security forces rescued the employees as they had in the Febuary 14 incident “The list was prioritized so that the last items to go were the secure teletypes that kept them connected to Washington” journalist Mark Bowden wrote in his 2006 book “Guests of the Ayatollah” recounting the crisis “When it was decided to begin destroying them selected parts were culled from the various bits and either smashed with a hammer or cut in half with a saw” But saving the bulk of the machines instead only made them curiosity pieces in the Basij museum A small placard on part of the equipment simply identifies it as a “coding and electronic communication center” Against a wall near a window air conditioner sits a blue-gray metal contraption that looks like a small wood chipper A hose runs from it to a vacuum-cleaner-like device sitting over a large barrel This was the embassy’s disintegrator an industrial-style device designed to first shred documents and materials then burn them to ash inside the barrel “It was slow to work and temperamental in nature subject to jamming at the least provocation” recounted William J Daugherty a CIA officer who was among the hostages “Within a few minutes the device went ‘ka-chonk’ and shut down Using a small commercial paper shredder we continued to destroy what we could” But they left behind a huge pile of shredded strips that the students later would spend weeks piecing together like a vast jigsaw puzzle of memos and reports Other papers didn’t get shredded On one table sits a CIA report on Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa then the ruler of the Mideast island nation of Bahrain Empty safes stand open with one bearing signs of being pried apart Other rooms contain black-and-white photos of the embassy takeover A large painting of one of the images shows US Marine Sgt Ladell Maples of Earle Arkansas and Cpl Steve Kirtley of Little Rock Arkansas with their hands above their heads at the time of the takeover Images like those of The outgoing prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has only 55 of the 61 mandates required to form a governing coalition Benny Gantz the head of the Blue and White party says he wants to form a “liberal unity government” with Likud and Avigdor Liberman but he too lacks the necessary 61 seats and thus far he has not succeeded in detaching any of the 55 mandates from Netanyahu’s bloc Lieberman is determined to take Netanyahu down but if he were to join a center-left coalition he would torpedo the political career he built on far-right secular nationalism and hatred of Arabs So he is sitting on the fence The only way out of this paralysis is a minority government coalition composed of Blue and White Labor-Gesher and the Democratic Camp with the support of the Joint List — and without Liberman Blue and White however is not quite ready for this move Nor are its potential political allies prepared to bridge the gaps between their disparate views This situation encapsulates the argument for creating a new political movement that is based on shared values Instead of continuing to define as right or left liberal or conservative religious or secular we need a political and civil society partnership between Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel who share a commitment to combating Israel’s greatest national threat: Jewish supremacism This Arab-Jewish partnership need not be connected to any single political party All its potential adherents would need is a shared understanding that a truly democratic government and an end to the conflict requires equal citizenship for Arab and Jewish citizens of Israel and that a political partnership between the two peoples will have a mobilizing influence both on Israel and on the entire region between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River Given today’s political map such a movement could be represented by a partnership between the Joint List Labor-Bridge and the Democratic Camp There are significant ideological differences between each of these parties but they all share the view that equal rights for all Israeli citizens is a crucial issue and that securing those rights can only be achieved through some type of cross-party political partnership There are 24 mandates in the current Knesset that would potentially be amenable to a partnership and that number could grow Voter turnout among Arab-Palestinian citizens increased in recent election cycles going as high as 59 percent Turnout for local elections goes as high as 85 percent If Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel were convinced that there was a true Arab-Jewish partnership committed to equality for all citizens the turnout could rise even further Potentially a coalition of parties that share the commitment to combating Jewish supremacism could have 30 seats in the Knesset Partnership does not prescribe the merging — or erasure — of the two distinct national groups in Israel into one However it must establish an equitable foundation for both as collectives and as individuals in which neither group has superiority over the other This partnership is based on a recognition that both the Palestinian and Jewish citizens of this land are members of co-nations The discourse around this partnership should not be limited to ethical questions Many Israelis regardless of their political leanings understand today that two nations exist in Israel This is our reality If the partnership movement realizes how to link its values to this reality it might find supporters even unlikely places that seem far-fetched today This will be challenging but the need to confront rising anti-democratic trends might lead to crossing lines that previously seemed impossible A movement based on partnership between Arabs and Jews would set an aspirational standard for the entire region between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River