Over half a million tiny hermit crabs have been trapped and killed by Lost count Israel killed 43 Palestinians in November Relatives of Arkan Mizhar a Palestinian who was killed by Israeli soldiers during a raid At least 26 people killed by landslides caused by heavy rain in Burundi At least 26 people have died and more are missing after heavy rain triggered landslides Hits: 10 “White Man’s Burden”: The US Has Been Fighting “Forever Wars” Against Muslims for 120 Years December 28th 2019 Jesus Christ ✝ TMU Op-Ed — US-led wars in the Middle East have killed some four million Muslims since 1990 The recently published Afghanistan papers provided an insight into the longest war in US history and revealed how US officials continuously lied about the progress being made in Afghanistan lacked a basic understanding of the country were hiding evidence that the war was unwinnable and had wasted as much as 1 trillion in the process Unfortunately this phenomenon is nothing new While most people accept that the United States has been interfering with Muslim populations quite heavily since World War II the truth is that the US has been fighting “forever wars” against Muslim populations for well over 100 years If you want to really go back into history Thomas Jefferson was also fighting Muslims in the oft-forgotten Barbary Wars in the early 1800s The average American school curriculum likely doesn’t feature the fact that the US waged a war from 1899 to 1913 in the southernmost island of the Philippines Known as the Moro War it was the longest sustained military campaign in American history until the war in Afghanistan surpassed it a few years ago As a result the US and the Philippine governments are still embroiled in a battle with Islamist insurgents in the southern Philippines which takes the meaning of “forever war” to a whole new level Despite over a century passing since the US led a counterinsurgency war against the Islamic Moros its similarities with the Afghanistan war are incredibly noteworthy to say the least Even reading accounts of the terrain in which both conflicts were fought suggest they were equally as treacherous As detailed in the memoir of Captain John Pershing fighting the Moro Wars “entailed guerrilla warfare in a country unknown to us with its swamps and rivers and its hills and mountains every foot of which was familiar to the inhabitants and their insurrecto troops” While the US often boasts about fighting for freedom many Americans may be wondering how it is that their freedom came to be located in the Philippines in the first place Was it worth sending 75000 American troops in just 1900 alone to the Philippines to fight and die And was the operation even remotely successful More importantly seems to be the indication that the US military was not welcome in the Philippines much as it is not welcomed by Afghanistan or any other Muslim-majority nation which has to duel with the US Empire After the US defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay and annexed the Philippines under the 1898 Treaty of Paris the Moro population were not even consulted The US then sought to “pacify” them using brute force “I want no prisoners” ordered General Jacob Smith on Samar Island during the war in 1902 “I wish you to kill and burn the more you kill and burn the better you will please me” Fast forward over 100 years later and it is difficult to see how US military doctrine has changed for the better A video came to light in 2010 of then-General James Mattis saying that it was “a hell of a lot of fun to shoot” people in Afghanistan Mattis was later rewarded for his heroism and bravery by being crowned Donald Trump’s secretary of defense for a short while As you can imagine General Smith received his wish just as Mattis after him with perhaps half a million locals dying as a result of the US invasion At Bud Dajo some 1000 Moro separatists including their families had fled to the crest of a volcano to escape the American invasion Allegedly American troops reached the top of the volcano and fired down into the crater until they killed 99 percent of the inhabitants The colonizers then took the time and effort to pose for a photograph with the hundreds of dead bodies no seriously It is also worth noting that some 4000 US soldiers lost their lives during this particular war This closely mirrors the number of coalition deaths since 2001 in Afghanistan—and for good reason To minimize US personnel deaths in the Philippines’ war the US military deployed Filipinos led by US officers into battle Sound familiar At one stage Filipinos ended up doing almost all of the dying as US soldiers slowly left the battle theatre In fact the final year of conflict was the bloodiest year of the Moro war This seems to be the trend in a number of US wars This is certainly true with respect to Afghanistan with the US military and its Afghan lackeys on the ground killing more civilians than the Taliban in recent times But what is all this senseless violence for To put it simply whether in the Philippines Iraq Afghanistan or elsewhere this rampage is all borne out of the belief that America’s subordinates are not capable of ruling themselves and will ultimately profit from American occupation This was actually the firm thinking of US President Theodore Roosevelt who saw it as the duty of the United States to maintain the Philippines as a protectorate This idea was famously or infamously termed the “White Man’s Burden” in a poem written by Rudyard Kipling who sent the poem to Teddy prior to his decision to engage in the Philippine-American war A 1902 Life Magazine cover even depicted an apparent waterboarding of a Filipino POW by US personnel the supporters in the background seem to be watching with glee When not much has changed it seems it never will We can also expect this type of activity to continue for the foreseeable future given the geopolitical stakes at hand In the case of the Philippines it was recently reported that Chinese and Philippine foreign ministers have sealed an agreement for the two nations to pursue joint oil and gas exploration in the hotly contested South China Sea As it turns out the South China Sea could contain anywhere between 125 billion barrels of crude oil and 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas The idea that a foreign adversary especially one rising to prowess on the world stage such as China could control the majority of these resources unchecked is a major blow to the US Empire Whether it is lithium opium and geostrategic chess moves in Afghanistan or natural gas and oil in the South China Sea Muslim populations will continue to suffer in a colonial terror campaign which has been unfolding for over 100 years Think of it this way: if another century passes and your great grandchildren had never heard of the “forever war” that took place in Afghanistan in the early 2000s all the while watching a new war unfold in the Indo-Pacific region for similar reasons you would rightfully be fuming in your grave Source Article from Related Posts Oprah-Endorsed Spiritual ‘Healer’ Gets 19 Years in Prison for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s crushing defeat of challenger Gideon Sa’ar in a Likud leadership race drew predictably divided responses from Israeli politicians on the right and left Friday as the left politicians expressed disappointment with the results chiding Likud for sticking by a leader facing corruption charges and predicting the result would lead to continued political deadlock Netanyahu failed to form a government following elections in April and September leading to the unprecedented upcoming third poll Public surveys have predicted the new election will bring similar results to the previous too and may even see Likud do worse “The results show Likud is disconnected from the nation” said Labor Party head Amir Peretz “The popular and dignified movement that was once coming out forcefully against immunity for Netanyahu in his criminal cases leading to hopes by some in Likud that he could be convinced to join their bloc Thursday’s leadership contest was the first significant challenge to Netanyahu’s leadership of the Likud in more than a decade but he maintained the support of the vast majority of the party’s Knesset members and its prominent local leaders and activists and can thus utilize the result as a boost ahead of Israel’s third general elections in under a year He hailed the win as a “huge victory” as results came in early Friday Sa’ar later conceded defeat and pledged support for