the construction of settlements for Israelis Today Palestinians constitute 37 percent of Jerusalem’s population however only 15 percent of East Jerusalem and 85 percent of the total area of the city is zoned for their residential use “It’s true that we built the house without a legal permit” said Abbasi his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep three days after the demolition “But we tried to get a permit we tried several times We got an engineer and an architect and a lawyer I paid 30000 to the planning authorities We were waiting to go to court” Four months ago the municipality also demolished a row of small shops and offices Abbasi and his brother had built down the hill from his house His brother had used one of the spaces for his accounting office and another brother had a furniture business in one of the shops There was also a small cafe at the site All three brothers lost their livelihood when the buildings were destroyed Abbasi a plumber and carpenter by trade has not been able to go back to work he said “I don’t know how I will continue because they not only destroyed a house they demolished a whole family The first time they hurt my livelihood then they destroyed my home” said Abbasi The municipality did not respond to phone and email requests for comment on house demolitions in East Jerusalem in general or on the specific cases mentioned in this article ‘This is to show them who is boss here’ Between 1991-2018 municipal planners approved a total of 48201 housing units in Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem 21834 of which are in Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem In Palestinian neighborhoods of East Jerusalem only 9536 units were approved Ir Amim researcher Aviv Tatarsky cited an “astonishing” gap between what the municipality has approved in the Jewish and Palestinian neighborhoods of East Jerusalem This year he said some 12000 housing units were approved for Jewish neighborhoods compared to a mere 1500 in Palestinian neighborhoods “It is chronic discrimination and one of the issues most hurtful for Palestinians” said Tatarsky “The problem is we tend to focus too much on the issue of settlements and we forget that Palestinians are marrying and need homes regardless of the big political issue” Tatarsky believes that Israel’s planning and building policy is motivated by demographic considerations: they want to annex land without including too many Palestinians According to this theory Palestinians will leave Jerusalem if they cannot build a home in the city But Jerusalem expert and lawyer Daniel Seidemann said the issue is more about asserting Israeli control rather than pushing Palestinians out “This is to show who is boss here To show that yes you Palestinians have rights here but they can be withdrawn you have property here but we can expropriate you have residency rights but we can cancel them” he said “The subjugation of Palestinians is included in the occupation The atmosphere is difficult so Israel is doubling down on the occupation…using repressive and controlling measures in order to sustain itself” Additionally Seidemann said since most Palestinians in East Jerusalem do not vote in municipal elections politicians have no incentive to take up their cause Just below French Hill a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem Ishaq Hamdan a 55-year-old car mechanic has been trying to build on a plot of land he owns at the edge of the Palestinian village of Issawiya In 1985 he built a house that was demolished In 1995 he tried to build his own garage but it too was demolished In 2000 he began building a wedding hall but the Israeli authorities destroyed it upon its completion in 2008 In 2014 he decided to build two apartments for his older sons they too were torn down Hamdan served over two years in prison for driving without a license it was revoked because he had not paid all his building fines Now he is living in the middle of the crowded old part of the village Most recently Hamdan built a carwash on his property for his son to work at and a small stable for his youngest son’s horse In early November the car wash and the horse stable were demolished and even the water tank for the horse’s water was toppled over so they wouldn’t be able to use it Meanwhile according to the Jerusalem municipality’s website on September 11 the local Planning and Building Committee chaired by Deputy Mayor Eliezer Rauchenberger approved plans to renovate the French Hill commercial center which is about a 15-minute drive from Hamdan’s plot The Commercial Center Renovation Plan would replace the old commercial center with a mixed-use complex to include a large urban plaza new public buildings and the construction of five buildings — two 12-story buildings two 18-story buildings and one eight-story building with the upper floors to include 213 new residential units From where he stands near the toppled water tank Hamdan gazes up at the multi-family cottages of French Hill They creep down the hillside toward what was once the agricultural land of Issawiya “What