Michael Benner Raechel Donahue Caitlyn Jenner Larry Huffman and Jimmy O’Neil Nostalgia Sunday – 17 years Ago Today Radio Didn’t Kill Anything October 13 2002 Last week LARadio subscribers received a fascinating and personal piece Radio Killed the Radio Star written by Todd Spencer which appeared at Saloncom Todd the former manager editor of Gavin magazine lost his job he claims because of consolidation and Clear Channel’s refusal to send executives to the Gavin convention as well as purchasing rival trade publications He attended the recent NAB confab in Seattle to take a census of the mood of the radio community He said that one Top 40 programmer accepted a Gavin Award plaque at the banquet podium with a dinner napkin over his face Todd charged that consolidation has resulted in 10000 layoffs Al Brady Law has had an impressive career in programming and management including general manager positions at New York and Houston stations as well as an executive slot at KMPC In the 1990s he was operations manager at KABC/KMPC Six years ago Al voluntarily left the radio industry to pursue some high tech opportunities that didn’t work out He had to re-enter the radio business after having been away from it for half a decade And what a half decade During this time consolidation exploded It was in some ways for Al like coming into a new business He provides a unique perspective to Todd Spencer’s article and the world of radio today Radio Didn’t Kill Anything by Al Brady Law I can’t take it anymore All this crying and whining and moaning about the deregulation of radio First I’m truly sorry that Mr Spencer lost his job I’ve been there and it’s no fun I think I have a good idea of how he feels but it is not the fault of deregulation or Infinity or Clear Channel or Cumulus or ABC or Emmis or anyone else that he lost his job It’s simply the free market system working the way it is supposed to work Nobody claims that every single thing about Deregulation is good It’s not but then not every single thing about any industry is good and it is certain that not everything about the good old days of radio were good either Mr Spencer hit the problem squarely without even realizing it He mentions almost in passing that radio listening is down over the past few years Well yeah With all the media choices now available it is inevitable that time spent with any one form of media has and will continue to diminish in the coming years Without consolidation the industry that we all love so much would soon become a shadow of itself Without the critical mass that companies are now allowed to reach radio would be reduced to a business with such small profit margins that no one would be able to produce any compelling programming And of course without profit there can be no community service Who or what do you think pays for all that community service It has never been true that locally produced radio equals quality programming I remember years ago driving cross-country listening to all the small radio stations and thinking about how dreadful they were Are the people in Podunk better served by listening to someone who can barely speak or by hearing Rush Limbaugh or Don Imus or any of the other supremely talented personalities to whom they now have access One can complain about the sameness of all the small town stations but there is no sameness to the people who live in those communities They don’t know that a station a hundred miles away also runs Sean Hannity Why would they care All they care about is their own listening experience And because of consolidation they now have access to programming that just a few years ago was not available to them Also the very best of those small stations always have and still make sure that they are serving a local need Maybe we should have put a stop to this insidious duplication years ago by stopping Paul Harvey from being on so many radio stations and what about all those terrible tv stations that run the same network programming Are they too destroying the fabric of American Media I don’t think so I’ve heard all the arguments about lack of diversity because of deregulation That is patently absurd If diversity means running radio stations that appeal to very small segments of the population then the desire to achieve that kind of diversity is misplaced There’s nothing about consolidation that keeps those kinds of stations from existing They never have and never will compete with the mass-market stations for revenue If there are fewer of them today than in the past it is more likely to be a function of their lack of competitiveness in general rather than as a direct result of any consolidation Another point concerning diversity: in Mr Spencer’s hometown of San Francisco Infinity has recently installed a brand new never before done format on one of its stations Talk about experimentation Talk about being willing to invest in an unproven format My guess is that there are many other such experiments going on in both large and small markets Sure it’s tough when people lose their jobs God I hate that but I must tell you that I have noticed no shortage of talent or good programming The complaints about short playlists and homogenized playlists I remember Bill Drake being vilified in the 60s and 70s for having all those radio stations that sound alike and by the way they’re destroying personality radio All Drake did was save Top 40 radio from becoming totally irrelevant and in the process killed personality by bringing us Robert W Morgan The Real Don Steele Charlie Tuna Dr Don Rose Dale Dorman and all the other great personalities of that era as well as developing some of the greatest program directors of all time As for Mr Spencer’s contention that the Gavin trade magazine was well loved that may be but I guarantee it provided nothing that is not provided by several other trade magazines The industry has lost nothing with the passing of one trade magazine This does not speak to the unfortunate loss of jobs but nobody is entitled to a job and if any person or entity is truly providing some service that is unique and needed they and it will be around as long as they are providing that uniqueness and filling that need Do we know everything we need to know about running radio stations in this new environment Certainly not But we’re learning every day and it is no sin to try to maximize profits Fewer jobs today than yesterday Look at any industry It’s true Homogenized programming without a local feel Not in my market Denver is so heavily populated with radio stations and various media companies that you can get almost anything you want at any given time and by the way we have a new company with a new format that just recently hit the airwaves Diversity is alive and well here Change is tough Especially when it hits you personally But one thing is certain change is constant and we each have a choice of getting in the way of change or trying to manage that change in a responsible manner There are a lot of big names that have lost their jobs for one reason or another and then made the choice to come back strong rather than sit and whine about the changing factors that caused them to lose their jobs Just to name a few: Howard Stern Don Imus Tom Leykis and Rick Dees There are also a great number of smaller names that are making their way through consolidation without a lot of fanfare They are simply trying to figure out how to make this new world work and they are trying their best to do a good job every day The ones that bring something to the table will be around for a long time I’m sorry Mr Spencer lost his job but he needs to stop wishing for what was and start working on making his way in what is and what is about to be I Fought the Law Al Brady Law wrote a very thoughtful think piece earlier this week “Radio Didn’t Kill Anything” that prompted some very passionate email Instead of waiting until Email Saturday the