mainland China But the “protestors” in Hong Kong clearly pursued much broader political goals than the mere cancellation of an extradition bill This was plainly evident after Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced on June 14 that she was delaying the proposed extradition law Following Lam’s announcement which was widely interpreted as a goodwill gesture to the protesters the tensions in the Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi revoked the territory’s long-standing autonomy putting it on lockdown and plunging the region into chaos India has ordered all tourists and religious pilgrims to evacuate the territory while sending in tens of thousands of armed soldiers and shutting down virtually all telecommunication networks These soldiers join an occupying force estimated to number within the hundreds of thousands in what is already considered the most militarized place on earth India’s oppression of Kashmiris however cannot be seen in a vacuum Over the past decades the country’s growing ties with Israel have created a situation in which the the oppression of Kashmir is linked to Israel’s treatment of Palestinians The Indian occupation of Kashmir and the establishment of Israel in 1948 which resulted in the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians began only months apart from one another In July 1949 two years after India and Pakistan declared independence from British rule the two countries signed an agreement to establish a ceasefire line dividing the Kashmir region between them Indian rule in the territory has led to decades of unrest Although the Indian presence in Kashmir never amounted to settler colonialism like in the Palestinian case where a large proportion of the existing population of the region was expelled and replaced by a settler population India has maintained a heavy military presence in the area and has acted as a police state vis-à-vis Kashmiri civilians and politicians Kashmiri solidarity with the Palestinians can be traced as far back as the 1950s and 60s when the Kashmir liberation movement sought to align itself with other anti-imperialist struggles abroad It was also during this period when India first established relations with Israel Although then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru publicly championed the Palestinian cause he permitted the opening of an Israeli consulate in Mumbai in 1953 The consulate gathered information on India’s Evacuee Property Laws which served as a model for Israel’s Absentee Property Law a legal instrument that allowed the state to expropriate land belonging to Palestinian refugees The late stages of the Cold War saw a dramatic improvement in Indian-Israeli relations In 1992 under the premiership of Narasimha Rao a member of the Indian National Congress India and Israel established normal relations with India opening an embassy in Tel Aviv in January Two main factors explain this development both of which are related to the outbreak of the First Intifada against Israel’s occupation as well as armed insurrection in Kashmir against Indian rule in the late 1980s The first reason stems from the decline of the Soviet Union which forced India to search for a new supplier of arms and military technology Israel whose flagging economy at the time necessitated entering new markets represented an ideal partner The relationship was further strengthened when the US imposed sanctions on arms sales to India after the latter conducted nuclear tests in 1998 Those sanctions resulted in India becoming Israel’s largest client for arms and military technology a legacy that persists until today Former Israeli President Ezer Weizman walks past the Indian Army Honor Guard during an official visit to the country December 30 1996 Sa’ar Ya’acov/GPO The second reason is based on the convergence of the logic that Israel and India employed in suppressing popular resistance in the occupied territories and armed insurrection in Kashmir respectively highlighting issues of security counterterrorism and the threat of Islamic extremism In 1992 then Indian Defense Minister Sharad Pawar admitted to Indian-Israeli cooperation on issues of counterterrorism including exchanging information on so-called terrorist groups national doctrines and operational experience – in other words strategies methods and tactics of occupation and domination This lead to a shift in India’s position on Palestine which began mirroring Israel’s insistence that Kashmir was primarily a matter of Indian domestic concern Between Zionism and Hindu nationalism Relations between India and Israel grew even closer with the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 1990s The BJP which today is led by Modi adheres to the political ideology known as Hindutva or Hindu Nationalism The history of Hindu nationalists’ affinity with Zionism is well documented by professor Sumantra Bose of the London School of Economics who traces it back to the 1920s when Vinayak Damodar Savarkar the father of Hindutva supported the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine The BJP and other Hindu Nationalists have since become obsessed with replicating the Zionist project in turning a constitutionally secular India into a Hindu ethnocratic state Many of the BJP’s aspirations and policy proposals for Kashmir are imitations of extant Israeli practices in Palestine Key among these is the desire to build Israeli-style Hindu-only settlements in Kashmir