Netanyahu and Likud ahead of the March 2 vote “The contest was vital to the Likud and its democratic character” he said Sa’ar had argued that Netanyahu having failed twice to form a government after the April and September elections would lead the right-wing bloc to a third failure and that he by contrast would ensure the right retained power A series of polls in recent weeks have indicated a Sa’ar-led Likud would win fewer seats in a third election than under Netanyahu but the overall right-wing bloc might be larger — potentially enabling it to break election-filled period those around Netanyahu telegraphed real panic throughout the day Briefings given by those around him talked about low turnout numbers which won’t surpass 40 percent That’s despite the fact that in comparison to past primaries the turnout percentage was reasonable” Yedioth reports A twitter account belonging to a user named “Freddie the bear” jokes “Worry in the big tonight and they turn around and say he cannot be prime minister then although they’ve done their job which is to make the right legal decision that they will be in political turmoil that could rip the elections apart” Hazan is quoted saying before the primary results were announced And on January 2 Netanyahu will have to say whether or not he wants immunity Likud’s Miki Zohar is quoted in Israel Hayom as saying that the results “provide an answer on whether he should seek immunity” Speaking to Radio 103 Netanyahu backer David Bitan says that if Sa’ar or any of his cronies dare object to Netanyahu asking for immunity “they are done in the Likud” Haaretz’s Yossi Verter writes that Netanyahu wanted to make sure to have the primary before his likely immunity request but it’s a lose-lose situation anyway He can drop the matter and be whisked into court or make the request show himself to be a liar and break yet more precedents “ A candidate for prime minister who is under indictment and requests immunity for himself is something we’ve never had in these parts It’s hard to see how he with all his sophisticated campaigning abilities can make this situation work in his favor” he writes 6 The right stuff: Verter also notes that Netanyahu doesn’t really have any more voters to rely on in the March election as those who left Likud in disgust over his indictments aren’t about to come flocking back But Zman Yisrael’s Shalom Yerushalmi writes that Netanyahu can still look to the rest of the right for support: “Netanyahu mission is get another 300000 right-wing voters his partner real estate broker Terry Marler The creator of 10 Broadway shows and contributor to several more Herman won two Tony Awards for best musical: “Hello Dolly!” in 1964 and “La Cage aux a few of his song titles revealed his depth of hope: “I’ll Be Here Tomorrow” “The Best of Times” “Tap Your Troubles Away” “It’s Today” “We Need a Little Christmas” and “Before the Parade Passes By” Even the title song to “Hello Dolly!” is an advertisement to enjoy life Herman also had a direct simple sense of melody and his lyrics had a natural unforced quality Over the years he told the AP in 1995 “critics have sort of tossed me off as the popular and not the cerebral writer and that was fine with me That was exactly what I aimed at” In accepting the Tony in 1984 for “La Cage Aux Folles” Herman said “This award forever shatters a myth about the musical theater There’s been a rumor around for a couple of years that the simple hummable show tune was no longer welcome on Broadway Well it’s alive and well at the Palace” Theatre Some saw that phrase — “the simple hummable show tune” — as a subtle dig at Stephen Sondheim known for challenging and complex songs and whose “Sunday in the Park with George” Herman had just bested But Herman rejected any tension between the two musical theater giants “Only a small group of ‘showbiz gossips’ have constantly tried to create a feud between Mr Sondheim and myself I am as much of a Sondheim fan as you and everybody else in the world and I believe that my comments upon winning the Tony for ‘La Cage’ clearly came from my delight with the show business community’s endorsement of the simple melodic showtune which had been criticized by a few hard-nosed critics as being old fashioned” he said in a 2004 QampA session with readers of Broadwaycom Herman was born in 1931 in New York to Jewish parents who ran a children’s summer camp in the Catskills and raised in Jersey City He spent all of his summers in the Borscht Belt from age six to 23 and it was there that he taught himself piano He noted that when he was born his mother had a view of Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre marquee from her hospital bed Herman dated his intention to write musicals to the time his parents took him to “Annie Get Your Gun” and he went home and played five of Irving Berlin’s songs on the piano “I thought what a gift this man has given a stranger I wanted to give that gift to other people That was my great inspiration that night” he told The Associated Press in 1996 After graduating from the University of Miami Herman headed back to New York writing and playing piano in a jazz club He made his Broadway debut in 1960 contributing songs to the review “From A to Z” — alongside material by Fred Ebb and Woody Allen — and the next year tackled the entire score to a musical about the founding of the state of Israel “Milk and Honey” It earned him his first Tony nomination “Hello Dolly!” starring Carol Channing opened in 1964 and ran for 2844 performances becoming Broadway’s longest-running musical at the time It won 10 Tonys and has been revived many times most recently in 2017 with Bette Midler in the title role a 19th-century widowed matchmaker who learns to live again “Mame” followed in 1966 starring Angela Lansbury and went on to run for over 1500 performances She handed him his Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2009 saying he created songs like him: “bouncy buoyant and optimistic” In 1983 he had another hit with “La Cage aux Folles” a sweetly radical musical of its age decades before the fight for marriage equality It was a lavish adaptation of the successful French film about two gay men who own a splashy drag nightclub on the Riviera It contained the gay anthem “I Am What I Am” and ran for some 1760 performances Three of his shows “Dear World” “The Grand Tour” and “Mack and Mabel” failed on Broadway Many of his songs have outlasted their vehicles: British ice skaters Torvill and Dean used the overture from “Mack and Mabel” to accompany a gold medal-winning routine in 1982 Writer-director Andrew Stanton used the Herman tunes “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” and “It Only Takes a Moment” to express the psyche of a love-starved trash-compacting robot in the film “WALL-E” Later in life Herman composed a song for “Barney’s Great Adventure” contributed the score for the 1996 made-for-TV movie “Mrs Santa Claus” — earning Herman an Emmy nomination — and wrote his autobiography “Showtune” published by Donald I Fine He is survived by his partner Marler and his goddaughters — Prime Minister Ariel Sharon removed 9000 settlers from the Gaza Strip Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party did not win the most votes but he was the only politician able to cobble together a coalition Just a few months before the elections Netanyahu launched his campaign in an area known as E-1 strategically located between the settlement of Ma’ale Adumim and East Jerusalem Speaking to a group of journalists on the day of the launch Netanyahu said: “We want to establish contiguity between larger Jerusalem from the west to the east the Palestinians want to build contiguously from the south to the north and one will defeat the other” Several months after the 2009 elections Netanyahu delivered what became known as the “Bar Ilan Speech” in which he said that “the territorial question will be discussed as part of the final peace agreement In the meantime we have no intention of building new settlements or of expropriating additional land for existing settlements But there is a need to enable the residents to live normal lives to allow mothers and fathers to raise their children like families elsewhere” Over a decade has passed and the rhetoric Netanyahu uses today can be summarized in a statement he delivered a week before the second elections of 2019: “Today I announce my intention with the formation of the next government to establish Israeli sovereignty on the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea settlements” Ten