following represents some of the email: “I was appalled to read Al Brady Law’s apology for Clear Channel Communications in Tuesday’s column” emailed Louis Iaceo from West Covina “ I fondly remember this man as a deejay at the old WOR/fm in New York and not so fondly as the pd of the once great WABC in its declining years In the Thanksgiving night massacre of 1979 he fired three major personalities two of whom were among the greatest of New York radio greats Harry Harrison and Chuck Leonard and one of whom is now known for his Sports Machine on Sunday night TV George Michael As any amateur could have told you at the time this only furthered the decline of the greatest Top 40 radio station of all time It kind of reminds me of the Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio baseball trade for the stupidity of exchanging these radio greats for three others “Mr Law seems to not catch the purpose of the airwaves as per legislation creating and maintaining the FCC that is to serve the public interest as opposed to making money for the robber-baron owners and the greedy stockholders Under the old 7-7 OampO rule radio stations made money and those that were well programmed and well managed made lots of money However the purpose of radio and tv must remain the service of the public interest not the service of the owners and stockholders Iaceo continued: “Mr Law has the audacity to compare the current radio fiasco with pioneers and legends like Paul Harvey and Bill Drake Keep in mind that RKO General did not own Bill Drake his services were also used by other stations such as CKLW in Windsor/Detroit and KYNO in Fresno and were not used by RKO stations WGMS in Washington DC and WOR/AM in New York Paul Harvey’s interesting program was heard on many radio stations long before the current monopolists dreamed about consolidation To imply that Paul Harvey flourishes because of these robber barons is an absolute affront to one’s intelligence Who can forget the fine newscasts on KMPC – it was not even a news/talk station “Perhaps Mr Law can explain how a commercial load that often exceeds 20 minutes per hour serves the public interest His letter to your column indicates that his market clusters serve the needs of advertisers but I see nothing in the FCC goals about radio companies serving the interests of advertisers Let’s give radio back to the public interest and take it away from the decadent capitalists” concluded Louis Iacueo “Arrow’s” Scott St James spent a brief period time with Al Brady Law “Very brief A cynic’s reaction might be that this is Al’s way to try to get another job but that would require mind reading ability” emailed Scott “The thing that jumped out at me was the point about small market radio ‘sucking’ I couldn’t help but think that yeah but it’s SO local and the folks livin’ there for the most part are SO into it and probably have met and or had dinner or drinks with the guy or gal on the air And that’s also where dreams are realized A guy like Al Brady Law driving through and suddenly deciding to STOP! ‘Cause he wants to hear more of someone he thinks HE might want to HIRE!” offered St James Craig Hines former director of programming and operations at Transtar and afternoon jock at KBIG responded to Al Brady Law’s comment: Mr Spencer hit the problem squarely without even realizing it He mentions almost in passing that radio listening is down over the past few years Well yeah With all the media choices now available it is inevitable that time spent with any one form of media has and will continue to diminish in the coming years “Oh horse shit Al! Why are we listening less” asked Craig “Because the product quality has diminished! Sure there may be more things to listen to but face facts please It just isn’t as fun unique personable and professional as radio once was And Al I didn’t lose my job because of deregulation or Infinity or Clear Channel so don’t tell me I’m crying sour grapes Luckily I found something else to do but my heart aches for people still in radio and more so for those who want to be in it A career in radio dot-com or telecom is NOT the most promising of futures at least not today “Video may have helped kill the radio star but so did the Harvard MBA’s corporate bean counters and researchers who kept hacking away at the business always striving to get more more more for less and less Along the way they lost the old Gordon McLendon concept of programming quality first money flowing second It was a Costner-esque thing back then: If you build it well the bucks will come Sadly it has morphed to be more of making the bottom line decisions first with programming issues to be resolved later Somehow folks the pyramid got inverted Craig continued: “When managers and market presidents chop away at ‘needless expenses’ like people promotion good engineering decent equipment and quality research just to get their margins right for the corporate office the business is just plain screwed Where’s the quality in that What happened to generating more revenue instead of playing silly percentages games “If I want my business to deliver more money to the bottom line I don’t just cut costs I find new revenue opportunities new products target marketing to my current customers and any number of positive moves But I’m not in radio anymore I run a legitimate business that operates on sound principles and a fair amount of ‘gut feeling’ that is based on years of experience and knowing my market Pretty twisted huh “As long as people are willing to settle for this mundane watered down boring and heartless incarnation of radio it will not get better” continued Craig “As long as they accept that the market is too huge and there are too many competitors dividing up the pie then there will be no shining stars just more Roy-speak Pat-speak Al-speak and the incessant spinning of the alleged facts If you aim for the front lawn instead of the stars you might be lucky and land on the lawn Personally I’d like to see a few more people join in aiming higher and perhaps reaching a few stars Why settle Bill Clinton spoke at last years RampR convention and admitted that he was strong-armed into the deregulation by the rabid right-wingers in the Congress and that what has taken place is NOT what he and most fair minded people wanted Like the energy deregulation in California we got screwed So have the rank-and-file employees of the conglomerates ie Enron WorldCom Lucent Clear Channel and so on” concluded Craig We GET Email … Corporate Profit: New Radio Mantra “Congratulations to Al Brady Law on being employed and being able to support a terrific guy like Mel Karmazin whose annual multimillion dollar mega-bonuses and raises are earned by denying salary increases and operational funds to his best brightest and most creative local warriors Al’s right Let’s stop lamenting the old days when human creative talent and real quality effort was widely appreciated marketable and indispensable And let’s start facing the facts Corporate profit has become the new way truth and light It’s silly for us to develop anxiety over this After all we’re embracing this new profit concept as a nation and teaching it to our young So it’s certainly time for us to get the picture ourselves and stop complaining Newspaper radio and tv are the natural public media for this new culture and they’ve just got to be streamlined and controlled by a more efficient and unified corporate system It’s the new world so let’s deal with it! I think that’s what Al’s trying to share with us Oh sure the individual expression of each and every free human spirit is what used to make this country great But let’s stop lamenting that loss too This is a new country in a new world so let’s look forward to the continued and increasing dominance of the benevolent few the wealthy the chosen ones who will help us to develop our beliefs and moral codes provide us with an income