can I do Eat my heart out I will have a heart attack” said the father of six who now owes the municipality over NIS 1 million for building fines One of his sons is an architect and the other is studying to be an engineer “I just want to know why it is forbidden to build here I have to give my children apartments I don’t have the space in my house for everyone to live when they get married” He has a packet of documents he shuffles through attesting to his fines payments land ownership building plans adjustments to the building plans and court cases There is even a court order to put the demolition order on hold But nothing makes sense to him “I suffer because of this situation But it is important to stay here on this land” said Hamdan ‘I will give her back her dream’ At the other end of East Jerusalem in the Wadi Yasul neighborhood Quosiy Burqan walks by the debris of what had been his home The headboard of a bed juts out from under the broken cement Both his and his brother’s homes were demolished seven months ago Close to 500 people live in Wadi Yasul adjacent to a forest that was expropriated from its Palestinian owners in 1970 This forested area and the land where the Wadi Yasul neighborhood was established was zoned by the Jerusalem municipality as a green area in 1977 But Burqan’s father built the two homes in Wadi Yasul some 30 years ago “This land belongs to my father My children were born here I lived here when I was single We tried all the ways we could to get building permission” said Burqan one of 12 siblings When the police came that early morning in March this year to demolish the house his children were still in bed Neighbors stalled the police so he and his wife had enough time to quickly bundle up the children and take them to nearby Abu Tor where their grandparents live so they would not have to see their homes being demolished They were able to rescue very little from the homes he said adding: “The hardest thing was seeing my parents cry” In 2004 the residents of Wadi Yasul submitted a plan which they had paid for out of their own pockets to the District Planning and Building Committee for retroactive authorization of their homes but their request was rejected in 2008 on the grounds that the area was zoned to remain a green space There are now court-ordered demolitions for all the homes in Wadi Yasul though families have appealed the decision both with the District Court and the Supreme Court seeking an interim injunction on carrying out the orders All of the homes are still under threat of demolition and all residents were issued tens of thousands of shekels in fines “You know what is funny The city is still sending me bills for the arnona property tax even after they demolished my house I was paying arnona” said Burqan He was also fined NIS 74000 for the demolition of his house and another NIS 4000 for pitching a tent when neighbors came to pay solidarity visits “I will be paying fines till the day I die The minute I finish with one fine they give me another” Burqan continued “If you are an Arab there isn’t any permission for you if you are a settler you get everything all the doors are opened before you We don’t have any power All the power is in the hand of Israel But I won’t go to jail for November 27th 2019 Jesus Christ ✝ Last winter I went to the mikveh — the Jewish ritual bath — for the first time as a form of protest Having been raised interfaith I was looking for an opportunity to revive my family’s lost traditions while also rooting myself in my Judaism in the face of rising anti-Semitism and white nationalism At the same time I was searching for a sense of moral clarity to navigate tumultuous communal politics while honoring my ancestors who were forced to leave their homes because of the same dangers Jews are facing today Instead of suppressing my identity as a Jew I wanted to amplify it So I studied with my rabbi for a year asking questions about my place within my own heritage as well as finding strength in solidarity amongst my people However there was one question I feared asking: As a Jew how do I reckon with the occupation I needed an answer to this question before I could go to the mikveh When I finally felt brave enough to ask the rabbis in my beit din I feared that my Judaism and my personal values would be permanently divorced — that I would be condemned for not explicitly supporting a country I’d been taught was a safe haven for Jews But if I wanted to confront white nationalism through my Judaism I knew I needed to confront the right-wing ideology and violence in Israel as well Thankfully the rabbis before me were vocal activists for Palestinian rights Yet I found myself with a whole new set of moral questions Now that I’d made a concrete commitment to Judaism was I expected to do the same for Israel How could my people who suffered countless atrocities commit acts of violence against Palestinians Furthermore how could I advocate for progressive values in the United States without advocating for the same humanity from the Israeli government These questions are polarizing