years is a long enough time to “look back with a certain fear” as Israeli journalist Amos Elon once put it and take stock of what has — and hasn’t — happened over the years First and foremost the distinction between the Land of Israel and the State of Israel has never been more enigmatic for the majority of the Israeli public Here’s a short story to illustrate: on the first day of the school year my daughter’s class she goes to a relatively liberal and secular high school in Jerusalem was invited to take part in a day working on a date plantation in one of the West Bank settlements in the Jericho region The principal who as far as I know leans left did not see any problem with this The same went for the other teachers and parents apart for one The students raised in the Israeli education system don’t have the basic tools to understand the political context in which they live Does this mean the settler right has won Can the settler right — whose political doctrine rests on the idea of Greater Israel and complete legal and political segregation between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank — win Can the reality in the West Bank which is a combination of military occupation and civil apartheid last in the long run Ten years ago my answer to these questions was undoubtedly “no” I was convinced that maintaining such a status quo in the long run was impossible Today after a decade of Netanyahu and three years of Trump we live in a reality in which the term “impossible” sounds as anachronistic as the words “peace process” If there is one thing the last 10 years has done to us — all of us — it has been to entrench the current reality in our consciousness and fundamentally undermine our confidence as to the boundaries of the possible Reality out in the open “And does any one of you raise the possibility that a Jewish settlement will live at the bottom of a hill while armed Palestinians sit above…” MK Ariel Sharon October 18 1999 Kufr ad-Dik is located six miles west of the town of Salfit on the western slopes of the West Bank In 2007 the last time a census was held in the West Bank the village’s population was approximately 4500 people No less than 1000 settlement units of the total 20000 that have been built over the last decade in the occupied territories can be found in the settlements of Alei Zahav and Paduel both of which were built in the first half of the 1980s on land belonging to Kafr ad-Dik The massive building in these settlements began immediately with the end of the fictitious 10-month “freeze” on settlement construction that began at the end of November 2009 At the time I published an article in Haaretz that ended with the following words: Benjamin Netanyahu will probably not win the Nobel Peace Prize but he is certainly likely to win the Nobel Prize for physics or at least chemistry in the name of the Israeli government which discovered that — contrary to what scientists had thought until now — water is not the only substance that expands rather than contracts when it freezes Aerial photos of Paduel and Alei Zahav from the last decade show precisely how a significant part of the open space that was at the disposal of the residents of Kafr ad-Dik for generations was gradually stolen for the purpose of building bourgeoise settlement suburbs A similar process took place in dozens of settlements located along the western strip of the West Bank These include Eshkolot and Sansana in the south Nili Na’ale Barkan and Salit in the central region of the West Bank and Shaked and Reihan in the north The vast majority of the residents there are secular and over the years these settlements have undergone an accelerated process of growth and suburbanization The last decade has also been especially generous to ultra-Orthodox settlers which are in fact the locomotive of accelerated demographic growth among the entire settler population Over a third of settlers today are Haredi and the annual growth rate in Modi’in Illit Beitar Illit Agan HaAyalot Tel Zion and Immanuel stands at between four to eight percent — significantly higher than that of the general settler population 35 percent and that of the Israeli population 19 percent This was after all a decade in which real estate prices drastically increased the pressures of the real estate market and particularly that of the ultra-Orthodox flowed into the settlements Construction also took place in the national-religious settlements home to the ideological core of the movement and located in the heart of the West Bank Over the last 10 years between dozens and hundreds of new homes were built in Susya Otniel Karmei Tzur Efrat Geva Binyamin Ofra Beit El Eli Tapuach and Itamar This took place concurrently with the building frenzy in the outposts around the settlements dozens of which are now in various stages of becoming formalized settlements When it comes to outposts one cannot help but give credit to Ehud Barak The former prime minister may have become part of the opposition in the last two years but between 2009-2013 he served as defense minister under Netanyahu It was Barak who approved a military order that created a legal and planning platform through which 25 new outposts — most of them sheep or cattle farms — were established This was the most significant move that has taken place over the last few years vis-à-vis the takeover of open spaces in the West Bank This has been particularly felt in the “Gav Hahar” region where the hyper-ideological settlements of Itamar Elon Moreh Har Bracha and Yitzhar are located and where Palestinian shepherd communities dependent on access to these open areas have lived for generations The residents of these outposts which were built with utmost precision in order to become formalized in the future are involved in the most violent form of dispossession and expulsion One can cautiously assume that they have managed to minimize or entirely prevent access by Palestinian shepherds The settlers of the shepherd outposts are not the only ones to have taken land from the open areas of the West Bank They have been joined by motorcycle enthusiasts visitors to natural springs and others who over the past decade helped turn large parts of the West Bank into an amusement park for the Israeli middle class which has enough money and time to entertain itself Looking back however it turns out the Israelis love bathing in West Bank springs and plowing through its terrain with jeeps and motorbikes much more than they actually love living there The number of settlers over the last decade grew from 270000 to 440000 80 percent natural growth yet they still only make up 45 percent of the Israeli population and 14 percent of the entire population of the West Bank The settlement enterprise found greater success in agricultural takeover — a process that requires large budgets violence and deceptive lawyers to represent criminal settlers in the courts Over the last 10 years settlers began working nearly 4000 acres of land a third of which is recognized by the Civil Administration — the IDF body that runs the day-to-day life of the Palestinian population in the occupied territories — as private Palestinian land The majority of that land is located near the Gav Hahar settlements and is used to grow olives and grapes for wine production Another 60 percent of the land that was added 2300 acres in the last decade turned into date plantations in the occupied Jordan Valley The rapid increase in the area of date plantations was enabled by the completion of the sewage treatment plant in Nabi Musa in 2014 which streams tens of thousands of liters daily to irrigate date plantations around the Jordan Valley the northern Dead Sea settlements and in Military Zone 151 located between the Jordan River and the border fence The intensive activities of the settlement enterprise over the last 10 years is inversely correlated to the efforts Israel has invested in completing the separation barrier since 2010 the work on the barrier included making minor alterations including by changing its route in places like Bil’in and Jayous This fact reflects a shift away from the once-dominant paradigm of unilaterally evacuating Israeli settlements beyond the separation barrier which — despite all the denials and the lies — was planned as a means of forming a demographic barrier between Israel and the Palestinians Instead we have seen a return of the old paradigm of direct Israeli control through army and settler presence across the West Bank The reality Israelis don’t see “The essential things