and help us to feel needed Let’s all look forward to a better world where the awful burden of self-determination is removed from our shoulders I know what you’re thinking but you’re wrong That’s not communism No it’s not You’ve forgotten that we’re living in a representative democracy Fortunately for us our new corporate world is providing leadership that’s willing to show us what we need and show our representatives how to make sure we get it Sounds great right Besides individuality and creativity were overrated anyway Creativity isn’t necessary any more Profit is Good luck Al Thanks for providing your insight You’ll go a long way at Infinity That is until streamlining and consolidation assure that you’re out of work again God I’d hate that” – Stephen H Blodgett W7RNA Specialized Technical Services Los Angeles Location Reunion “The recent comments of Al Brady Law notwithstanding I wonder how many of today’s radio station employees would be willing 25 years from now to travel across country for a Star Kiss or Power insert number here Reunion!” – Jack Hayes talk consultant Lyons Take on Law “I couldn’t help but enjoy the discourse prompted by the Al Brady Law commentary Certainly I honor and respect Al’s long-running career and stature in the industry – he’s certainly earned it Funny enough he’s one of the few more prominent names in local and/or regional radio with whom I HAVEN’T worked in my own career But I’m afraid I’m not on the same side in the Clear Channel controversy When I was in local radio I remember such overriding elements as The Fairness Doctrine and equal time provisions that forced the radio business to be more responsible to the public interest Our licenses we were CONSTANTLY reminded were held by us solely in the public interest It was a public trust and we were seriously and constantly beholden to that Indeed while working for then-viable RKO those rules and regs literally meant job security for me License challenges were an ongoing issue and were always taken seriously We had the dreaded ascertainment procedures to follow as news and public affairs people We had forms to fill out yawn! bureaucracy! and local officials of all derivatives we were required to seek out and query about their opinions and observations concerning the communities we mutually served Then we were expected to develop programming to address those concerns The corporate types were scared to death to cut back on some wonderfully viable news and public affairs departments that were out in the community on a daily basis enhancing our station’s profile actually covering local news and adding some damn fine broadcast elements to the overall on-air presentation Our newscasts and public affairs presentations at KHJ and KRTH-101 routinely won armloads of awards that brought us further prestige enticement for commercial sponsorship great publicity and promotional opportunities and great response and participation from our listeners We were a force for good and for positive change in our community Sure selfishly it meant my job was safe Long after regulation relaxation allowed other stations to trash their news and public affairs and just ‘shut up and play the hits’ RKO was loath to touch us seems some alleged corporate malfeasance way higher up within a distant parent corporation meant the ‘suits’ within our immediate reach didn’t dare rock the boat So okay it meant my news buddies and I had jobs while others of our friends were laid off But it also meant we had another way to touch affect and be active participants in the lives of our listeners and our communities We made stuff happen I’ve participated in everything from initiating a prisoner exchange treaty between the United States and Mexico to making sure a local children’s shelter whose Christmas presents were stolen got loads of donated gifts from anonymous Santas all over town You CAN’T really be a part of your community if you’re just cloning some syndicated programming from across the country where they’re only thoughtful enough to remember to provide pre-recorded drop-in station IDs for you You CAN’T serve your community from which your license grant supposedly originates without a local touch Who cares if local radio sometimes sounds a little amateur-ish That’s part of the beauty of it And frankly that’s where a HUGE number of Al Brady Laws’ and even Mary Lyons’ got their start With that door now virtually locked we lose an incalculably valuable resource for now and for the future The young aspiring radio folks out there have much more discouragement facing them than I ever did and that’s a real shame Further I personally find myself wondering if for example a Sean Hannity broadcasting from 3000 miles away could ever possibly hope to serve my community – especially in a city that voted democrat in a county that votes democrat in a state that also votes democrat The homogenized offerings that are the same to everyone just wind up blanding everything out for everyone How is it special and unique to my community to know that the folks on my radio stations are just the same old canned distant voices from somewhere else who aren’t REALLY talking to me Radio is and has always been an intimate one-on-one medium A broad corporate umbrella that serves only one dish to all us millions in different towns and cities in different states and regions and zip codes and political persuasions and climates and identities can’t possibly feed us well Besides I’d venture a guess that Al would treasure the products of a very local boutique brewery over a standardized national brand ANY day off that he cares to kick back and savor! Instead of worrying almost exclusively about nauseatingly long spot clusters that ‘serve the advertisers’ interests’ – radio that MOST immediate and intimate of media should NEVER stray from the golden rule of serving the LISTENERS’ interests Even with all the deregulation out there radio station licenses ARE still held even if purportedly IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST” Al also talks about how listenership has declined because there are so many more outlets out there dividing up the pie I respectfully beg to differ The reason many of us listeners are gone is because we’ve been blown off and disenfranchised More listeners are a lot savvier about discerning which is a local program and which is nationally syndicated They can sense when a radio station is neither listening back directly to them nor serving their own local interests They see the lack of interaction and local participation They see the lack of commitment to the local audience when a corporate-owned ‘local’ broadcaster chooses once again the preference for saving money and making a buck over spending a little more hiring local talent to serve and speak to the interests of the local community When did Rush Limbaugh ever come out here to help open a neighborhood grocery store or broadcast at the beach on a great weekend or ride in the community parade Some of the stations switching to syndicated programming from a distant elsewhere have certainly lost me for example And that means those sacrosanct advertisers whose interests the stations put on the highest pedestals also lose me – because I’m gone and beyond their reach In protest I’m one of those annoying types who intend to make sure they’ve lost me permanently So how then is THAT serving EITHER the listener OR those cherished advertisers And lastly as long as the broadcasting behemoths continue in this vein eventually they’ll wind up hurting themselves Ongoing operations like those of Clear Channel eventually start attracting the wrong kind of attention – from complainers who start doing pesky things like writing to their congressperson and bringing – dare I say – the dreaded threat of regulation back upon themselves Remember: all those who decry unions – unions wouldn’t have been necessary if corporations hadn’t