helped inspire many of us to play guitar But none of us will ever play quite like you did! The month of June June flower: roseJune birthstone: pearlOn Tuesday our family welcomed a new baby! If the sky is clear tonight then you may find the Moon What will it look like Willit be full No Although one side of the Moon faces the Sun the Moon has phases Depending upon the Moon’s position as it orbits the Earth the Sun lights it up What we see is a portion of that reflected light Tonight from Earth the Moon’s phase is waning crescent That is the lighted part of the Moon from our point of view is a crescent and is getting smaller the next few nights Try to find it! Did it rain at your house early this morningIf so look outside There may be many birds on the ground They are looking for food Birds know that after a rain earthworms crawl up out of their burrows As the worms come up birds get a meal! It’s hot! It’s summertime and today will again be warm The rain will cool the air somewhatWith temperatures forecast to rise into the mid – 90s the sun warms the air The amount of moisture in our Memphis area air known as humidity is high alsoMost of our humidity comes from the Gulf of Mexico Water evaporates rises high into the air and is blow to the mid-south by the prevailing windsWeather scientists meteorologists may use a heat index that tells us how hot it truly feelsWith more humidity in the air evaporation happens slowly We know that evaporation is a way that our skin cools itself As water evaporates liquid water turns to vapor it takes away heat as it does soThe heat index today may reach 110 So be careful outside Provide yourself and your pets with plenty of shade and water Have you seen the beautiful puffy clouds Maybe you have seen large birds circling just under them If so you can be sure that these birds are catching a column of rising warm air called a thermal Some birds are experts at this especially Turkey Vultures Their wings spread wide to catch the rising air It is beautiful to observe We often see them in the skies over Memphis! The Summer SolsticeYesterday summer officially began Yesterday is also known as the Summer Solstice The daylight hours were longest and the night-time hours were shortestFor a period of time our daylight hours will be long our night hours will be short All of it adds up to 24 hours!WhyWe must think about our Earth as it orbits the Sun Earth is tilted at about 23 degrees in relation to that orbitOn the Summer Solstice the North Pole of the Earth is tilted directly toward the Sun in its space trek This means that more of the Sun’s rays strike the Northern Hemisphere of Earth than reach the Southern Hemisphere It’s the first day of winter down there! It’s like facing the Sun on the beach It’s warmer on that side!Incidentally Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle it is in astronomers’ language an ellipse An ellipse is not exactly a circleit is a circle with two centers An ellipse is a sort of squashed-out circle Our ellipse has a very slight eccentricity Believe it or not Earth is about 3 million miles farther from the Sun today than it is in winter It’s the tilt that makes such a difference in our climateWere it not for the tilt of the Earth’s axis we would have no seasons at all! Astronomers also tell us that the Sun appears to rise in its northernmost point in the east on the Summer Solstice and it will set in its northernmost point in the west The sun remains in the sky for almost 18 hours these days! Are you confused yet It’s easier to see on a diagram I can show you when school begins again! One more thing about todayhave you ever heard of the Tropic of Cancer It is so named because a constellation of stars — known as Cancer — is the place in the sky where the Sun happens to be today at noon The stars are much farther away than our Sun Our Sun appears to be in Cancer Cancer is generally drawn as a crab Sohappy Summer Solstice Don’t be crabby! : The month of June!June is one of our favoritesthe June flower is a rose The June birthstone is a pearl Do the thing and you will have the power-Ralph Waldo EmersonA mild answer turns back wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger Proverbs 15:1 The phase of the moon is waxing gibbous Courage Amid ChaosLove is stronger than hateWe learned about the sad events in Orlando Florida A crazed gunman killed 50 innocent people and injured dozens moreWhen we see bad guys do bad things like this we are sad Yet even in such a tragic situation we see many people rushing in to help The police helped Workers at the business helped Friends helped each other May we always be helpers to one another each day May we always be willing to sacrifice for othersWe ask God’s blessings on a troubled world There will soon be a new element on the Periodic Table Guess what its name will be It will be known asTennesseeum Tn! Yes it’s true This new element was discovered through research in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory right here in Tennessee Tennesseeum was