in life are seen not with the eyes” – The Little Prince Antoine de Saint-Exupéry In addition to the visible changes the past decade has seen changes among the two populations embroiled in the conflict In the West Bank we have seen a new generation of Palestinians that has never crossed the Green Line Most of them do not speak Hebrew or know Israelis They hate the Palestinian Authority which they view as corrupt and collaborationist They do not know the reality in the Gaza Strip and have not experienced or do not remember the scars of the Second Intifada I have a hard time imagining a scenario in which all these characteristics are not translated into actions that the Israeli public does not take kindly to I’ve witnessed this shift firsthand in my encounters with young Palestinians whenever they ask if I can help them obtain work permits in Israel I used to understand this as a matter of individual urgency which overrides the interest of the wider Palestinian public Today I wonder whether it expresses a transformation of the Palestinian concept of sumud or steadfastness in the face of Israeli dispossession Either way it indubitably expresses the delicate balancing act and the interdependence that exists between the occupiers and the occupied One can hardly imagine a political constellation that will bring about the end of 52 years of occupation and settlements On the one hand the current political reality creates meeting points and joint interests between Palestinians and settlers while on the other hand it deepens the dead end that the conflict finds itself in This is the bedrock upon which the murderous and pro-transfer rhetoric we see online and in the Israeli media grows The villages of Khan al-Ahmar and Susya may not have been evacuated due to the fear of a severe response from a number of Western countries but smaller-scale expulsion attempts continue endlessly far and away from the collective Israeli consciousness According to the UN Israel demolished 6000 structures in the West Bank over the last decade leading to the displacement of 9000 Palestinians All people struggle to continue living in a situation of uncertainty and I am often asked about what I think will happen here The trivial response is that no one knows In the meantime it is worthwhile to reflect on the fact that close to five million Palestinians now live in East Jerusalem the West Bank and the Gaza Strip under various types of Israeli occupation Approximately one million more Palestinians lived in those same areas a decade ago The vast majority of them and many others will also be here at the end of the next decade lt!– Get Our Weekly Newsletter Sign up –gt economic changes are needed December 28th 2019 Jesus Christ ✝ Pia Klemp captain of the Luventa the ship saving refugees in the Mediterranean concluded her explanation of why she decided to refuse the Grand Vermeil medal awarded to her by the city of Paris with a crowd-pleasing slogan: “Documents and housing for all! Freedom of movement and residence!” If she means that – to cut a long story short – every individual has the right to move to a country of his/her choice and that this country has a duty to provide him/her with a residence then we are dealing here with an abstract vision in the strict Hegelian sense: a vision which ignores the complex context of social totality The problem cannot be solved at this level the only true solution is to change the system which produces immigrants The task then is to take a step back from direct criticism to an analysis of the imminent antagonisms of the worldwide situation with a focus on how our critical position itself participates in the phenomenon it criticizes In a recent TV debate Gregor Gysi a key figure in the German Die Linke The Left party gave a good answer to an anti-immigrant who aggressively insisted that he feels no responsibility for the poverty and horrors in Third World countries and that instead of spending money to help them European states should only be responsible for the welfare of their own citizens The gist of Gysi’s answer was: if we don’t get responsible for the Third World poor and act accordingly they will come here to us…precisely what the anti-immigrant is so ferociously opposed to Also on rtcom Greens’ leader takes heat as he wants Germany to take 4000 migrant children stuck in Greece Cynical and unethical as this reply may appear it is much more appropriate than abstract humanitarianism The humanitarian approach appeals to our generosity and guilt “we should open our hearts to them also because the ultimate cause of their suffering is European racism and colonization” This appeal is often combined with a strange economic reasoning that Europe needs immigrants in order to continue to expand economically that its birth rates are falling and it is losing vitality It is strange to hear the Leftists invoke the typical Rightist motif of vitality The hidden stakes of this approach are clear: let’s open ourselves to immigrants as a desperate measure to avoid much-needed radical change and to maintain our liberal-capitalist order The logic that sustains the quoted Gysi statement is the opposite one: only a radical socio-economic change can really protect our identity our way of life Caught in a social limbo A symptom of this type of ‘Global Leftist’ is how they simultaneously reject any talk of “our way of life” and of cultural differences as a reactionary Huntington-like stance masking the fundamental identity or rather leveling of all of us in global capitalism and demand of us a respect for the immigrants’ specific cultural identity ie not to impose on them our standards The obvious counter-reproach that our way and their way of life are not symmetrical since our ‘way’ is hegemonic makes a valid point but avoids the core of the problem – the status of universality in the struggle for emancipation It is true that in some sense the refugee is a ‘neighbor’ par excellence the neighbor in the strict biblical sense the Other reduced to its naked presence Without possessions without a home without a determined place in society refugees are like a stain on the social edifice always too close to us Since they lack a stable place in our society they stand for the universality of being-human – how we relate to them indicates how we relate to humanity as such They are not just different from us – we are all different from other groups – they are in one sense Difference itself as such But in a properly Hegelian way universality and particularity coincide here: refugees come naked only materially and it’s for this reason that they cling all the more to their cultural identity They are perceived as universal rootless but at the same time as stuck in their particular identity From this fact alone it is clear why nomadic immigrants are not proletarians – in spite of attempts by Alain Badiou and others to promulgate the refugee as the exemplary figure of today’s proletarians “nomadic proletarians” What makes proletarians proletarian is the fact that they are exploited: they are the key moment of the valorization of capital their labor creates surplus-value – in clear contrast to nomadic refugees who are not just perceived as worthless but are literally value-less worthless “trash”/leftovers of global capital Also on rtcom Triumph of the right in Sweden is a result of the total failure of liberalism Leftists and capitalists dream that the new wave of immigrants will be integrated into the capitalist machine as happened back in the 1960s in Germany and then France because “Europe needs immigrants” But this time it isn’t working immigrants cannot be integrated and the bulk of them remain outsiders This fact makes the situation with immigrants and refugees much more tragic – they are caught in a kind of social limbo a deadlock from which fundamentalism offers a false exit As with the circulation of global capital refugees are put in a position of being surplus-humanity a mirror image of surplus-value and no humanitarian help and openness can resolve this tension only a restructuring of the entire international edifice will do The usual Left-liberal retort to this is: “What about the ‘let’s work to fix the countries from which immigrants are coming in order to abolish their reasons for leaving their countries’ approach Is it not just a subtle excuse to prevent refugees coming to us” The answer to this is clear: in a strictly symmetrical way “opening our hearts” to refugees here is a not-so- subtle way of doing nothing to change the global situation that creates them… So