as a way of instigating demographic change For example the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh RSS a non-state volunteer Hindu paramilitary volunteer group to which the BJP are affiliated have long desired the repeal of the state subject laws that have maintained the demographic make-up of Kashmir Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak at Olga Beach just 60 miles north of the Gaza Strip Kobi Gideon/GPO These changes are clearly inspired by the Israeli settlement model as expressed by BJP lawmaker Ravinder Raina who in 2015 stated that the government of India will use its army to protect Hindu-only settlements in Jammu and Kashmir This type of securitization and protection would entail an expansion of the security apparatus that already restricts the flow of life for most Kashmiris using them as a pretext to justify a new level of domination and intrusiveness Aside from the parallels in policy objectives the discourse used by supporters of the current regime in India resemble old Israeli refrains Both Israel and India claim to be exceptional democracies despite their treatment of large swaths of populations under their control Additionally both Zionists and Hindu Nationalists argue that the existence of many Muslim countries in the world necessitates a Jewish and Hindu state respectively This perpetuates the lie that Palestinians and Indian Muslims can supposedly live elsewhere yet choose to live in Palestine and India only to antagonize Jews and Hindus Meanwhile the variety of tactics used by India to control the civilian population of Kashmir strongly resembles those used by Israel in Palestine These include “arbitrary arrests extra-judicial killings enforced disappearances curfews collective punishment administrative detention torture rape and sexual abuse the suppression of freedom of speech and assembly house demolitions and so forth” Decades of solidarity The bond of solidarity that exists between Palestinians and Kashmiris runs deep and can be traced as far back as the 1960s when protests erupted in Kashmir over Israel’s behavior around Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa Mosque resulting in deaths and curfews Since then Kashmiri solidarity with the Palestinian cause can be loosely understood as having gone through three relatively overlapping stages The first of these stages which began during the 1960s saw the Kashmiri Plebiscite Front first cast India as an “imperialist state” that rejected the Kashmiri right to self-determination In doing this the Kashmiri liberation movement aligned itself with similar global causes including the Vietnamese struggle against the United States the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa and the Palestinian struggle against Israel Kashmiri scholar Mohamad Junaid writes that Palestine “became an evocative metaphor among Kashmiris to describe their own condition reflecting an incipient fear of ethnic cleansing land dispossession and an ever-tightening architecture of the occupation” Indian security forces used tear basis of solidarity take on a more religious character This period coincided with the Afghan Jihad against the Soviet Union which indirectly led to the rise of armed Islamist resistance groups such as Hamas in Palestine and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in Kashmir Rather than the discourse of solidarity being based largely in the language of anti-imperalism and nationalism it became characterized by concepts of jihad and Islamic solidarity This trend was further strengthened during the 1990s with the rise of the BJP which led to an increase in communal tensions and insecurity surrounding Muslim life in India The third and current stage of Kashmiri-Palestinian solidarity comes as a response to the growing ties between India and Israel It has no longer become accurate for Palestinians and Kashmiris to view Israel and India as simply analogous oppressors — many now view them as partners in occupation As has been demonstrated by the transnational Palestinian response to the recent events solidarity with Kashmir has taken on an increasingly more practical importance An instrument of surrender The revocation of Articles 35A and 370 paves the way for Indian presence in Kashmir to further mirror Zionist presence in historic Palestine since this allows the Indian state to rule Kashmir directly without the need for Kashmir’s state legislature which was also recently abolished Furthermore it facilitates the execution of plans to alter the demographic make-up of Kashmir by allowing Indians from across the country to purchase property and settle there under the protection of the Indian military presence just as the demographic make-up of the West Bank continues to be altered with the construction of Jewish-only settlements The Kashmiri state legislature and its main politicians Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have long acted as middlemen who manage the natives on behalf of the occupying power facilitating the occupation in much the same way as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas does in the West Bank Just as Edward Said once referred to the Oslo Accords as “an instrument of Palestinian surrender” many Kashmiris regard the 1975 Indira-Sheikh Accord as a betrayal of past liberation movements The Accord allowed previously popular Kashmiri leader Sheikh Abdullah to become the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir in exchange for forfeiting the longstanding Kashmiri demand state to a union territory without a legislative assembly India’s colonial domination over the contested region will only become more overtly coercive in representing Indian interests This is a crucial development to be observed closely by Palestinians who live in areas where the Israeli occupation is currently facilitated by the Palestinian Authority As things move forward it is increasingly clear that the colonial processes in Kashmir and Palestine will become further interdependent on one another What Israel does in Palestine is likely to happen in Kashmir and what India does in Kashmir is likely to happen in Palestine In aiming to dismantle Israeli apartheid and settler colonialism it is essential to observe its global consequences for it is highly likely that these 11 2019 Gili Getz NEW YORK CITY — Hundreds of American Jewish demonstrators staged a sit-in at one of Amazon’s flagship stores in New York on Sunday to protest the company’s ties to the big-data firm Palantir which contracts directly with Immigration and Custom Enforcement forces The action resulted in the arrest of 44 people including a New York City councilman several rabbis and high-profile public figures like Eli Valley and Molly Crabapple The protest organized by a coalition of Jewish groups including T’ruah Jews for Racial and Economic Justice JFREJ and Never Again Action as well a number of synagogues was organized in solidarity with immigrants threatened with deportation by ICE and who are vulnerable to attacks by white nationalist terrorists It was one of many protests involving thousands of American Jews in cities across the United States planned to coincide with Tisha B’Av a traditional Jewish day of mourning After a silent march through midtown Manhattan the protesters dressed in black occupied the Amazon store and conducted a Tisha B’Av service that combined the traditional liturgy with readings of testimonies from immigrants detained by ICE Speakers drew direct parallels between the treatment of Jewish immigrants during World War II and that of Latinx immigrants today and the crowd periodically chanted the refrains “close the camps” and “never again is now” “The cries of the Jewish people of our people against the forms of oppression visited upon us through our migrations across Jewish history require us to speak out about what’s being done now” said Brad Lander a Jewish city councilman from Brooklyn who was among those arrested during the sit-in inside the Amazon store Lander pointed to the similarities between the historical experiences of Jews and those of Latinx immigrants today a parallel that the Never Again Action protests have insisted on drawing “Amazon has chosen to make itself a corporate partner to ICE” he added “And if they’re either so addicted to profit or so callous to suffering that they are willing to continue to be a corporate in ICE’s bloody work then I think it is very appropriate for us to target them in today’s action” “Part of the idea of civil disobedience is to prevent something from becoming normal — but the times aren’t normal” Lander explained Protest organizers connected what they grave with him There was certainly a warning that something might happen Two weeks ago he was reportedly found unconscious in his jail cell with marks around his neck It was suggested that he might have tried to kill himself or alternatively had been beaten up by another inmate There was also considerable speculation that some aggrieved part of the Deep State was trying to kill him to silence him The subsequent press reports revealed that Epstein had been taken to a hospital but there has been no follow-up about his condition or status apart from a brief note that he had been returned to the same jail under suicide watch In any event the story had pretty much died which is precisely what a lot of the high rollers and politicians who became involved with Epstein would have liked to see happen Nevertheless investigations of the “Affair Epstein” reportedly were continuing at the federal level as well as in New York State and Florida “Vast sums of money” The most recent elaboration of the Epstein saga prior to his death came from his former patron Leslie Wexner the canny Jewish business tycoon who built an Ohio based fashion empire called L Brands from scratch L Brands by the way includes Victoria’s Secret which features young women strutting around in their underwear The 81 year old Wexner claimed in a 564 word letter that the wily Epstein “misappropriated vast sums of money” from him In the letter Wexner admitted to having lost at least 46 million from his family money but some media accounts are suggesting that the fraud amounted to much more possibly as much as 500 million And the alleged theft also extended to property to include the series of transactions that left Epstein possessing the Upper East Side mansion where he resided and did his filming of to sever ties with Epstein in 2007 after Florida authorities charged Jeffrey in early 2006 with multiple counts of molestation and unlawful sexual activity with a minor In 2008 Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of solicitation of prostitution from a minor and was required to register as a sex offender but he received an astonishingly mild jail sentence of eighteen months with a private cell unlimited visitors including young women and daily release so he could be picked up by his driver