made in the laboratory by smashing other elements together Tennesseem has an atomic number of 117 This means that one atom of Tennesseem has 117 protons particles in its nucleus It is the heaviest element so far D-Day Anniversary was June 6th72 years ago on June 6 1944 the Allied Forces landed on the beaches of France Their mission: to liberate Europe from Nazi control Their mission took many months and many lives It was successful and brought about the end of World War II Muhammad Ali was a great boxer amp won the World Heavyweight Championship 3 timesHe was also known for his quick wit his sense of humor his love for people and his poetry But once a flight attendant got the best of him As Ali took his seat and the crew was readying the airplane for take-off a flight attendant noticed that Ali wasn’t wearing his seat beltPlease fasten your seat belt sir she reminded himAli looked at her and answered Superman don’t need no seat belt She looked at him and said Superman don’t need no airplane! A Baseball StoryWhen I was 10 years old we used to play baseball in the church yard across the street from my houseOne day when school was out I was up to bat I got lucky and hit the ball far The ball sailed across the churchyard across the street and smashed right into the front window of a nearby houseWe heard the crash of glass and stopped the game I knew I had to go over there so I did I rang the doorbell very afraid of what might happenThe house was the home of a Memphis fireman Mr Lovell and his wife Mrs Lovell answered the door I braced myself for a severe reprimandShe spoke to me kindly and called Mr Lovell to the door I’m sorry sir I broke your window I will be glad to pay for a new one He had the baseball in his hand He gave me back the ball He said John I’m glad you came over I will take care of the window it was an accident I was very relieved and glad that I knocked on their door that day Both Mr amp Mrs Lovell reminded me that it was always best to own up to what you do It was very unusual for me to hit the ball that far!I will always remember the Lovell family and their kindness June is here! 30 days have SeptemberApril June and NovemberI hope you spend lots of time outside this summer Look up at the stars tonight if it’s clear Did you know that the stars are out in the daytime too We just can’t see them because the sun is so brightAstronomers call it the sun’s glare Planet Jupiter is out tonight This evening when it gets dark look up and south Look slightly east left The brightest object in the sky is Jupiter Memorial Day marked the unofficial start of summer Official summer begins on June 20th It is known as the Summer Solstice On that day daylight in the Northern Hemisphere will be the longest of any day in the year — and nights will be shortestMemorial Day originally known as Decoration Day may be traced to 1862 when families of those who died in the Civil War visited the graves of loved ones bringing flowersNow it is a National Holiday It is a day when we pause remember and thank those who died in service of us all so that we may live freeThere is a saying Freedom isn’t free That is somebody had to fight for it Why One of our Lausanne parents a doctor who escaped from Vietnam as a 14 year-old put it this way: There are always bad guys out there who want to tell you what to do and take everything that belongs to youThat’s true It is also true that freedom has been bought and paid for Let us pause and be thankful to all those who have been willing to protect and defend us here in the USA We are free That’s why so many people want to come here Lausanne all of her families from around the world and our own day-to-day choices are a result of those who fought for freedom Congratulations to the Lausanne Class of 2016 who had their Baccalaureate today Graduation is tomorrowBye everybody! Happy and safe summer to allI will be in amp out of the lab all of June cleaning up amp getting ready for next yearI’ll also be helping out at Renaissance Summer camp on Tuesday amp Thursday afternoons during the month of June Lab notebooks were due last week in grades 3 amp 4 All pages should have been in chronological order amp all blanks should have been filledWe have 0 days of school left Did you do your best I hope so! Learning is life-long I am still learning! I think it keeps a person youngif we keep learning To be learning is to be active dynamic and interested in the world around youKids do it naturally That is why I love being a teacher We learn We grow We love and serve othersRight Summer provides rest relaxationand learning! Who says you can’t learn at the beach in the mountains in the car or in the backyard Certainly we can! There is much to experience out-of-doors So go out amp look for a butterfly a bird a salamander at my house we have little ones called skinks Or look up in the sky Find the Big Dipper in the Northern skies Follow its handle backwards and the first very bright star you see isArcturus! You can’t miss it Arc to Arcturus from the Big Dipper |