the solution is simply: look at what they are doing – are they really doing it About us not them The falsity of humanitarianism is the same as that of the rejection of anthropocentrism advocated by deep ecology – there is deep hypocrisy in it What all the talk about how we humanity pose a threat to life on Earth and the life of the Earth really amounts to is our worry about our own fate Earth in itself is indifferent: even if we destroy life on it it will just be one of – not even the greatest of – many catastrophes that have befallen it When we worry about the environment we worry about our own environment we want our own good and safe life The falsity of this position is the same as the falsity of white anti-Eurocentric liberals who while ruthlessly rejecting their own cultural identity and soliciting others to assert this identity reserve for themselves the position of universality The proponents of deep ecology of the rights of animals plants and living habitats continue to act as universal beings as representatives of all beings – animals and plants have no awareness of others’ interests they just live and struggle for survival Also on rtcom Erdogan says Turkey can’t handle Syrian migrant influx warns Europe of new refugee wave The general lesson to be learned here is that one should avoid at any price cheap humanitarian sentimentalization of the world’s downtrodden For this reason alone Parasite Korea 2019 Bong Joon-ho is well-worth seeing Here is the film’s succinct storyline: “Jobless penniless and above all hopeless the unmotivated patriarch Ki-taek and his equally unambitious family – his supportive wife Chung-sook his cynical twenty-something daughter Ki-jung and his college-age son Ki-woo – occupy themselves by working for peanuts in their squalid basement-level apartment Then by sheer luck a lucrative business proposition will pave the way for an insidiously subtle scheme as Ki-woo summons up the courage to pose as an English tutor for the teenage daughter of the affluent Park family Now the stage seems set for an unceasing winner-take-all class war How does one get rid of a parasite” The film avoids any moralizing idealization of the underdogs in Frank Capra style: they are the parasites intruding manipulating exploitative And we should oppose here both content and form: at the level of content the upper-class Parks are without any doubt morally better they are considerate sympathetic helping while the underdogs effectively act like exploitative parasites However at the level of form the Parks are the privileged ones who can afford to be caring and helpful while the underdogs are real underdogs pushed by their situation into not very gracious acts So the solution is not to play humanitarian games but to change the situation that requires humanitarian games – or as Oscar Wilde put it in the opening lines of his “The Soul of Man Under Socialism”: “People find themselves surrounded by hideous poverty by hideous ugliness by hideous starvation It is inevitable that they should be strongly moved by all this Accordingly with admirable though misdirected intentions they very seriously and very sentimentally set themselves to the task of remedying the evils that they see But their remedies do not cure the disease: they merely prolong it” “Indeed their remedies are part of the disease They try to solve the problem of poverty for instance by keeping the poor alive or in the case of a very advanced school by amusing the poor But this is not a solution: it is an aggravation of the difficulty The proper aim is to try and reconstruct society on such a basis that poverty will be impossible And the altruistic virtues have really prevented the carrying out of this aim” he wrote READ MORE: Slavoj Žižek: Until the rich world thinks ‘one world’ migration will intensify Exactly the same holds for one with Pakistan as it seeks to bolster its weakening foothold December 28th 2019 Jesus Christ ✝ In 2018 US President Donald Trump signaled his decision blindsiding the State Department in a tweet squarely blaming Pakistan for failing to crackdown on terrorist groups in their country and providing “nothing but lies and deceit” That decision was rolled back by the end of the year – as Pakistan’s strengthening relations with Russia and China threatened to sideline American influence Also on rtcom ‘We’ve always been on receiving end of US hegemony’: Pakistan seeks closer ties with Russia and has a real chance of success Defense training as a policy instrument Defense training is a useful policy in the long term that helps to cultivate potential military leaders and influencers particularly in military dominated states such as Pakistan Trump’s decision to cut-off military training assistance for Pakistan appears to have raised concerns in the State Department over loss of influence in the country carefully cultivated through years of defense cooperation and training provided to a generation of military officers who trained at various defense establishments in the United States This move to resume the IMET is clearly an attempt to restore American strategic influence in Pakistan Significantly this comes at a time when the United States government is reviewing training for foreign personnel on American soil following a recent incident involving a Saudi Royal Air Force officer who opened fire in a classroom at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida killing three American sailors and wounding eight other people before being shot dead by police This factor could possibly weigh against the government’s decision when it comes up for a vote in Congress However the military establishment in the United States which has always tried to insulate military-to-military engagements from political tensions regards that long-term benefits of defense cooperation that could potentially build mutual trust outweigh short-term political risks Cutting into regional politics The resumption of defense training comes in the wake of the Prime Minister Imran Khans’ visit to Washington in July this year in an attempt to re-boot Pakistan’s relations with the US Pertinently Imran Khan was accompanied by the country’s top military leadership including the Chief of the Army and the Director General of the ISI Inter-Services Intelligence the premier national intelligence agency of Pakistan In recent years Pakistan-US strategic ties have declined significantly with the Trump administration pressuring Pakistan to crack down on terrorist groups within its borders that targeted US troops in Afghanistan At the same time the US elevated its relationship with India – which has always opposed US-Pakistan defense cooperation – to a strategic partnership Evidently Pakistan’s reacceptance into IMET is likely to upset India But for Washington the wish to have an avenue of influence on the Pakistani military appears stronger than concerns about India’s opinion – especially seeing as how snubbed by the United States the Pakistan military has sought to build closer ties with China and even Russia Another reason for a closer alliance with Pakistan could be to facilitate Trump’s promised withdrawal from Afghanistan where the US has lost over 2200 soldiers over the past 18 years and spends 45 billion per annum The Pakistan military could potentially play a crucial role in the ongoing negotiations involving the Taliban and the Afghan government Also on rtcom India amp China could find a 21st-century purpose for the aircraft carrier Military ties mean political influence The military has always played an instrumental role in Pakistan since its creation in 1947 with the country being ruled by military dictators on three occasions Even with a civilian government now in place the influence of the military is massive – and having it as an ally can be seen as a way for Washington to influence Pakistan politically Pakistan was a Cold War ally of the United States at a time when India refused to align with the Americans and several US presidents particularly Nixon were known to be enamored with the Pakistan military Significantly during the Cold War in 1971 Pakistan’s military dictator General Yahya Khan brokered the historic Sino-US rapprochement by facilitating Kissinger’s secret trip to China Over the years the United States government has advanced strategic ties with the Pakistan military establishment supported by close defense cooperation including arms sales and training for officers many of who have since reached senior and influential positions in the government Thus the resumption of