to go to work in his Palm Beach office a bit of incomprehensible leniency that is currently being subjected to criminal investigation by the state of Florida After the sentence was handed down the county sheriff observed that “He was astonished that Epstein had to go to prison at all” Indeed the entire Florida side of the Epstein story seems to have disappeared down some memory hole Epstein was convicted for his involvement with prostitution but the only remaining issue was the consequences that he faced That is where other players stepped in including Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz Palm Beach county state attorney Barry Krischer and the Miami office US Attorney Alexander Acosta Barry Krischer L Alex Acosta R Told to “back off” from Epstein My belief that Jeffrey Epstein was an intelligence agent is based principally on Acosta’s comments when being cleared by the Trump transition team He was asked “Is the Epstein case going to cause a problem for confirmation hearings” … “Acosta testified that he’d had just one meeting on the Epstein case He’d cut the non-prosecution deal with one of Epstein’s attorneys because he had ‘been told’ to back off that Epstein was above his pay grade ‘I was told Epstein belonged to intelligence and to leave it alone’” The questions about Epstein remain even though he is gone but one fears that the authorities will be disinclined to further investigate a dead man It appears that no one in the various investigative agencies or the mainstream media has been interested in what Acosta meant even though it would be simple enough to ask him Who told him to back off And how did they explain it And then there is Epstein’s Austrian passport Was it fake or real with a real name and photo substitution or alternation of both picture and name How did he get it Austrian passports are highly desirable in intelligence circles because the country is neutral and its holders can travel just about everywhere without a visa Agent for Mossad And there’s more As a former intelligence officer myself there is little doubt in my mind that what Epstein did and how he did it was an intelligence operation There is no other viable explanation for his filming of prominent politicians and celebrities having sex with young girls And as for the question of whom Epstein might have been working for the most likely answer is Mossad The CIA would have had no interest in compiling dossiers on prominent Americans but American movers and shakers like Bill Clinton with his 26 trips on the Lolita Express former Governor Bill Richardson or former Senator George Mitchell are precisely the types of “agents of influence” that the Mossad would seek to coerce or even blackmail into cooperation Other compelling evidence for a Mossad connection came from Epstein’s relationship with Ghislaine Maxwell who reportedly served as his key procurer of young girls Ghislaine is the daughter of Robert Maxwell who died or possibly was assassinated in mysterious circumstances in 1991 Maxwell was an Anglo-Jewish businessman very cosmopolitan in profile like Epstein a multi-millionaire who was very controversial with what were regarded as ongoing ties to Mossad After his death he was given a state funeral by Israel in which six serving and former heads of Israeli intelligence listened while Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir eulogized: “He has done more for Israel than can today be said” Israel and high-profile Jewish players also have continued to turn up like bad pennies in the Epstein case but no one seems to be interested in pursuing that angle Epstein clearly had contact with former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres and Ehud Barak and Wexner also had close ties to the Jewish state and its government Barry Krischer who may have been the source of the comments to Acosta has received the Anti-Defamation League ADL award Evidence also suggests that Krischer cooperating with rabidly pro-Israel Epstein lawyer Alan Dershowitz played a key role in the failure to adequately punish Epstein for his conviction for pedophilia According to a recent New Yorker story the police investigators of the Epstein case observed that “the tone and tenor of the discussions of this case with Krischer changed completely” after his meetings with Dershowitz At that point the two detectives most involved in the case found themselves under extreme pressure They were surveilled constantly by private investigators and they even had their household trash snatched and searched And the resulting plea agreement with Krischer “…was due to the efforts of Dershowitz who had proceeded to attack and smear the victims” Alan Dershowitz Evidence tampering Krischer claims that his office “subpoenaed witnesses took evidence to a Grand Jury which returned a single felony count indictment against Epstein of soliciting prostitution” but the reality appears to be that he worked with the defense to get Epstein off There was plenty of evidence based on more than forty interviews with victims to convict Epstein but instead of having him arrested Krischer instead set up the Grand Jury with no mention of underage victims to mitigate the possible consequences He also did not inform the victims of what he had arranged so they could challenge the verdict and penalty a violation of Crime Victims Rights Act The Palm Beach police who worked the case at the time told The Miami Herald as part of an investigation published