been so shamelessly irresponsible and brought it all down upon themselves Besides I remember when the late great KHJ had a 39 and thought that was terrible a lineup of local jocks and a big full-service news department and was still making money by the mega-ton They could afford it then and surely the big monoliths can afford it now We ALL would be so much better served” – Mary Lyons Radio Fan Reacts to Law “I’m not in radio just a listener Those who read no further because I’m ‘just a listener’ are saying quite a bit about the value you place on what really drives the radio business I have had several opportunities to fill out diaries participate in focus groups and answer phone research surveys I enjoy doing it and I reward those who entertain and don’t bore Al Brady Law is right There is nothing evil about profit or corporations Who cares if there is a ‘Mix’ or ‘Star’ format in every market It works People listen to it People just want to be entertained Who cares if it’s original Look at the best-selling music on the charts this week: Elvis 1 Rolling Stones 2 Face the hard truth This is what people find compelling and are willing to pay for Listeners don’t want to support a personality just because they are green and getting started Those who place a value on ‘small markets’ for the talent development aspect that is what Internet radio and college radio is for The stakes aren’t that high Go stink up the airwaves on your own dime if you love it so much Recapping a story from Entertainment Weekly or National Enquirer is not good show prep and it doesn’t constitute ‘personality’ It’s lazy What separates that host from the guy behind me in line at the supermarket checkout counter who makes the same obvious comment about the story I want to tune him out too Push buttons on the radio have far more to do with fickle audiences than any corporation influence Commercial load doesn’t bother me because I tune right out just like every other commuter Hint to advertisers: nobody sits through 22 minutes of commercials an hour In closing Don it’s also amazing how many respondents infused their comment with a political agenda of some sort as if capitalism or Bill Clinton or Bob Dole is keeping them from realizing their full creativity by playing another 10 in a row Yeesh” – John Crowley Redondo Beach RE: Radio Didn’t Kill Anything by Al Brady Law “‘ltI can’t take it anymore All this crying and whining and moaning about the deregulation of radio’gt Deal with it Mr Law The numbers are growing In the coming years what you hear right now will be a mere whisper And the industry brought it upon itself So don’t YOU go whining about something that is here to stay as long as there are fewer and fewer owners and players in this vacuum ltFirst I’m truly sorry that Mr Spencer lost his jobgt Oh stop it! Crocodile tear stains the carpet! I’ve been there and it’s no fun I think I have a good idea of how he feels but it is not the fault of deregulation or Infinity or Clear Channel or Cumulus or ABC or Emmis or anyone else that he lost his job It’s simply the free market system working the way it is supposed to work Good place to start Let’s talk about the so-called ‘free markets’ Free markets exist when there are multiple players Surprisingly the freest of all markets are the fairest markets where there are plain and simple rules in relationship to ownership limits per market This allows for many different companies to not only offer different choices but to insure that the properties already owned deliver the best possible product and/or value to the consumer There is another word for this: competition Today the radio industry treats the medium as a Monopoly game where quality isn’t as important as overall quantity Giving unchecked power to any industry is like giving whiskey and car keys to 14-year-old boys In order to finance their acquisitions the radio industry which has never been known for it’s altruistic benevolence systematically lays off numerous people people who have had dreams of a long-term career in the industry and replaces them with cheap voicetracking systems ltNobody claims that every single thing about Deregulation is good It’s not but then not every single thing about any industry is good and it is certain that not everything about the good old days of radio were good eithergt True but in ‘the good old days’ if you were laid off you could go somewhere else Today there are fewer and fewer jobs and as voicetracking spreads even fewer What we are ending up with is stations and playlists and talent with no local identity and that is where the term ‘McRadio’ comes in No local flavor or content Just formats based on questionable research models such as telemarketing ltRadio listening is down over the past few yearsgt Ironically the numbers have been sinking since 1996 and steadily since 1997 But instead of finding new and innovative ways to keep the audiences listening the industry simply gets it’s dander up and uses every resource in its sales department to rack up as many hourly spots as possible Long sets of commercials and repetitious selections of over ‘researched’ music are the chief causes of the decline not other technology But even if it were you’d have to wonder what attracts people to internet radio Or pirate radio college radio DMX XM/Sirius What are they doing that you are not that for all their limitations is taking away your audience nevertheless Of course any kind of a realization like that is an incredible blow to industry programming egos But one that has to be faced You can’t remain in denial forever ltWithout consolidation the industry that we all love so much would soon become a shadow of itself gt WITH consolidation the industry IS a shadow of itself The radio companies before Telecom ’96 and duopolies of the 1990’s had every bit as much reach to a mass audience as you claim it does now But with the added benefit of local programming innovation within each station Small profit margins Are you going to actually stand there and tell me several million dollars a year was not enough of a ‘profit margin’ Maybe somebody ought to get out of the hot tub and sell off the vacation home and come back down to earth like the rest of your low wage employees and face a few facts: First WHAT ‘compelling’ programming are we hearing now Mr Law Let’s spin the dial shall we We have CHR AOR Modern Rock Country Urban AC Oldies Christian Smooth Jazz News/Talk and various sub genres and a few hybrids The other formats are classical and traditional ie REAL jazz music And with a few exceptions most of that programming has been shifted to public radio What we are hearing are pretty much the same formats we had in 1982 Smooth Jazz rose from the failed attempt at making New Age music a commercial hit in 1986-87 and that was well before deregulation AAA was pioneered at stations like KEZX/fm-Seattle and KINK in Portland – also in the 1980s Modern Rock has been with us since the 1970’s So I ask you again WHAT compelling programming are we hearing If you go onto the Internet however you will hear a LOT of actually compelling genres and music styles you probably have never heard of not researched and are thus ignorant to try Techno music wasn’t pioneered through commercial radio In fact it was a wildly popular Miami pirate radio/internet station called The WOMB in the mid ’90s that launched a zillion bad imitators on commercial radio Techno might have been a fad in the mainstream but by the time corporate radio got around to it it was already blown over ltIt has never been true that locally produced radio equals quality programming gt A growing number of us would rather hear some nervous kid at least trying to get his/her chops together on the radio than old wash-ups like Limbaugh and Imus The best radio isn’t how slick you sound the best radio is how HUMAN you sound I want to hear a human voice not the bombast of a slick hard