Instead of fighting for a two-state solution divided by a hostile border it would aspire to a border based on partnership — because a border that is created and maintained with hostility is demographically geographically economically and emotionally impossible According to long-held received wisdom equal civil rights for Palestinian and Jewish citizens of Israel will only come after a two-state solution is negotiated and implemented This obviously has not come to pass The proponents of a new political movement based on partnership between Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel believe the opposite — that the resolution to the conflict will come from Israel proper within the Green Line and will spread outward This civil partnership can also create a new political identity which is predicated on a shared national sensibility This does mean an erasure of national identity but rather the birth of a collegial commitment to a shared nationality of two national groups that take pride in their respective identities but understand that the best way to express their it is through a partnership between the two groups Their shared goal: to combat Jewish supremacism as Jewish and Arab co-nationalists Partnership is a political position that can inspire a new political identity which in turn can create the political force necessary for its realization Liberalism and democracy are the pillars of this movement but not the only ones Particular national identity can also inform this movement as long as it does not demand superiority This is not a melting pot movement Rather it is one of unity through partnership while maintaining a respect for separate national identities In the territory between the Mediterranean and the Jordan the real struggle is between Jewish supremacy and co-nationalism Each and every one of us must choose a side Meron Rapoport is an editor at Local Call where a forming governments spending on average several months in the process It took more than two years to find its current president and nine months to create Hariri’s government Also on rtcom Iran’s dispute right up to the Israeli border Hezbollah are very serious players Created by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard after Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982 they hold three cabinet seats in government and have more power domestically than the Lebanese armed forces The US in looking for ways to strong-arm Iran has realised that the financial support given to Hezbollah that comes from the Lebanese banking reveals a vulnerability Those same banks need to do global business to stay on their feet leaving them open to US sanctions which can prevent them from trading internationally crippling the banks and cutting them off as source of funding for the militants The recent case of Lebanon’s Jammal Trust Bank is typical The bank was sanctioned by the US for “knowingly facilitating banking activities” for Hezbollah militants – which it denied – and just weeks later was forced to go into self-liquidation When this happens repeatedly it obviously hurts Lebanon’s banking system and steps need to be taken to avoid it If that means doing what your US ally wants then there is the route avoiding potential collapse of the entire financial network Then on a slightly smaller scale there are the US sanctions against two Hezbollah politicians and a security official in July of this year sending yet another message to the Lebanese government that they really do need to get their house in President Trump views having an on-message Prime Minister in power in Beirut as essential to the success of a broader strategy Hariri was that friendly face and he needed support in dealing with not only Hezbollah but also his Syrian neighbours In a country of just over 6 million people Lebanon was hosting 15 million Syrian refugees and that was taking an economic and political toll at home He felt emboldened against Assad as long as he had American support but as we have seen that support came with lots of conditions Then when the US withdrew from Syria Hariri saw that play disappear The other big power in the region was Russia and he hadn’t been that nice about them in the past Transit only: US troops pulled out of Syria amp moved to Iraq are now asked OUT of the country He told one interviewer that Russia’s appearance in the region as an active player was the “unfortunate consequence” of Barack Obama’s refusal to become embroiled in the Middle East disputes and those comments would certainly have been noted in Moscow for future reference While Lebanon goes about the lengthy process of sorting out its new government probably with President Michael Aoun asking Hariri to stick around as caretaker until the matter is resolved Lebanon needs to consider who among the world powers would make the best of allies going forward Is it President Trump with an election next year and the associated risks of that He does have a hawkish stance on Iran which suits the Lebanese Or is it Russia Still active in Syria but making close friends in the region – particularly Egypt – and repression it was hard not to be overcome with a sense of nervousness and joy Also on rtcom Chile withdraws as APEC summit host after weeks of anti-government protests Anxious Chileans in and out of the country were receiving messages like this one or at least watching images of the rivers of humanity filling the country’s avenues and plazas Along with the vindication that many felt at seeing a united cry against how the country has been run there was also an unavoidable dread that set in at the sight of military patrols in the streets live rounds being fired at unarmed protesters batons cracking the heads of seemingly innocuous pedestrians and police rounding up students in their homes This wasn’t the first time Chile saw scenes like this The US-backed