in November that they felt pressured by Krischer to downgrade Epstein’s case to a misdemeanor or to drop it entirely They said “the fix was in” Acosta more recently did not refer to Krischer by name during an early July news conference but spoke of the Palm Beach County state’s attorney He described his own office as stepping in to ensure Epstein faced some form of punishment “Simply put the Palm Beach State Attorney’s Office was willing to let Epstein walk free No jail time Nothing” Acosta said “Prosecutors in my former office found this to be completely unacceptable and we became involved” Many unanswered questions After thirteen months in country club jail in Palm Beach Epstein was released At his mansion in New York City he subsequent had an artist paint a mural of himself in jail evidently as an insider joke for those who knew about his time behind bars End of story Not exactly even though Epstein is now dead But the key questions go unanswered including was he a spy for Israel And what about the Krischer-Dershowitz connection that kept him from being punished commensurate with his crimes Did those instructions also come from Israel or from its friends in the US Justice Department Will the three simultaneous investigations currently taking place even continue and ask the right questions now that the target of the investigation is gone major corporations and foreign governments to boycott Israel Singer’s nonprofit organization has acted as the vehicle through which Netanyahu’s policy has been realized via the group’s close connections to the Israeli PM and Singer’s long-time support for Netanyahu and the Likud Party With deep ties to Netanyahu the American Israel Public Affairs Committee AIPAC and controversial tech companies—like Amdocs—that spied on the American government this Singer-funded organization has formed a nexus of connections between the public and private sectors of both the American and Israeli economies with the single goal of making Israel the new technology superpower largely at the expense of the American economy and the US government which currently gives 38 billion in annual aid to Israel RESEARCHED AND DEVELOPED IN ISRAEL In recent years the top US tech companies have been shifting many of their most critical operations particularly research and development to one country: Israel A 2016 report in Business Insider noted that Google Facebook Microsoft Amazon and Apple had all opened up research and development RampD centers in recent years with some of them having as many as three such centers in Israel a country roughly the size of New Jersey Other major tech companies that have also opened key operation and research centers in Israel include SanDisk Nvidia PayPal Palantir and Dell Forbes noted last year that the world’s top 10 tech companies were now “doing mission-critical work in Israel that’s core to their businesses back at HQ” Yet some of these tech giants particularly those based in the United States are heavily investing in their Israeli branches For example Intel Corporation which is the world’s second largest manufacturer of semiconductor computer chips and is headquartered in California has long been a major employer in Israel with over 10000 employees in the Zionist state However earlier this year Intel announced that it would be investing 11 billion in a new factory in Israel and would receive around 1 billion in an Israeli government grant for that investment Just a matter of months after Intel announced its major new investment in Israel it announced a new round of layoffs in the United States Yet this is just one recent example of what has become a trend for Intel In 2018 Intel made public its plan to invest 5 billion in one of its Israeli factories and had invested an additional 15 billion in Israeli-created autonomous driving technology a year prior creating thousands of Intel jobs in Israel Notably over a similar time frame Intel has cut nearly 12000 jobs in the United States While this great transfer of investment and jobs was undermining the US economy and hurting American workers particularly in the tech sector Intel received over 25 million dollars in subsidies from the US government A similar phenomenon has been occurring at another US-based tech giant Microsoft Beginning in 2014 and continuing into 2018 Microsoft laid off well over 20000 employees most of them Americans in several different rounds of staff cuts Over that same time period Microsoft has been on a hiring spree in Israel building new campuses and investing billions of dollars annually in its Israel-based research and development center and in other Israeli start-up companies creating thousands of jobs abroad In addition Microsoft has been pumping millions of dollars into technology programs at Israeli universities and institutes such as the Technion Institute Over this same time frame Microsoft has received nearly 197 million in subsidies from the state governments of Washington Iowa and Virginia Israeli politicians and tech company executives have attributed this dramatic shift to Israel’s tech prowess and growing reputation as a technological innovation hub obscuring Singer’s effort in concert with Netanyahu to counter a global movement aimed at boycotting Israel and to make Israel a global “cyber power” START-UP NATION CENTRAL AND THE NEOCONS In 2009 a book titled Start Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle written by American neoconservative Dan Senor and