salesman ltOne can complain about the sameness of all the small town stations but there is no sameness to the people who live in those communitiesgt The sameness of small town radio came when the satellite fed formats which now dominates 85-90 of small town radio stations came into being in the 1980s Before then some stations sounded sloppier than others and some even sounded pretty good The free markets of those days took care of the sloppy stations and new local owners managers or programmers came in and revamped the stations instead of gobbling them up like pigs at a trough today Today if you wanna talk about sameness try hearing Limbaugh on anywhere from 4-8 different frequencies in the morning and God only knows how many frequencies you hear Coast to Coast AM at night In the meantime very few of these small town stations have actual LOCAL talk shows as if there were no issues of debate in small town America very few music stations with a live and local line up of air talent somebody who might feel the local earthquake too when it happens and instead have somebody who will just keep talking or playing the music as if nothing went wrong I’d sure hate to be lulled back to sleep this way if the gas was leaking ltMaybe we should have put a stop to this insidious duplication years ago by stopping Paul Harvey from being on so many radio stations and what about all those terrible tv stations that run the same network programming Are they too destroying the fabric of American Media I don’t think sogt Television is more of a national medium because it’s non-mobile Radio goes everywhere You listen to it to find out what is going on locally you listen to it to find local news in emergencies TV can and often does break in when there is breaking news Most tv stations have a surprising amount of actual local content more than most satellite fed or many voicetracked stations Most radio during a local earthquake a year ago was slow to unresponsive The only radio station right on it with instant details was a news/talk station in Seattle Locally in my area the stations continued their satellite fed music programming as if nothing went wrong making the station sound absolutely unreliable and incompetent ie cheap tightwads Imagine this on a national scale with voicetracking on music stations and only national radio talk show hosts on the news talk stations ltI’ve heard all the arguments about lack of diversity because of deregulationgt Until the big conglomerate buys out the station or forces it off the air via a power increase and/or frequency change It has happening in a LOT of places The FCC itself with the help of the NAB has given priority to the airwaves to larger more powerful stations KMIH a student run radio station at Mercer Island High School Mercer Island WA is being threatened by a radio station in The Dalles OR KMCQ that wants to move into the already crowded Puget Sound fm dial by claiming KMIH’s local frequency Since KMIH is 10 watts and KMCQ is 100000 watts and KMIH is non commercial and KMCQ is commercial and KMCQ has millions to burn while KMIH struggles for donations guess who is likely to win out Now you tell me that’s NOT killing truly local flavor and diversity ltIf there are fewer of them today than in the past it is more likely to be a function of their lack of competitiveness in general rather than as a direct result of any consolidationgt HELLO! Consolidation ENDS competitiveness In Seattle they have no competing AOR stations one company owns all the AC formats all the rock stations except the classic rock station are owned by one company The only places you can find a wide variety of anything on the radio and true competition in the region is in the north Puget Sound area where Canadian signals are receivable as clearly as the Seattle signals ltI must tell you that I have noticed no shortage of talent or good programminggt There were distinct differences in formats and playlists that the critics overlooked in those days Today not only does the music sound the same but with voicetracking so do the air personalities But you can’t expect a whole lot of greatness from young people who are basically trained only to be low or unpaid intern and very little else Then expected to claw their way to the top The odds that person will even have a career after school and tuition spent are very slim in an industry so cutthroat and egocentric without a lot of hard sucking up That’s not a career that’s masochism ltThe industry has lost nothing with the passing of one trade magazine Gavingt No just when all you’ve got is Radio amp Records at 10 each week and deeper news only available online with a 400-500 subscription to the magazine you begin to wonder why it is so damn expensive and what are they hiding from the average person by making it so high priced and exclusive If you see someone working their tail off in a job and an outstanding employee you had damn well better believe that person is entitled to a job and an asset to the business and how dare you suggest otherwise You can make a lot of enemies with that kind of logic Mr Law But then again making enemies is a national sport amongst radio executives ltDo we know everything we need to know about running radio stations in this new environment Diversity is alive and well heregt It’s when you deliberately cut throats and stab backs to ‘maximize profits’ then there is something not only terribly wrong but completely unethical ltChange is tough Especially when it hits you personally But one thing is certain change is constant and we each have a choice of getting in the way of change or trying to manage that change in a responsible mannergt But who benefits from that change The listeners You just admitted they’re finding other alternatives to the radio The lower employees I’ve lost count of how many of my former colleagues how been downsized out of the business So that just leaves those on the upper middle management and on top who benefit ltThere are a lot of big names that have lost their jobs for one reason or another and then made the choice to come back strong rather than sit and whine about the changing factors that caused them to lose their jobs Just to name a few: Howard Stern Don Imus Tom Leykis and Rick Deesgt They lost their jobs and came back BEFORE deregulation Nice try but no cigar ltThere are also a great number of smaller names that are making their way through consolidation without a lot of fanfare They are simply trying to figure out how to make this new world work and they are trying their best to do a good job every day The ones that bring something to the table will be around for a long timegt If they ever find the table And it would help your employees if you gave them a little guidance through this glorious ‘new world’ by giving their jobs some stability so they can understand it a little more and maybe even prepare themselves before you rip the rug right out from under their feet ltI’m sorry Mr Spencer lost his job but he needs to stop wishing for what was and start working on making his way in what is and what is about to begt If truth’s were vipers Mr Law the pro-consolidation people in this industry would all be dead The fact is this is simply set up to give the most wealth to the richest players It’s not about quality it’s not about ‘saving the radio’ and it’s time you quit the Orwellian doublespeak because you are absolutely fooling nobody but yourselves Come right out and just tell the truth as it is That it IS all about money and power no matter what it takes isn’t it” – talent required for this whatsoever Believe me I should know I’ve been doing it long enough” Dick continued “I don’t believe in ratings and surveys The way you know you’re doing well is to look at your log if you have a bunch of commercials in there you know you’ll be back the next day” He valued the friendships with his sponsors and advertisers: I play golf