military brutality of the Augusto Pinochet regime laid the foundation for a restructuring of the country in the image of free-market crusaders imported from Chicago By the time they were done Chile had achieved what they called a ‘miracle’ the private sector was involved in every sphere of life free from the legal and ethical constraints under socialism but with an economic decline not seen in the country since the 1930s GDP fell by 143 and 1 out of every 4 Chileans was left unemployed After the first wave of Chileans fleeing the bloody aftermath of the right-wing coup families like mine were part of a second large emigration in the 1980s who left to look for work When Chileans voted to end Pinochet’s rule in 1988 it was clear that the expectations were an end to state repression as well as a change in the institutions laws and norms created under his regime But in almost 30 years of civilian government 20 of which were under purportedly ‘left’ governments people saw the signs of wealth around them without being a part of it Also on rtcom The Russians are meddling again this time in Chile warns US diplomat As Claudio Bravo goalkeeper for the Chilean national football team and Manchester City tweeted in the initial days of these demonstrations “They sold our water electricity gas education health pensions medicines our roads forests the Atacama salt flats the glaciers transportation into private hands Anything else Isn’t this too much We do not want a Chile for the few” The sentiment expressed by Bravo hardly a leftist in his own right summarized the situation and sentiment in the streets The post-dictatorship consensus of Chile’s political class has been to continue administering the neoliberal state set up by Pinochet and Co but under the auspices of Washington While the privatization of services and deregulations certainly began under Pinochet the governments of the ‘Concertación’ comprising the Christian Democrats Socialists and others did little to detain and reverse these and in many ways continued them It is no coincidence that these protests started in Santiago’s Metro system Rapid transit in the capital has been increasingly built out under private-public partnerships and the privatization of the Metro itself began under socialist president Michelle Bachelet When these fares hikes were announced by the government of Sebastian Pinera they were justified on the basis that ‘an expert panel’ determined fares should increase Transit users were told that if they could not afford the increases then they should get up earlier and go home later in order to avoid paying fares during peak hours It’s this ‘let them eat cake’ attitude under the guise of technocracy coupled with the shameless corruption of politicians of all political stripes that has fueled the frustrations of daily living and finally caused this anger to hit a fever pitch The right-wing Chilean government has scrambled to present ‘remedies’ to this anger including a pointless cabinet shuffle and meagre increases in minimum wages and pensions But these measures are insufficient and things have gone beyond the point where people will be pacified by them In the streets Chileans are saying “this isn’t about 30 cents the increase in fares it’s about 30 years” under the neoliberal state which was also promoted by Washington and its appendages as a model to emulate and then exported across the region by brute force Also on rtcom Protesters in Chile disrupt lithium mines with road blockade amid growing anti-government demonstrations US business interests’ long standing ties in Chile which was one of the principal reasons for Washington’s involvement in the 1973 coup and support for the dictatorship that restored the place of US capital in the country are central to shaping Chile’s political role in the region The dutifully promoted US business interests are integral to the neoliberal model pushed by successive Chilean governments in the region and go hand-in-hand with Washington’s foreign policy imperatives as can be seen with attempts to topple the government of Venezuela and the transparent oil interests involved After more than three decades the majority of Chileans have now woken up from the neoliberal model and told the world that this model isn’t as advertised What is taking place in Chile’s streets is neoliberalism’s death knell in the very place where it was birthed at the barrel of a gun But Chile isn’t the only Latin American battleground for this fight Earlier in October Ecuadorians led massive protests against the austerity measures implemented by the government of Lenin Moreno under the terms of his agreement with the US-dominated International Monetary Fund Later in the month Evo Morales won another election in Bolivia and US ally Mauricio Macri suffered a stunning first round defeat in Argentina Also on rtcom Confirmed as winner Bolivia’s Morales invites international community for election audit after opposition says vote was rigged It may be too early to characterize this as a second ‘Pink Tide’ or something of the sort but there is no doubt that something big is taking place the new ‘public square’ Palestinians are being denied equal access… By Alison Weir While Facebook is in the midst of a controversy in which Palestinian journalists are complaining that the company has a different standard for Palestinians than for Israelis Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg publicly pledged 25 million to an organization that advocates for Israel This action was in line with Sandberg’s life history of connection to Israel And it coincided with Facebook’s pattern of a double standard for Palestinians vs Israelis While some American organizations that work on the Palestinian issue have largely been able to function on Facebook with relatively small difficulties including the one I work for the story for Palestinians living in the occupied