Jerusalem Post journalist Saul Singer unrelated to Paul quickly rose to the New York Times bestseller list for its depiction of Israel as the tech start-up capital of the world The book—published by the Council on Foreign Relations where Senor was then serving as adjunct senior fellow—asserts that Israel’s success in producing so many start-up companies resulted from the combination of its liberal immigration laws and its “leverage of the business talents of young people with military experience” In a post-publication interview with the blog Freakonomics Senor asserted that service in the Israeli military was crucial to Israel’s tech sector success “Certain units have become technology boot camps where 18- to 22-year-olds get thrown projects and missions that would make the heads spin of their counterparts in universities or the private sector anywhere else in the world” wrote Senor and Singer “The Israelis come out of the military not just with hands-on exposure to next-gen technology but with training in teamwork mission orientation leadership and a desire to continue serving their country by contributing to its tech sector—a source of pride for just about every Israeli” The book in addition to the many accolades it received from the mainstream press left a lasting impact on top Republican donor Paul Singer known for funding the most influential neoconservative think tanks in America as noted above Paul Singer was so inspired by Senor and Singer’s book that he decided to spend 20 million to fund and create an organization with a similar name He created Start-Up Nation Central SUNC several years after the book’s release in 2009 To achieve his vision Singer—who is also a top donor to the Republican Party and Trump—tapped Israeli economist Eugene Kandel who served as Netanyahu’s national economic adviser and chaired the Israeli National Economic Council from 2009 to 2015 Senor was likely directly involved in the creation of SUNC as he was then employed by Paul Singer and with neoconservatives Bill Kristol and Robert Kagan co-founded the FPI In addition Dan Senor’s sister Wendy Singer unrelated to either Paul or Saul long-time director of Israel’s AIPAC office became the organization’s executive director SUNC’s management team in addition to Eugene Kandel and Wendy Singer includes Guy Hilton as the organization’s general manager Hilton is a long-time marketing executive at Israeli telecommunications company Amdocs and is credited with having “transformed” the company’s marketing organization Amdocs was once highly controversial in the United States after it was revealed by a 2001 Fox News investigation that numerous federal agencies had investigated the company which then had contracts with the 25 largest telephone companies in the country for its alleged role in an aggressive espionage operation that targeted the US government Hilton worked at Microsoft prior to joining Amdocs Beyond the management team SUNC’s board of directors includes Paul Singer Dan Senor and Terry Kassel—who work for Singer at his hedge fund Elliott Management—and Raphael Ouzan An officer in the elite foreign military intelligence unit of Israel Unit 8200 Ouzan co-founded BillGuard the day after he left that unit which is often compared to the US National Security Agency NSA Within five months of its founding BillGuard was backed by funding from PayPal founder Peter Thiel and former CEO of Google Eric Schmidt Ouzan is also connected to US tech companies that have greatly expanded their Israeli branches since SUNC’s founding—such as Microsoft Google PayPal and Intel all of which support Ouzan’s non-profit Israel Tech Challenge According to reports from the time published in Haaretz and Bloomberg SUNC was explicitly founded to serve as “a foreign ministry for Israel’s tech industry” and “to strength Israel’s economy” while also aiming to counter the BDS movement as well as the growth of illegal Jewish-only settlements in occupied Palestinian territory Since its founding SUNC has sought to transfer tech jobs from foreign companies to Israel by developing connections and influence with foreign governments and companies so that they “deepen their relationship with Israel’s tech industry” Although SUNC has since expanded to include other sectors of the Israeli “start-up” economy its focus has long remained on Israel’s tech specifically its cybersecurity industry Foreign investment in this single Israeli industry has grown from 227 million in 2014 to 815 million in 2017 In addition to its own activities SUNC appears to be closely linked to a similar organization sponsored by Coca-Cola and Daimler Mercedes-Benz called The Bridge which also seeks to connect Israeli start-up companies with large international corporations Indeed SUNC according to its website was actually responsible for Daimler Mercedes Benz’s decision to join The Bridge thanks to a delegation from the company that SUNC hosted in Israel and the connections made during that visit TEAMING UP WITH ISRAEL’S UNIT 8200 Notably SUNC has deep ties to Israel’s military intelligence Unit 8200 and true to Start-Up Nation’s praise of IDF service as key to Israel’s success has been instrumental in connecting Unit 8200 alumni with key roles in foreign companies particularly American tech companies For instance Maty Zwaig a former lieutenant colonel in Unit 8200 is SUNC’s current director of human capital programs and SUNC’s current manager of strategic programs Tamar Weiss is also