with some of the fellows Cadillac while at KNX 1070 The station was among the all-time great news radio stations of its day She got to participate in its best days and sadly its more recent worst days Kudos to Kathy for lasting nearly 40 years due the professional she clearly is Shame on KNX not just for her interpretation of poor treatment but also for becoming a shadow of its formerly great broadcasting stature What used to be my first tune in destination is now among my last I hear the same from many industry people most of whom have fond memories of KNX being the absolute best source of local news Now we rely primarily on ratings Now K-Earth 101 receives the Marconi Award for Legendary Station of the Year at the recent NAB conference in Dallas “What a great honor to join Jeff Federman and Larry Morgan to accept the Marconi for Legendary Station of the Year our third Marconi in the last four years” enthused KRTH program director Chris Ebbott “Legendary is such a great word for K-Earth – 47 years of entertaining Southern California So many legendary there’s that word again programmers personalities sales people managers engineers and others have contributed to its success Chris is immensely proud of the current crew at K-Earth “This team has brought K-Earth to the highest ratings and revenue success in its five-decade history” Chris continued “We’ve done it by recognizing the core timeless and unchanging values innate to the K-Earth brand things like fun times a So-Cal vibe and personal connection with the audience while updating them to today’s target We’ve been bold in forging forward with both the music and presentation to make the station relevant to today’s Southern California listener We’ve had to be strong in our convictions – many industry experts over the last five years have proclaimed we were ruining K-Earth with our evolution But you don’t become ‘Legendary’ without a willingness to change with the times Sometimes that means tough decisions that aren’t always popular” In the ratings that were released this week K-Earth showed as the 1 cuming station in the market – over 3 million listeners per week “We were 1 in the key A25-54 demo 2 A18-49 and even made the Top 5 A18-34” said Ebbott “There have been months this year where we were 1 in all three demos” Ebbott r was generous in his praise for those working at KRTH “I would nominate them all for 2019 2019 I just retired early from KNX Official October first I was the most tenured person there at the end a Producer/Writer/Editor Total running time: 38 years eight months I started as an intern in 1981 Weekends I got lucky It was a paid internship I had earned it in school at CSUN and my material started airing on KNX my second weekend there Later I added duties as producer Face to Face: a live in-studio four times a day eight-minute interview program hosted by Jere Laird Syndicated to the other CBS owned and operated stations back when they were allowed only seven each: AM FM and TV I worked 20 hours weekdays around my class schedule And I continued my internship on weekends too until graduation Then I got lucky again They needed a junior newswriter I got the job I worked every writing producing and editing shift they had I also subbed for the assignment editor for a few months when that was a management position and the AE was out for surgery When I was in school I had actually envisioned a career on the air but I never got traction on that at KNX I’d been voted Best Anchor at KCSN back when students were actually able to broadcast over the airwaves In a visit to CSUN a year ago I learned that’s no longer the case Such a pity When I started at KNX there were two wide spaced pages of reporters listed on the weekly schedules We had Boyd Harvey and Mike Landa at the Orange County Bureau Alex Sullivan and Jon Goodman in downtown L-A Gary Clark in Ventura County I know I’m missing others with regular beats There were all kinds of general assignment reporters Sports live from 5 am through the end of the last local game of the night Stringers Jim Ness in the Inland Empire and Pat Davis in Sacramento In Washington at Stations News Service Les Woodruff and Wes Vernon reported exclusively for the CBS O and O’s taking a station-personalized approach on their coverage Now KNX has fewer than 10 reporters One usually on weekends Writers and editors carry the load of finding other ways of covering stories and filling airtime But they don’t have final say over what airs Current management has given anchors free reign to ad lib the news When I started at KNX IBEW engineers were required to touch any equipment besides the wire machines… we had AP UPI and Reuters plus City News Service Their ribbons had to be changed and the paper They printed hard on three stacked pieces of paper fed on a roll Periodically someone would get up and go back into the wire room and rip off the latest several feet or yards of new information The editor would assign stories handing the writer the source copy from which to develop a piece written on a manual typewriter with giant print onto a six book… six pieces of paper joined at the perforated top and separated by carbon paper So each story could run six times… three in a dual anchor situation… before someone had to go up to the fifth floor and xerox new copies to be used later in the day The day we went to dot matrix daisy wheel printers for the wires was the day we could start wearing white to work for the first time without fear of winding up covered in ink! Now of course stories are all written digitally Once upon a time we got stacks of newspapers delivered daily read by several and stored for weeks When I left KNX print was a thing of the past and the station had subscriptions online to a handful of publications When I asked news director Julie Chin for a newsroom subscription to the New York Times she told me to buy my own I told her I would if I got a raise She said I was hilarious and should be a stand-up comedian Anyway IBEW was eventually bought off decades ago and editors writers and newbies hired for Radio News Exchange or RNX were suddenly in charge of using all the equipment I became an excellent razor-blade and grease-pencil editor Eventually late for the industry KNX went digital I was one of the original power users and was enlisted to teach others how to word-process and about the Internet When we moved from our longtime home at 6121 Sunset to 5670 Wilshire we finally abandoned analog entirely dropping carts for wavs The software rep Tom Haule and I taught everyone how to edit audio on a computer Someone said of me in your column ten years back Don when you were doing anonymous surveys ‘She turns out tons of content under unbelievable deadlines’ And so I did I may not have been the best writer KNX ever saw but I worked hard And I was rewarded for it by outside organizations Over the years I helped bring home 18 Golden Mikes a handful of AP Mark Twains some Press Club and UPI awards and a Murrow in 2017 for KNX Some were team efforts behind the scenes others all mine I collected the hardware for many years but stopped after KFWB died as a news station and our real competition wasn’t in the game any longer I served as Shop Steward for the WGA west for more than 20 years — 12/24/94-2000ish And then 2003ish to 2019 Also served on the Guild’s Board of Directors for eight years and its National Council for a few of those Just before leaving KNX I helped negotiate my last contract for the WGA folks at KNX Thank god several contracts back we negotiated our way out of the CBS plan and into the Producer-Writers Guild of America Pension Plan It’s my ticket out I made my decision to leave for good after informing program director Ken Charles that I needed to take a medical absence His stunning response was that I should take my knee high hidden refrigerator with me because ‘There is no need for it to sit here empty while you