and endangering the American Jewish community Yet they are too rarely voiced suppressed by American Jewish establishment groups like AIPAC who propagate the harmful idea that to be Jewish is to support Israel This same message has been co-opted by white nationalists who hide their anti-Semitic rhetoric and violence behind unconditional support for the Israeli government Equally the US’s near-uncontested military aid to Israel is often talked about as a defense against rising anti-Semitism when in reality it serves to deflect our leaders’ focus from the real and dangerous threat white nationalism poses to our people These issues are at the heart of a new platform released last week by IfNotNow which focuses in parallel on the most urgent crises facing our community today: rising anti-Semitism and white nationalism and the Israeli government’s military occupation over the Palestinian people By taking a bold stance on the new president says Cohen has to contend with far-right paramilitary leaders who view any peace deal negotiated with Russia as treasonous Zelensky has been subjected to death threats As Cohen points out if the US was genuinely concerned about establishing peace and democracy in Ukraine then Washington should be fully supporting Zelensky’s overtures to Moscow to let him and the Ukrainian people know “we got your back” But as it is Zelensky is going into negotiations with Putin as an isolated figure who has been demeaned by Washington’s squabbling and caricatured as a stooge Thus what investigations was creating a “strategy to fight and win” – in the long term not the short term Convicting Clinton was never the goal the goal was to kick the DNC out of the White House People mocked McCarthy and the GOP establishment after the Benghazi hearings and again when he admitted the real reason behind those investigations But they stopped mocking him after Donald Trump assumed office run by Democrats who are completely dominated by Trump Derangement Syndrome But President Trump won’t be removed from office because the Senate is Republican That’s why so much of the testimony so far even referred to himself as the Chosen One claiming after the inevitable backlash that the comment was meant in jest These comments have all – understandably – been ridiculed as delusional hero-worship and held up as examples of how out of touch the president’s supporters are But there’s a much more vocal strain of criticism that depicts Trump as – if not the devil – certainly its earthly incarnation an embodiment of evil never before seen in the White House This line of commentary is just as ridiculous but more dangerous for how seriously it’s taken among those who pass then-president George W Bush was criticized for using the term “evil” to refer to the 9/11 terror attacks Hitler was BETTER than Trump ex-Reagan amp Bush official hints in a tweet Before the Bad Orange Man was even inaugurated comparisons of candidate Trump to Hitler were ubiquitous issuing forth from “respected” voices on the Left and Right or as far as one can get toward Left or Right while still enjoying television airtime Three years later the TrumpHitler equation is so ingrained in most pundits’ minds that merely comparing a person or action to Trump – equating say Bernie Sanders’ criticism of the Washington Post’s coverage of his campaign to Trump’s “fake news media is the enemy of the people” – has become an effective smear for shutting down discussion Rarely is there any pushback as sticking up for Trump – even by defending a person compared to him – has become as toxic as sticking up for Hitler in some circles With Trump semi-officially crowned Prince of Darkness commentators are left with nowhere to go when they want to emphasize a level of evil above baseline Trump leading to rhetorical gymnastics that might in a saner era be deemed hysteria Former Duke University psychiatry chair Allen Frances declared earlier this year that Trump would be responsible for “many millions more deaths” than Hitler Stalin and Mao While Frances’ statement raised a few eyebrows it went unchallenged by host Brian Stelter of CNN – Orange Man Bad central – who more recently brought on cult expert Steve Hassan to warn viewers that Trump was using “mind control” to influence his supporters Celebrities – perhaps the least impacted of all Americans by Trump’s screw-the-poor economic policies – are on the front lines comparing him to a whole host of baddies and showing their ignorance of history in the bargain Their disconnected doomsaying culminated two months ago in actress Debra Messing proposing a blacklist of sorts to excommunicate Trump supporters from policies contained in the document particularly in relation to public ownership and lowering the cost of living and one can understand why activists are so enthusiastic about it Unfortunately though Labour’s commitment to hold a second Brexit referendum with Remain as one of the two options means that the likeliest outcome is that the election campaign will end not in hope but in despair for supporters of Jeremy Corbyn Also on rtcom