Territories has been markedly different As we will see for years there has been evidence that the company discriminates against Palestinian users arbitrarily closing their pages taking down their content and suppressing their information This is particularly significant because in today’s world mega social media companies like Facebook have taken on profound importance In a recent US Supreme Court majority opinion Justice Anthony Kennedy described social media sites as a “modern public square” He stated: “These websites can provide perhaps the most powerful mechanisms available to a private citizen to make his or her voice heard” For Palestinians who have little access to the outside world access to this virtual public square is particularly crucial And yet they’re often being denied it ‘Censorship rampage’ In 2016 the Intercept reported that Facebook had begun “collaborating with the Israeli government to determine what should be censored” In 2017 The Intercept reported: “Facebook has been on a censorship rampage against Palestinian activists who protest the decades-long illegal Israeli occupation all directed and determined by Israeli officials Indeed Israeli officials have been publicly boasting about how obedient Facebook is when it comes to Israeli censorship orders” In 2018 there were reports that Facebook had closed 500 Facebook pages of Palestinian activists journalists and bloggers in just the first three months of the year Currently Palestinian journalists and activists say Facebook restrictions against Palestinian pages have “dramatically increased” Quds News: “ Anti-Facebook Bias Campaign Trends on Social Media“ The problem has become so significant that on October 7 they launched a campaign called “Facebook Blocks Palestine” The goal was to reveal the “double standard policy of Facebook management” and end the suppression of Palestinian information Yet despite the campaign a short while later Facebook deleted yet another Palestinian page: this time of a news organization founded in 1997 that had almost five million followers As often seems to be the case for Palestinians–and in violation of Facebook’s own stated process–Facebook provided no prior warning or explanation for its action Deciding what stays and what goes Over the years it appears that Facebook has tried to develop strategies to make fair rational decisions about which content to remove because it constitutes “hate speech” or “incitement” Facebook strategies have included instituting a review process and increasingly creating algorithms to automate the process Despite Facebook’s attempt to apply technical solutions however underlying all the strategies are human beings who may harbor biases Individuals review the appeals write the algorithms determine the “community standards” and direct the process As Sandberg herself once said “When you’re running companies particularly companies like Facebook … you set policies that affect millions tens of millions of people” It is therefore problematic for fair policies on Israel-Palestine when Facebook personnel demonstrate bias toward one side of this ethnic conflict: It’s problematic when they collaborate with an Israel advocacy organization to allegedly “combat cyberhate” when Facebook’s head is connected to the top rung of the Israeli government when its second in command is also close to Israeli leaders and makes a large very public donation to an organization devoted to advocating for Israel and when Facebook executives decide to work with the Israeli government to determine which content to remove and which accounts to take down The ADL Israel advocacy and Sandberg On Oct 16th Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg announced on Facebook that she was making “a personal gift” to the ADL While many people consider the ADL almost an official organization that fights bias–and news media virtually always repeat ADL claims without scrutiny–in reality it is a highly political private organization with no public accountability and with its own biases and agendas One of its most explicit agendas and a large focus of its work is to be a “a strong voice for Israel” Screen shot of ADL “Stand Up for Israel” page Originally formed to prevent defamation and discrimination against Jews the ADL Anti-Defamation League has now expanded its official focus to also protect other minority populations some more than others the ADL has frequently opposed Muslim American and Arab American individuals and organizations and diverse others However at the same time that the ADL opposes discrimination in the US or claims to it supports it in Israel a country that was founded on ethno-religious discrimination and established through the forcible dispossession of unwanted groups The ADL has supported Israel from its earliest days despite the fact that Israel was established in 1948 through a war of “ethnic cleansing” against the non-Jewish inhabitants and has continued this forced dispossession based on ethnicity/religion through today Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion with ADL officials in 1951 Numerous groups and individuals have documented Israel’s systemic discrimination its long record of human rights violations its violations of US laws as well as damaging actions against the US Nevertheless the ADL devotes much of its effort to Israel It advocates on its behalf with US elected officials American media and on US campuses including producing a guide about how to block campus events aimed at informing students about the Palestinian situation In a section of its website called “ADL Celebrates Israel” it states: “ADL looks back with pride on our long time support for the Jewish state” The section exhibits photos of ADL leaders meeting with the first Prime Minister of Israel David Ben-Gurion in the 1950s The ADL’s highly filtered history leaves out the fact that before the advent of