are out’ So I did What a shame it ends this way It will surprise no one who knows me that I intend to keep traveling I’m looking forward to artistic pursuits including writing that doesn’t include the words ‘is on the scene’ or ‘allegedly’ You can send a congratulatory to Kathy at: vox4buxyahoocom This license plate caught my eye yesterday parked in front of Chipotle in Kingman Arizona I was giving my order when I turned and saw 2 gals get into it and drive off before I could talk to them Do any of your readers know who belongs to these plates Inquiring minds have to know! – Mike Wagner Yo! KRLA’s Jennifer Horn and Brian Whitman were featured in a segment at Spectrum News 1 Al Franken Chooses Radio SiriusXM for His Comeback September 30 2019 Al Franken is trying to make a comeback The former Saturday Night Live writer and performer was forced to give up his US Senate seat in 2017 after allegations of sexual misconduct Now the former Minnesota Senator is reemerging on Sirius XM every Saturday morning Franken’s political career collapsed by the MeToo movement after KABC’s Leeann Tweeden r was one of seven women who came forward to accuse Franken of inappropriate touching He has apologized for some of the behavior he was accused of yet has not ruled out another run for office He has said he regrets his decision to resign from the Senate and wishes he had appeared before a Senate Ethics Committee hearing The former Senator will feature conversations with figures in the political entertainment media and technology industries His first guest Saturday was comedian Chris Rock who was on SNL with Franken when both were cast members in the early 1990s Regardless of what this means for Franken’s image the move is likely to pay off for SiriusXM Michael Harrison publisher of TALKERS told CNN Business Franken “will probably be very successful within the structure of SiriusXM because they’re free of a lot of restraints and obstacles facing terrestrial radio” SiriusXM carried Franken’s Air America Radio show before he entered politics from 2004 until he announced his candidacy for the US Senate on the show in 2007 His show arguably gave Franken the platform he needed to run successfully for the Senate Harrison added Many considered Franken the face of the short-lived Air America Progressive radio network which never escaped the reality of a lack of money Within 30 days of their debut the new network was expressing financial woes Bankruptcy was filed shortly after launching the network From 2004-06 Air America captured headlines mostly negative In 2006 when they started laying employees off they were told there would be no severance without capital infusion or bankruptcy When Franken left it was speculated that he was owned 300000 Al told Radar at the time “We do know that there have been cash-flow problems I haven’t been paid in a while Like there’s no cash flowing to me” Air America first aired in 2004 on KBLA 1580 AM Hoping to get sued for the resultant publicity Al originally called his show “The O’Franken Factor” as a tongue-in-cheek homage to Bill O’Reilly Franken was the first hire “I’m so happy that Air America Radio will be on in three battleground states New York Illinois and California… no wait…those aren’t the battleground states What the hell are we doing” said Franken KBLA had a less-than-desirable signal translate it couldn’t be heard in much of the Southland Clear Channel now iHeart Media took on some of the network in January 2005 on KTLK 1150 AM Others heard on KTLK included: Ed Shultz Randi Rhodes and Janeane Garofalo Back in 2005 the annual LARP survey of the top midday showed Al’s show came in 5th beaten by The Triplets on KLSX KFI’s Rush Limbaugh Dennis Prager on KRLA and Sean Hannity at KABC Al did beat Dan Patrick KSPN Dr Laura Schlessinger KFI Steve Jones Indie 1031/fm Bob McCormick KNX and Jim Rome XTRA Sports Rush Limbaugh scored a 44 share 12 on KFI in the Spring ’05 Arbitron while Al had a share of 12 at KTLK Franken was born in New York City but grew up in the Minneapolis suburb of St Louis Park He graduated from Harvard University in 1973 then in 1975 he and writing partner Tom Davis joined the writing staff of Saturday Night Live during its first season They soon started appearing in sketches and Franken remained a fixture on the show well into the 1990s At LARadio the trajectory of the new network was frequently mentioned in various ways: In the summer of 2005 Bobby Ocean ex-KHJ participated in what summer books LARPs were reading “Just finished Liesand the Lying Liars Who Tell Them by Al Franken Thought it wouldn’t have much shelf life after the elections but it’s fabulous!” Tom Leykis offered his criticism of Air America “The incredible Randi Rhodes is most definitely a broadcaster – her show is compelling informative and entertaining Of course she was doing radio long before Air America came about Air America’s biggest mistake was in not making Randi the centerpiece of their programming and not pairing Al Franken with a compelling broadcaster to shape and direct his show Franken as a guest or a sidekick on a show is great but Franken in the driver’s seat just doesn’t work” In February 2005 LARadio interviewed Franken at the Magic Castle where he was doing a meet and greet with the advertising community Some highlights from the LARadio interview: ∙ So much of Al’s career was scripted or written out for him he was one of the original writers on SNL in the mid-70s All of a sudden he would be faced with a blank canvas of three hours on the radio to fill on a daily basis Did he ever have any doubts that he could do it “We did two weeks of shows as rehearsal” remembered Al “and the show has not changed all that much from the early rehearsals I thought I would do regular features as they come up I wanted to have interviews with people I respect and who I can learn from and the audience can learn from And I want to do some of my own ranting every once in a while and I want some comedy that’s wittier We just had the same kind of mix the whole time I felt like I couldn’t bloviate for three hours” ∙ Air America was forced to purchase the air time in order to get on radio stations in Los Angeles and Chicago Air America worked out a deal with the owner of 1580 AM Bob Vistocky was hired to spearhead the sales operation Within three weeks bills weren’t being paid by Air America and the plug had been pulled at KBLA 1580 AM ∙ “What happened was the original chairman led people to believe there was more money than there was” remembered Al When the house of Air America began to collapse Al knew it was unacceptable to leave “It was within my rights to leave My contract was immediately being violated I became an involuntary investor but I thought the thing was too important and there were people coming to save it I felt the best thing I could do was just keep my head down and work on the show to make it the best I could and try to get ratings I knew that would ultimately determine if we were going to sink or swim” ∙ Al didn’t get involved with the financial side of things during the tenuous times He knew that pulling out was not an option “It would have sunk the thing” said Al “It would have proven once and for all that it doesn’t work and there is no liberal audience but I knew that liberal radio would work All that I knew at that time was liberal radio didn’t have the capital” He said that FOX News Channel lost 130 million in its first two years “It’s all about having enough money to keep going until you start making a profit” When LA and Chicago dropped Air America Al didn’t feel the loss within his show because he takes very few phone calls but he was thrilled to be back on in LA Actors Meg Ryan and Rob Reiner made in-person appearances Monday morning at the Magic Castle “He also had LA Times editorial page director Michael Kinsley and West Wing writer Lawrence O’Donnell on the show” added KTLK station