Labour’s Corbyn confirms he’ll ‘stay neutral as PM’ when/if he orders 2nd Brexit referendum That’s because detailed academic research shows that the path to any Labour election victory lies through the party gaining pro-Leave Tory marginals in England and Wales – as well as holding on to pro-Leave seats it narrowly won in 2017 The key stat is that 78 percent of Labour’s 45 target seats in England and Wales voted Leave in 2016 many of them quite strongly “Winning these seats is a sine qua non for the formation of a Labour government If Labour cannot gain Conservative seats in England and Wales then it cannot govern even as a minority” says Dr Richard Johnson of Lancaster University Labour is banking that popular policies in their manifesto on bringing rail water and the Royal Mail back into public ownership maintaining free TV licenses for the over-75s and abolishing NHS hospital car parking charges will persuade enough Labour Leavers not to desert the party for the Tories or the Brexit Party – and also entice Tories to vote Labour However with under three weeks to go before the election and the party continuing to trail badly in the polls it looks as if Labour has greatly underestimated just how important implementing Brexit is in its traditional heartlands in the North and Midlands That miscalculation could be because Corbyn and many of the Shadow Cabinet have seats in London where pro-Remain sentiments perhaps give a misleading impression of what the rest of the country is thinking The cost to the party of shifting to a more pro-Remain position could be great come election night Whatever one’s views on the merits or demerits of Brexit it doesn’t seem quite right that Remain should be given another chance to win especially as Labour did promise to respect the result of the 2016 referendum It all smacks of ‘you didn’t vote the right way three years ago so please vote again’ something which Jeremy Corbyn himself criticised when it applied to Ireland and ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009 Also on rtcom Unearthed VIDEO of Corbyn trashing EU for treatment of Ireland seized upon by his Brexit critics Labour’s ‘vote again’ policy could be described as the worst of both worlds It alienates Leavers but arguably doesn’t enthuse hardcore Remainers either who would just like Article 50 to be swiftly revoked Furthermore there is the issue of how continued EU membership would make other policies in the Labour manifesto difficult or impossible to implement For instance the policy of nationalising Openreach a subsidiary of British Telecom and then providing free full-fibre- broadband through the company to every household in the country could fall foul of EU rules on state aid The basic flaw – and contradiction – in the Labour manifesto is this: the party makes a big thing of wanting to move towards a different economic model ‘Time for Real Change’ yet its referendum policy which would put ‘Remain’ against a soft Brexit deal which would be unlikely to get strong Leave support is clearly pro status-quo geared as it is to ensuring that Britain stays in the privatisation-driving neoliberal EU I’ve talked to a number of people who have said they‘re not going to vote Labour because they feel betrayed over Brexit – and labeling such voters as ‘scabs’ or ‘traitors’ as some have done – is certainly not going to help persuade them to return to the Labour fold on December 12 And make no mistake Labour needs them to return to the fold to have any chance of winning How different things might have been had Labour announced in October that they were going to support Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal with suitable guarantees given over state aid and workers’ rights If Labour had helped Johnson’s deal to get passed then they would have gone into the subsequent general election in a much stronger position Brexit would have been put to bed and the focus on the campaign would have been on those issues where the party clearly has the most popular policies such as renationalising the railways and utilities and protecting pensioner benefits Also on rtcom ‘Don’t give up!’ Tusk urges Brits to keep fighting to stop Brexit otherwise it’s the ‘end of the British Empire’ As it is the election is being fought on Brexit where Boris Johnson’s simple message of ‘Let’s just get the bally thing done’ resonates more than Corbyn’s ‘We’re going to have a second referendum and I’m going to stay neutral’ Labour don’t seem to have realised just how sick and tired people are of the whole wretched saga With still seventeen days to polling day all is not yet lost for Labour but it’s no use pretending that the party hasn’t gone into the current election with a major handicap To use a horse racing analogy the Tories have been given a ten lengths start and a stone and a half weight concession because of their clearer stance on Brexit Labour could still make up the lost distance but one fears that the result of this particular race was already decided when the party opted to support a second referendum and because of that everything else