the IMET is clearly a step towards preserving American strategic influence in Pakistan by promoting its military engagements in a country that has shown it is ready to turn elsewhere for allies Think your ironically in charge of gender equality and female empowerment tweet out a message detailing the disadvantages of motherhood as some sort of political point In a message of the kind usually sighted on the office feminist’s coffee mug in the communal kitchen the note lists the penalties of motherhood as if those women with children needed any reminding So there’s “more unpaid care and domestic work” which usually goes by the term of ‘parenting’ but hey it’s Christmas so we’ll accept the cracker-level joke Next on the list is “irregular work” then “reduced employment” see irregular work Again these are the compromises that millions of people around the world make in order to raise their children The choices are either don’t have kids which is a non-argument or pay for childcare which in most cases makes the whole point of working irrelevant as the money earned is simply paid out to the carer The essence of this argument is one of priorities which is up to the individual to decide not the welfare state or employers looking for a stable and reliable workforce And then we have further impositions “limited maternity benefits” arguable country-to-country and the juicy issues of “gender-based occupational segregation” and “gender pay gaps” Also on rtcom Harry Potter author JK Rowling gets burned by own fans as she steams into latest UK gender scandal on the wrong side Excuse of ‘higher rates of poverty in old age” well yes this is an issue but again highly variable among the nations of the world A single African mother with four children will have a hard time building a kept watching Then suddenly he raised his gun and pointed it at me I was about to flee but he was too fast He shot me in my eye” The bullet damaged her jaw as well Doctors had to extract her right eye since it was destroyed Her determination however is intact Abu Rwedeh continues to protest The youngest victim Mohammed Al-Najar 12 is the second-oldest son among four children supported by a father who works in a wedding hall in Khan Younis In January during the mid-year vacation from school Mohammed begged his parents to allow him to watch the Friday protest with his cousins and other relatives thinking it would give him an exciting story to share with classmates He was given permission to ride one of the government buses that collected people from the various neighbourhoods taking them to the protest sites When he disembarked teargas bombs were flying and he shouted to warn those around him Then next one hit him directly in his right eye When Mohammad learned later that his eye could not be saved he locked himself in his room and stopped going to school When he did go back he struggled “At first his marks at school dropped and he isolated himself He tried to hide his missing eye” says his mother Um Edress She took to him an organisation that provided psychotherapy but he refused to speak Today he is socialising but goes quiet when asked about his injury When Mohammad learned later that his eye could not be saved he locked himself in his room and stopped going to school Getty The journalist According to Dr Alqedra most people with eye injuries from the Great Return March are journalists or photographers One of them is Sami Musran 35 a photographer who works for Al-Aqsa TV On July 19 he was shot several times – first in his hand the next two times in his shoulders and the fourth time in the chest Fortunately he was wearing a bulletproof vest so it did not harm him The last time cost him his left eye Sami says he had received several calls from Israeli officers warning him not to take photos at the Great Return March His mother also received calls saying her son might be killed “Forty times my Facebook account was hacked or deleted for me and I received death threats as well” he says “But I decided to keep on with my work to reveal the Israeli crimes against unarmed Palestinians who participate in the march” The night before Musran was shot his wife tried to insist he stay home but he refused “Minutes before I was hit my mother called me twice saying she was very worried about me But I said that nothing happens that isn’t God’s plan” he recalls He was about 250 metres away from of the Israeli fence when two women and a child were shot Musran was taking photos of them and went in close That’s when a rubber-coated bullet hit his eye and he lost consciousness Two days later he woke up in the intensive care unit to find out he had a skull fracture and an injured eye The bullet had damaged the iris retina and cornea and his vision was gone Today it is hard for him to continue with his job his depth perception is off he gets headaches and the sight in his remaining eye “fades” at night But he will keep trying “Israel wants to blind the eyes of the truth by sending messages to photographers saying we will hit your eyes to make you stop taking photos” he says “But we do not surrender” Tareq Hajjaj is an author and a member of miserable we see thee lie! Above thy 28 ft concrete separation wall of hatred Palestinians cower in fear and sleepless nights The silent stars are witness to thy dark and somber streets Where the light shineth not And the everlasting darkness of occupation Hangs heavy on the oppressed and occupied Nazi-like Zionist hatred and violence of the past 71 years Kill hope and instill fear in every Palestinian’s heart And nothing but arrests theft torture and killings Are fears that meet thee every single minute Of every single day and every single night Some seven weeks back I attended a colloquium presentation delivered by a member of the religion faculty at the university where I taught for 42 years Known for his scholarship and excellent teaching skills the presenter was reporting on the results of a trip he undertook last summer to study innovative techniques on the teaching of biblical Hebrew Prior to his trip to Occupied Palestine I shared a CP column I’d written summarizing Ilan Pappé’s tome under the title The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine 71 Years Later Zionist Terrorism Is Alive and Well April 19 2019 CP and another scholarly article about Israel’s brutal violation of human rights its theft and desecration of Christian monuments and churches and its outright hatred and demonization of Palestinians in general and Christian Palestinians in particular While during his eloquent presentation my former colleague made repeated references to Israel at no time did he mention Palestine Palestinians occupation wall of separation Apartheid Jews only highways on which he traveled midnight arrests the destruction of entire Palestinian neighborhoods the blight of Israeli-Jews-only settlements subsidized by US taxpayers on the once-beautiful now raped Palestinian landscape that used to be accentuated with rolling hills and quaint valleys dotted with lush green olive groves vineyards and verdant fruit orchards that have given way to ugly manufactured homes and heavily armed enclaves inhabited by machinegun-toting ultra-religious fanatics who gun down Palestinians just for the fun of it blow up their homes and cut down hundred-year old olive trees A Palestinian protester dressed in a Santa Claus costume rings a bell in front of tear gas fired by Israeli troops during a demonstration against the settlements and demanding for free movement for the Palestinians during Christmas near a checkpoint in the West Bank city of Bethlehem December 23 2014 And while these criminals release their pent up hatred in orgies of stone-throwing vandalism and assassinations prescribed by their rabbis in demented expiatory religious and nationalistic rituals akin to ISIL’s orgies of killings the Israel Defense Forces “the most humane army in the world” stand by ready to protect support and cheer the marauders The spectacle always ends in the same manner: the settlers are absolved of their crimes and the Palestinians are arrested for threatening Israel’s security I fear that my former colleague like millions of travelers especially the ignorant Evangelical types to that coveted and fought-over land of the prophets and the birthplace of the Prince of Peace drank the cool aide reeled out by Israel’s ministry of hasbara the world’s foremost Orwellian organ of manufactured facts whose central theme is: Jews Good Palestinians Bad Jews victims Palestinians perpetrators because of the