manager John Quinlan The room was filled to capacity Monday “We actually had to turn away at least a hundred or so more listeners who wanted in” said John Al Franken’s weekly show airs at 7 am of News Radio in the Desert September 24 2019 What radio people do when the radio gig ends For over twenty years LARadiocom has been tracking the jet stream of great personalities It has been fun tracking their next move when the plane lands It has also been heartbreaking tracking their next move How healthy is a career in radio My father never understood how I could make a living doing something I loved so much He would dismissively say “Radio is not a career” When I was making 95 a week at my first job at KNEZ-Lompoc it was always the hope that a bigger market would be around the corner And then what Once someone made it to the Los Angeles radio market eventually the gig ended Where to now Some returned to an earlier market but opportunities soon shrank with the economy and stations consolidating A decade ago I spent a few days in Palm Springs interviewing personalities for a series ‘LARPs in the Desert’ Dave Hull voted one of the Top 10 personalities between 1957 and 1999 was now living and working in the desert Elliot Field the last dj alive from the iconic days of the ‘Seven Swingin’ Gentlemen’ of Top 40 KFWB was working in radio owned an advertising agency and was the Mayor of the desert community for a time There were others Gene Nichols worked in the news department at KFI and he moved to the desert in 1998 to start a new radio life A few years back he spoke to the local Kiwanis group about radio the role it played in the past and the current role in the Palm Springs market “None of the people I started with are working with me anymore About five of us were let go in 2016” Gene signaled the beginning of the end of local news radio to 2008 “There was a change in the way content and news is delivered and received and our owners got very old When you get north of 90 years of age you’re way too old to be in radio They thought they didn’t need a news department or public affairs department anymore Two weeks after the firings the R amp R radio stations were sold to Alpha Media which owned 252 radio stations at the time They are a big player They are corporate out of Portland Anything you want to do including inhaling and exhaling has to be approved through corporate They didn’t want the AM stations” Gene said “I mention the fact that nobody really wants AM stations It is indictment of what’s happening to news and public affairs in smaller markets Only the bigger markets can afford news/talk like KFI and KNX in Los Angeles” When the tragic shooting happened in San Bernardino where 14 were killed the Palm Springs outlet would normally send news people to cover the event They had no department There was no one to send Since KPSI was a CBS affiliate for seven hours they simulcast KNX The world of radio has changed because of the way America gets its news “Older people may still want to read a newspaper” said Nichols “Younger people not so much They get everything they need from the device in their hand Radio has seen its advertising drop off The stations no longer have too many things like they had years ago to pay a staff to cover events” Gene discussed what has been done to his AM stations when R amp R sold them “KPSI News Talk 920 has been a heritage station in the desert for a long time” said Gene “It is now being operated as a non-profit” The station has since been sold for 375000 with new call letters KKGX “KPTR 1450 has been donated to the College of the Desert to be used as a training station” Nichols asked rhetorically “What are we going to train people to do Train people in college To do what We’re not recommending people to go into the business as a career because it will probably be a dead-end for anyone under 60” Gene concluded his talk “Shy away from news or the information business” Angels Announcer Rushed to Hospital September 23 2019 Mark Langston veteran of the Los Angeles Angels radio group since 2012 and former four-time All-Star pitcher was taken to a hospital Friday night in Houston because of a medical emergency Angels tv broadcaster Victor Rojas shared an update on Langston from the hospital around midnight Friday and Astros broadcaster Robert Ford described the scene in the Angels’ radio booth Scary sight tonight watching things unfold in the booth two doors down from us Currently sitting with Langer in ER and he’s doing well sharing some laughs about his pizza intake in NYC this week Rojas tweeted Keep Mark in your prayers as they continue to run through protocols Langston had just finished his pregame segment and turned the broadcast over to his partner Terry Smith for the first pitch He collapsed moments later and medics were summoned into the booth where he received CPR before being moved He will remain in Houston for several more days while he recovers according to the LA Times He was resting comfortably but still being evaluated the Angels announced Saturday A four-time American League All-Star Langston won 179 games in 16 seasons He pitched for seven teams spending eight seasons with the Angels and six with the Mariners Langston and Mike Witt combined to pitch the eighth no-hitter in Angels history on April 11 1990 Mark led the American League in strikeouts as a rookie in 1984 and again in 1985 and ’86 He became head baseball coach at Orange Lutheran High School Calif after his retirement in 1999 and guided the Lancers to a playoff berth in 2002 He was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 KBIG ad from LA Times on September 21 1969 from Dave Grudt’s personal collection Casey’s Saga Is Up to Number 13 On Our Countdown September 20 2019 Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 is alive and well on SiriusXM Whotta’ treat to hear his countdown show and the delicious tidbits about the songs and/or the artists I think about how blessed we were to have had him our lives A true pioneer As one of the initial stations to air AT40 on July 4 1970 I’ve always felt a special connection to the show and more importantly to Casey when I was general manager at W4-Detroit We met on the phone just before the debut of AT40 He was so thrilled that his parents living in Detroit would get to hear what he was doing in Los Angeles He just wanted to say thank you His tragic death with Lewy Body Dementia in June 2014 at the age of 82 was bad enough but the aftermath has all the overtones of unbelievability Now the most recent chapter of this bizarre tale is another head scratcher The widow of Casey Jean Kasem 65 was allegedly attacked by her business manager John Gressy He apparently became enraged because she was giving money to her daughter according to DailyMailcom Gressy allegedly became furious because Jean was giving money to Liberty 29 her daughter she shared with Casey law enforcement sources told TMZ The outlet reported that Gressy threw dishes and a vase at Jean She was allegedly hit at least once and was taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries It was reported that he threatened to kill Jean her attorney and Liberty who was present at the time of the incident and called 911 Police later arrived and arrested Gressy He now faces charges for felony criminal threats He had reportedly locked himself in a room before police arrived Jean Kasem’s representative Edward Lozzi told TMZ there was no truth to speculation that Gressy and Jean were in an ‘intimate or personal relationship’ But Casey’s daughter Kerri Kasem told DailyMailcom that the pair are romantically involved and he lives with her and drives her father’s old car “We have multiple amounts of evidence that this is her boyfriend There is no business manager” said Kerri “This is the reason why it happened it had nothing to do with giving her daughter Liberty money” Harcourt Milestone Internationally