political Zionism the population of the land was 95 percent non-Jewish that Israel was established through the forcible expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and that for decades most Jewish people around the world had opposed Zionism and that many still do Screen shot of ADL page Although the ADL claims to oppose defamation it often attacks groups and individuals its dislikes particularly those who provide information on Israel-Palestine that the ADL doesn’t wish Americans to know While the ADL’s own statements attacking disfavored groups may at times ironically amount to outright defamation almost no one is able to take on the organization given its assets of 145 million Rare exceptions were 1993 lawsuits over the ADL’s vast spying operation on Americans which had gone on for decades Eventually the ADL was forced to settle the suits paying out unknown sums of money In the interest of full disclosure I’m among the ADL’s more recent targets the organization having published false statements about me that it has refused to retract In 2017 the ADL collaborated with an Israeli think tank to produce a 2017 strategy paper on how to counter the growing public awareness of Israeli human rights violations The Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Brigadier General Sima Vaknin-Gil praised the ADL-coauthored paper: “The correlation between the Ministry’s mode of operation and what comes out of this document is very high and has already proven effective … ” Among its recommendations the 32-page document called for “industry engagement with corporations such as Google Facebook and Twitter” to burnish Israel’s reputation That same year the ADL launched the “Center for Technology and Society” whose advisory board contains a number of tech executives One is Facebook Vice President Guy Rosen who studied in Israel and is a member of the TechAviv Community LinkedIn Group whose objective is “to help Israeli startup founders and their companies succeed by harnessing the collective energy knowledge and networks of the global Israeli startup community” Guy Rosen Facebook VP of Integrity and Tessa Lyons Head of News Feed Integrity explain how Facebook manages “ problematic content” Menlo Park CA April 10 2019 Within a few months of announcing its new tech center the ADL began partnering with Facebook and the other social media giants to “fight cyberhate” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement “We look forward to tackling this pressing challenge together” Greenblatt calls himself a “proud Zionist” His wife was previously Acting Director of Israel on Campus for information on IOC see this ADL’s “educational materials” The ADL’s program includes pushing its materials within schools The ADL considers many criticisms of Israel to be “anti-Semitic” using a definition formulated by an Israeli minister The materials it provides for schools are highly selective often have clear agendas and are glaring in the ADL’s “PEP” stance Progressive Except Palestine For example: There is a high school unit on the Rohingya people but nothing on the Palestinian people The ADL provides a lesson plan on “Refugee Crisis in Europe” that makes no mention of Palestinian refugees a major refugee group and one that began long before the current crisis There is a teaching unit on nonviolent resistance that includes materials on the Holocaust civil rights sanctuary cities opposition to the US wall on the southern border etc but completely ignores the longtime Palestinian nonviolence movement the Israeli wall confiscating Palestinian land and imprisoning Palestinians the killing of nonviolence movement participants Rachel Corrie and Tom Hurndall and the 50000-strong nonviolent demonstration launched in Gaza a year and a half ago that has continued every week since A unit on “Challenging AntiSemitism: Debunking the Myths and Responding with Facts” includes a number of references to Israel and uses as a reference the Jewish Virtual Library a website managed by the American-Israeli Cooperative Project in order to “to strengthen the US-Israel relationship” The unit includes derogatory references to Christianity Islam and Arabs The ADL’s facebook posts periodically focus on Israel For example it “welcomed” the decision to remove Palestinian Zahra Biloo from the Women’s March over her criticism of Israel announced that it would discuss “bias against Israel” with UN officials and alerted its Facebook followers to a discussion about “how to fight” anti-Zionism ie the movement in support of Palestinian rights The ADL acknowledges: “The Internet is the largest marketplace of ideas the world has ever known It enables communications education entertainment and commerce on an incredible scale The Internet has helped to empower the powerless reunite the separated connect the isolated and provide new lifelines for the disabled By facilitating communication around the globe the Internet has been a transformative tool for information-sharing education human interaction and social change” But then it focuses on how to police this marketplace of ideas allegedly against hate in the form of “antisemitism” The problem is that to the ADL support for Palestinian rights and negative information about Israel all too often constitute “antisemitism” According to the ADL the many principled nonviolent actions taken by the world community on behalf of Palestinian rights have supposedly been “antisemitic” even though their participants have included a wide array of respected leaders of all races and religions Sheryl Sandberg and Israel Sandberg has visited Israel periodically throughout her life and says she feels very close to it A 2012 video shows her in a gushing Facebook event with former Israeli Prime Minister Peres in which he is called “one of the great leaders of our times” An Israeli author reports that Peres was one of those responsible “for the harsh and often arbitrary restrictions that the military imposed on the county’s Arab citizens including extensive land confiscations” He writes: “Mr Peres participated in the oppression of the Palestinians who have been living for nearly half a century under Israeli occupation” Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg with Israeli President President Reuven Rivlin August 12 2019 In August of this year Sandberg went on another of her many family visits to Israel met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and others and inaugurated a new Facebook venture in Tel Aviv At the event Sandberg announced: “I am so excited to be in Israel today This is a country that is deeply meaningful to me personally But this country is also deeply meaningful for Facebook because … this is a country of startups and entrepreneurs” Sandberg’s Facebook post announcing her gift to the ADL is startling in its timing – being announced right in the midst of a campaign about pro-Israel bias at Facebook – but not entirely out of character Sandberg often emphasizes her connection to her Jewish identity and seems somewhat oblivious to the Palestinian situation In the post Sandberg described the importance to her of her Jewish identity She said that her horror at the tragic “mass murder” of Jews in Pittsburgh 11 were killed and Germany 2 were killed inspired her to make the donation There is little to suggest she has a similar or even any concern for the tens of thousands of Palestinians murdered and maimed by the military forces of the Jewish state or the current lethal assaults on Palestinian men women and children during the weekly mass demonstrations in Gaza that had been intended to be a nonviolent Gandhian march Israel responded to the organizing announcements by deploying Israeli troops and 100 snipers Israeli soldiers have killed hundreds and injured close to 29000 of the marchers including medics journalists and children Abdullah al-Anqar 13 receives post-operative care at the MSF clinic in Gaza City on 10 June 2018 He was shot by an Israeli sniper during a demonstration along the Gaza-Israel border in May A search for donations that Sandberg may have dedicated on behalf of these victims turns up only an ambulance – that she presented to Israel which has massively less need for it than Palestinians Opposing hate and bias everywhere Sandberg and the ADL both espouse opposition to “hate” and “bias” In Sandberg’s announcement about her donation she said her money would be “supporting anti-hate programs in Europe and the US” Perhaps she could ask the ADL to expand this to address the extensive and growing hatred in Israel Sandberg’s post also said that her money would help pay for “anti-bias education and programs research and advocacy” She may wish to request that the ADL give some of this money to Israeli academic and author Nurit Peled-Elhanan who has spent years documenting the embedded anti-Palestinian bias in Israeli textbooks “One question that bothers many people” Professor Peled-Elhanan says “is how do you explain the cruel behaviour of Israeli soldiers towards Palestinians an indifference to human suffering the inflicting of suffering People ask how can these nice Jewish boys and girls become monsters once they put on a uniform” Peled-Elhanan said: “I think the major reason for that is education So I wanted to see how school books represent Palestinians” In studying hundreds of Israeli textbooks she found deeply embedded anti-Palestinian anti-Arab bias Among other things she did not find a single photograph that depicted an Arab as a “normal person” Peled-Elhanan says that as a result of the Israeli school system Israeli children grow up to serve in the army and internalize the message that Palestinians are “people whose life is dispensable with impunity And not only that but people whose number has to be diminished” Perhaps a future anti-hate anti-bias donation by Facebook’s COO could go to Peled-Elhanan’s potentially life-saving scholarship And perhaps instead of working with the Israeli government to remove Palestinian posts that document the results of this hatred and bias Facebook executives could meet with the Palestinian journalists and activists they’re censoring and listen to what they have to say Facebook executives have frequently spoken in favor of free speech It’s time to apply that principle to Palestinians Facebook can be reached at pressfbcom Comments describing the Hits: 1 Dems Hold Thursday Vote On Critical Impeachment Resolution: Here’s What You Need To Know November 1st 2019 Jesus Christ ✝ After weeks of private hearing involving employees from the White House and State Department the Democrats’ impeachment investigation is about to move into a far more public phase following what’s likely to be a historic vote on Thursday The House will call a vote on a resolution setting the rules for public impeachment proceedings And if the count comes back as expected that is straight down party lines the Dems will prevail and the next round of hearings this time public ones will be scheduled according to the New York Times The vote also marks the first time that lawmakers will go on the record with their support for the inquiry or opposition Under the proposed rules President Trump’s legal team would be allowed to present a formal defense of the president during the hearings And they would have the power to cross-examine witnesses once debate over impeachment begins and submit proposals calling for additional witnesses Sources on Capitol Hill told the NYT BBG and other media outlets that the resolution would call for a public phase to begin in three weeks Though it wouldn’t put an end to the private hearings The public hearings will largely be led by the Intelligence Committee and its Chairman Adam Schiff one of the leaders of the impeachment inquiry and a favorite target of