Holocaust the world owes us and must condone what we’re doing to Palestinians those who criticize our racist policies are outright anti-Semites we are God’s Chosen and that includes Trump therefore we can do no wrong Never mind that the Palestinians are also Semites and can also trace their lineage to Abraham and because Palestinians are treated as children of a lesser God they are personae non gratae and fair game in the chess game played by Israel and her subordinate pimps in the US and Europe During the Q amp A session following his presentation my colleague stated that – of all the holy sites he visited – his visit to Bethlehem was the most disappointing – and only because somehow the much celebrated Little Town of Bethlehem lacked the religious/spiritual reverence/charm with which it has been traditionally associated I fear that because much of today’s biblical narratives are a concocted mish mash that evolved over centuries in different climes each succeeding culture augmented its own storyline by interlacing pagan practices with Christian ones A manger scene juxtaposed against concrete blocks seemingly pierced by a mortar shell: with Christmas looming Banksy reveals his latest art piece Hence the blending of the original corpus into myriad European Christmas stories and traditions that resulted in written narratives rich musical and dramatic performances and dazzling canvases With the advent of film and the television America’s 20th century contribution added an abundance of splendor and pageantry And thus it was that in late 18th and 19th century Europe exploiting this celebration of the birth of The Prince of Peace became a motive to ching ching the occasion in what has become for this generation Black Friday and Black Saturday spending bacchanalia to celebrate the billions of dollars going into the pockets of the rich and greedy while giving the rest of us the satisfaction of obtaining made-in-China consumer goods And somehow the meaning of Christmas drifts into the calendar On Sunday December 23 2019 the Beirut Lebanon-based The Daily Star reported the following: BETHLEHEM Palestine: With Christmas looming Banksy’s latest Bethlehem offering appeared Saturday in the Israeli-occupied West Bank: A manger scene juxtaposed with a miniature version of Israel’s separation barrier seemingly pierced by a mortar shell Dubbed the “Scar of Bethlehem” the work shows the baby Jesus Mary and Joseph backlit through damaged concrete chiseled pockmarks exploding out from a gaping hole in four directions approximating the Christmas Star The work is installed at Banksy’s Walled-Off Hotel where all rooms overlook a section of the concrete barrier Israel built to cut off the occupied West Bank from Israeli territory “Love” and “peace” are tagged in English and French respectively on the installation’s concrete blocks while three large wrapped presents are at the forefront of the scene “It is a nativity” hotel manager Wissam Salsaa told AFP after the piece was installed “Banksy has his own contribution to Christmas” “It is a great way to bring up the story of Bethlehem” he continued “the Christmas story in a different way – to make people think more” of how Palestinians live in Bethlehem Salsaa calls the Israeli wall a “scar” that should induce “shame in anyone who supported” its construction The manger scene and hotel which opened two years ago are far from Banksy’s only West Bank imprint In 2007 he painted a number of artworks in Bethlehem including a young girl frisking an Israeli soldier pinned up against a wall In 2005 he sprayed nine stenciled images at different locations along the 8-meter-high separation barrier They included a ladder on the wall a little girl carried away by balloons and a window opening onto a peaceful mountain landscape “Banksy is trying to be a voice for those that cannot speak” Salsaa said He “is creating a new model of resistance through art” The biblical narrative informs us that at the time of Christ’s birth Palestine was an extension of Augustus’ massive empire Palestina/Falasteen was sandwiched between Egypt and Syria the first served as Rome’s breadbasket and the second as Rome’s eastern line of defense and the last stop of the ancient Silk Road and one of the conduits that fed the insatiable Roman treasury to maintain its stranglehold on its expansive Pax Romana Empire Ironic it is that American British and European hegemonic interest in that same region are no different from Rome’s And since 1917 the Brits French and later the Americans have been drawing and redrawing the boundaries of the oil-rich Near East and “What we say goes” is the new Anglo-Franco-Americana Pax Oleum Petra Utilizing the Jewish King Herod as a friendly client and puppet the Romans gave him a free hand And as long as he collected taxes to help enrich Rome’s coffers Herod’s heavy handed rule was viewed benignly by Rome Perceiving the birth of the promised Messiah/King as a threat to his rule Herod ordered the killing of all male infants in Bethlehem and environs One of six images painted by British street artist Banksy as part of a Christmas exhibition in the West Bank town of Bethlehem December 2 2007 It is fair to say that if one compared living conditions in Palestine and the occupied West Bank and Gaza during the time of Jesus’ birth to current living conditions of Palestinians all across the Holy Land one would be shocked at the shrieking and howling of anguished cries of a nation robbed of its birthright dignity and freedom Back to the Q amp A session In an agonizingly hushed if not slightly quivering voice I intoned the following comment to my colleague who to use the metaphor could not see the forest for the trees: “Is it possible that because you had to go through the monstrous fortress-like concrete wall to enter Bethlehem a negative tone was set for you” I followed with the following plea: “I am saddened that you didn’t even mention Palestine or Palestinians – at all Please do not relegate the Palestinians into the trash bin of anonymity” My former colleague magnanimously owned up to having made no mention of Palestine/Palestinians I so wish he’d admitted that he like most Evangelicals was guilty of committing the sin of denial denial that Israelis and Evangelicals are complicit in this heinous crime of denial All of this is to say the following: the Jewish King Herod had no qualms about butchering all infant males in the land where the lamenting and screaming of prophets and innocents are today’s wailing and crying of 8 million anguished Edward Munchian Palestinian “Screamers” Modern day Herods such Zionist Netanyahu and all his ilk share the same killing and maiming instincts of hatred and brutality as their Hitler and Mussolini prototypes Deeply embedded in their psyches is a disregard for human life In a November 2019 aerial assault on besieged Gaza and to rally support for his reelection bid at the prime ministry Netanyahu bragged about the three-day killing spree of 37 Gaza civilians that included 13 members of a single family four children under the age 4 and two expectant mothers whose fetuses never took their first breath And where are the anti-abortion Christians Catholics and Evangelicals – alike Like their 17th and 18th century European counterparts those masters who produced thousands of canvases to memorialize Herod’s Killing of the Innocents Palestinian artists have produced tens of thousands of art works depicting Israel’s 71 years of endless brutalities Yet while the former artists’ compositions grace museum walls across the world rarely does one see a work depicting Israeli carnage Israel’s daily war on Palestinians and especially on Palestinian children is rarely transmitted to an increasingly apathetic world and if one were to even hint at it one is immediately charged with the spurious anti-Semitic assault including most recently prosecution To state that Israel is guilty as charged is to state the truth no matter how inconvenient that truth may be A Palestinian protester wearing a Santa Claus costume is carried by medics after inhaling tear gas fired by Israeli troops during clashes at Bethlehem checkpoint in the West Bank city of Bethlehem Tuesday Dec 23 2014 This Christmas like all the Christmas of the last 71 years Christian Palestinians are denied access to their holy shrines Allison Weir’s online blog If Americans Knew recently stated that Palestinians are “under siege … as Israel announces it will not allow Gaza’s Christians to visit Bethlehem and Jerusalem to celebrate Christmas” 12/19/2019 Editor’s