President Trump The resolution also sets the stage for the material gathered during the investigation phase to be turned over to the Judiciary Committee and Chairman Jerrold Nadler another favorite Trump antagonist who would hold additional hearings where Trump and/or his lawyers would be allowed to participate Ultimately the Judiciary Committee will be responsible for drawing up articles of impeachment Though the Dems’ rules allow the president pretty much all of the rights demanded by his legal team there’s likely to still be squabbling between the Dems and Republicans particularly over whether to call certain witnesses like the still-anonymous whistleblower who first filed a complaint about possible quid-pro-quo surrounding the July 25 call between Trump and Ukrainian leader Zelensky The White House slammed the Dems’ resolution saying that it only proved that the investigation had been an “illegitimate sham” Under the resolution’s rules said White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham Trump wouldn’t be afforded due process until the proceedings were nearly finished Those are pretty much the basics of the resolution Here’s a guide to what comes next courtesy of NPR: Open hearings The resolution designates House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff D-Calif as the point person to preside over any public hearings “The American people will hear firsthand about the President’s misconduct” Schiff said in a statement on Monday but he has not indicated which witnesses he would call Schiff and the top Republican on the panel Devin Nunes R-Calif are the two lawmakers who would lead the questioning in hearings — but they can yield to their staff counsels The bulk of the questioning during closed-door depositions conducted to date has been done by Democratic and Republican committee lawyers Republicans can request witnesses to appear at the open hearings and can request that subpoenas be approved but those need to be approved by the majority Democrats have said they would like William Taylor to testify in open session He is the top US diplomat in Ukraine and he gave a detailed account of the parallel foreign policy effort led by Rudy Giuliani the president’s personal attorney to leverage military assistance for investigations into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Committee public report The resolution directs the Intelligence Committee to issue a report on its findings and recommendations and send the report to the House Judiciary Committee which will consider any potential articles of impeachment It also has to be publicly released The report will be made in consultation with the House Foreign Affairs and Oversight committees — the two other panels that have been participating in the witness interviews so far It is also up to Schiff to publicly release any transcripts of closed-door testimony — potentially removing or blocking sensitive information Pelosi and most House Democrats have stressed that the current impeachment probe be narrowly focused on the issues around the Ukraine matter But all the House panels investigating any potential impeachment issues are directed to send their evidence to the Judiciary Committee Judiciary hearing on articles of impeachment The House Judiciary Committee is the panel that has jurisdiction over impeachment proceedings Once the Intelligence Committee sends its report to the panel it can begin the process of drafting articles of impeachment Top Democrats argue that the president’s alleged push to withhold military assistance for Ukraine — which Congress had already authorized — in order to secure a commitment for an investigation for his own domestic political benefit is grounds for an article of impeachment But it’s unclear what the specific charge in the article would be Articles of impeachment are compared to an indictment and the standard set forth in the Constitution is broad and at the discretion of the majority: “high crimes and misdemeanors” Schiff has made it clear that he does not plan to go to court to enforce subpoenas for testimony and documents from those administration officials who have refused to comply Instead he has maintained that those Trump officials “will be building a very powerful case against the president for obstruction — an article of impeachment based on obstruction” Judiciary markup and vote on articles of impeachment The Judiciary Committee released its own procedures on Tuesday for how it will consider any articles of impeachment separate from the House resolution Chairman Jerry Nadler D-NY said in a written statement that the committee’s process confers “rights for the minority and for the President equal to those provided during the Nixon and Clinton inquiries” These include the ability of the president’s lawyers to receive copies of documents and evidence to attend sessions and hearings when evidence is being presented to question witnesses and to respond to the Democrats’ arguments Republicans have complained that the process allowed for the Judiciary Committee should also be allowed for the open Intelligence Committee hearings Full House vote on articles of impeachment Once the Judiciary Committee completes its hearings and votes on any articles of impeachment its report would go to the full House for a vote There is no timeline for these next steps in the House but Democratic leaders have indicated that they would like to wrap up the process before the end of the year If the House passes the articles and votes to impeach the process then heads to the Senate Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that if the House approves articles and transmits them to the Senate he will begin the process of holding a trial and ultimately a vote on whether to acquit or remove the president The vote is expected later in the day on Thursday exactly when is still unclear Anybody who wants to read the