note: Israel “reversed” the decision “pending clearance” but permitted just 55 Gazans to cross the border Furthermore the lucky few Christian Palestinians from the West Bank or East Jerusalem who are given permission to visit the holy shrines have to go through excruciating hours on end of successive check points during which they are strip searched insulted and humiliated Lucky is the Palestinian child whose Christmas gift is not stolen by Israeli soldiers the theft of course is always a matter of Israeli national security Ironic it is that while the Christian Palestinians who can trace their ancestry to the early Christian church are denied access to their places of worship hundreds of thousands of foreign pilgrims are given the royal treatment as they are led around much like obedient sheep by Israeli tour guides who indulge in Zionist hasbara while diluting actual historical facts about the role played by Christian and Muslim Palestinians in preserving maintaining and protecting the Holy sites that continue to be desecrated by Israel These modern day Crusaders are no different from their barbarian European counterparts On 12/5/2019 Allison Weir reported that “It feels like Palestinians are constantly dying … 43 in November 526 since Trump’s Jerusalem announcement … 111 of them children … 22 women 6 Palestinians with special needs … and 13 prisoners … killed in Israeli jails … ‘Where in the world is the world’ asked one Palestinian whose family was blown to pieces and whose house was demolished” Much as Herod hated infants Zionists hate Palestinian children Palestinian schools are destroyed their schools’ playground equipment is either stolen or destroyed tear gas and firebombs are lobbed into their schools and homes children as young as 4 years old have been arrested detained and held sans parental visitation for days at a time And finally as proof of Israel’s inhumanity and brazen disregard for common decency Allison Weir reports that “Right now many Palestinian children from Gaza lie in West Bank hospitals facing painful prolonged cancer treatment or surgery One in five are there without a mother or father emphasis hers because Israel denied both parents’ permission to travel with the sick child” 12/182019 Oh how Goya-esque Zionism and its proponents have gotten to be Dear Kafka had you lived to see raw Zionist brutality you would have been shamefully mortified and embarrassed of your tribe’s barbaric behavior You would have also shamed the Netanyahus Trumps Salmans Modis Johnsons Asads Putins Balsonaroses Sissis and Aung Suus of this world You would have no doubt decried the fact that instead of Wise Men and Women heading to Bethlehem carrying precious gifts the world is led by self-centered racist and woefully flawed characters better known as Modern Day Merchants of Death wreaking havoc in all the hamlets and Beit Lahems of our modern world In spite of all the human misery brought about due to Jewish Christian Muslim Hindu and Buddhist fanaticism the story of the birth of the Christ King is a story of the triumph of love over hatred hope over despair giving instead of receiving humility over pride inclusivity over exclusion kindness to the stranger instead of incarcerating him choosing life over death choosing peace over war feeding the needy instead of taking away his sparse meal sheltering the homeless instead of housing him in mangy cardboard boxes and like the Good in the History of the Israeli occupation of the oPt as it has entered the 14th consecutive year without any improvement to the movement of persons and goods humanitarian conditions and bearing catastrophic consequences on all aspects of life Furthermore IOF uses Erez Crossing that is designated for movement of individuals as an ambush to arrest Palestinians who obtain permits to exit via are insufficient to force Kim to “denuclearize” as seems apparent is Trump prepared to force him to do so” As of Dec 26 Kim Jong Un’s “Christmas gift” to President Donald Trump had not arrived Most foreign policy analysts predict it will be a missile test more impressive than any Pyongyang has yet carried off What is Kim’s game What does Kim want He cannot want war with the United States as this could result in the annihilation of the Kim family dynasty that has ruled North Korea since World War II Kim is all about self-preservation What he appears to want in his confrontation with Trump is a victory without war In the near-term Kim seeks three things: recognition of his regime as the legitimate government of North Korea and its acceptance in all the forums of the world trade and an end to all US and UN sanctions and a nuclear arsenal sufficient to deter a US attack including missiles that can strike US bases in South Korea Japan Guam and the Western Pacific And he seeks the capability to deliver a nuclear warhead on the US mainland Nor is this last goal unreasonable from Kim’s vantage point For he knows what became of the two other nations of George W Bush’s “axis of evil” that failed to develop nuclear weapons Saddam Hussein’s Iraq was invaded and he was hanged and his sons hunted down and killed The Ayatollah’s Iran negotiated a 2015 nuclear deal with America and opened up its nuclear facilities to intrusive inspections to show that Tehran did not have a nuclear weapons program Trump came to power trashed the deal reimposed sanctions and is choking Iran to death Moammar Gadhafi surrendered his WMD in 2004 and opened up his production facilities And in 2011 the US attacked Libya and Gadhafi was lynched by a mob Contrast the fate of these regimes and rulers with the Kim family’s success His father Kim Jong Il tested nuclear weapons and missiles in defiance of US warnings and now the son is invited to summits with the US president in Singapore and Hanoi If Kim did not have nuclear weapons would American presidents be courting him Would US secretaries of state be visiting Pyongyang If Kim did not have nuclear weapons who would pay the least attention to the Hermit Kingdom Undeniably with his promised “Christmas gift” possibly a missile capable of hitting the US Kim is pushing the envelope He is taunting the Americans We have told him what he must do And he is telling us where we can go But by so doing Kim has put the ball squarely in Trump’s court The question Trump faces: Is he prepared to accept North Korea joining Russia and China as a third adversarial power with the ability to launch a nuclear strike on the continental United States And if US sanctions are insufficient to force Kim to “denuclearize” as seems apparent is Trump prepared to force him to do so Is Trump prepared to use “fire and fury” to remove Kim’s nukes With 28500 US troops and thousands of US citizens in South Korea many within artillery range of the DMZ is Trump prepared to risk a clash that could ignite a second Korean War in the election year 2020 Is the president prepared for whatever that might bring How does this confrontation play out A guess: The US has lived with North Korea’s nuclear weapons for a decade and Trump is not going to risk a second Korean conflict with a military attack on Kim’s nuclear and missile arsenals Kim Jong Un and his father have created a new reality in Korea and we are going to have to live with it Where does East Asia go from here South Korea has twice the population of the North and an economy 40 times as large Japan has a population five times that of North Korea and an economy 100 times as large If the US treaty guarantees dating to the 1950s to fight for these two nations come into question as a result of America’s reluctance to face down Pyongyang more forcibly on its nuclear arsenal these nations are almost certain to start considering all options for their future security Among these are building their own nuclear arsenals and closer ties to the one nation that has shown it can discipline North Korea — China Much is on the line here Kim’s challenge is ultimately about the credibility of the United States which has treaty commitments and issued war guarantees to scores of nations in NATO Europe the Mideast and East Asia but whose people have zero interest in any new war especially a second Korean War If the world sees that America is reluctant to face down or fight a North Korea that is threatening us will they retain the old confidence that the United States will risk war for them What Kim is undermining is not just US security but US credibility Source Article from Related Posts Who Is Winning the Arms Race Russia’s “Super-Weapons” Russia’s defense budget is a small