a former member of the unit One particularly glaring connection between SUNC and Unit 8200 is Inbal Arieli who served as SUNC’s vice president of strategic partnerships from 2014 to 2017 and continues to serve as a senior adviser to the organization A former lieutenant in Unit 8200 Arieli is the founder and head of the 8200 Entrepreneurship and Innovation Support Program EISP which was the first start-up accelerator in Israel aimed at harnessing “the vast network and entrepreneurial DNA of Unit 8200 alumni” and is currently one of the top company accelerators in Israel Arieli was the top executive at 8200 EISP while working at SUNC Another key connection between SUNC and Unit 8200 is SUNC’s promotion of Team8 a company-creation platform whose CEO and co-founder is Nadav Zafrir former commander of Unit 8200 In addition to prominently featuring Team8 and Zafrir on the cybersecurity section of its website SUNC also sponsored a talk by Zafrir and an Israeli government economist at the World Economic Forum often referred to as “Davos” that was attended personally by Paul Singer Team8’s investors include Google’s Eric Schmidt Microsoft and Walmart—and it recently hired former head of the NSA and US Cyber Command retired Admiral Mike Rogers Team8 described the decision to hire Rogers as being “instrumental in helping strategize” Team8’s expansion in the United States However Jake Williams a veteran of NSA’s Tailored Access Operations hacking unit told CyberScoop: “Rogers is not being brought into this role because of his technical experience …It’s purely because of his knowledge of classified operations and his ability to influence many in the US government and private-sector contractors” In addition to connections to Unit 8200-linked groups like Team8 and 8200 EISP SUNC also directly collaborates with the IDF in an initiative aimed at preparing young Israeli women to serve in Unit 8200 That initiative called the CyberGirlz Club is jointly funded by Israel’s Defense Ministry SUNC and the Rashi Foundation the philanthropic organization set up by the Leven family of Perrier-brand water which has close ties to the Israeli government and IDF “Our aim is to bring the girls to this process already skilled with the knowledge needed to pass the exams for Unit 8200 and serve in the military as programmers” Zwaig told Israel National News SEEDING AMERICAN TECH Yaniv Bar l and Udi Cohen former Israeli intelligence officers and founders of the start-up Aclim8 demonstrate their co-developed “COMBAR” all-in-one hiking tool for “weekend warriors” at their office in the northern Israeli Kibbutz of Maayan Tzvi May 21 2018 Israel’s military is an incubator for future high-tech firms started by former soldiers JACK GUEZ/AFP/GETTY IMAGES The connections between SUNC and Unit 8200 are troubling for more than a few reasons one being that Unit 8200 often likened to the NSA closely coordinates with Israel’s intelligence agency the Mossad and is responsible for 90 percent of the intelligence material obtained by the Israeli government according to its former commander Yair Cohen “There isn’t a major operation from the Mossad or any intelligence security agency that 8200 is not involved in” Cohen told Forbes in 2016 An organization founded by an American billionaire is thus actively promoting the presence of former military intelligence officers in foreign companies specifically American companies while also promoting the transfer of jobs and investment to that same country Particularly troubling is the fact that since SUNC’s founding the number of former Unit 8200 members in top positions in American tech companies has skyrocketed Based on a non-exhaustive analysis conducted by MintPress of over 200 LinkedIn accounts of former Israeli military intelligence and intelligence officers in three major tech companies numerous former Unit 8200 alumni were found to currently hold top managerial or executive positions in Microsoft Google and Facebook The influence of Unit 8200 on these companies very likely goes deeper than this non-exhaustive analysis revealed given that many of these companies acquired several Israeli start-ups staffed by Unit 8200 alumni who subsequently went on to found new companies and start-ups shortly after acquisition Furthermore due to the limitations of LinkedIn’s set-up MintPress was not able to access the complete list of Unit 8200 alumni at these three tech companies meaning that the eye-opening numbers found were generated by a relatively small sample This jump in Unit 8200 members in top positions at tech companies of global importance is actually a policy long promoted by Netanyahu whose long-time economic adviser is the chief executive at SUNC During an interview with Fox News last year Netanyahu was asked by Fox News host Mark Levin if the large growth seen in recent years in Israel’s technology sector was part of Netanyahu’s plan “That’s very much my plan” Netanyahu responded “It’s a very deliberate policy” He later added that “Israel had technology because the military especially military intelligence produced a lot of capabilities These incredibly gifted young men and women who come out of the military or the Mossad they want to start their start-ups” Netanyahu further outlined this policy at the 2019 Cybertech conference in Tel Aviv where he stated that Israel’s emergence as one of the top five “cyber powers” had “required allowing this combination of military intelligence academia and industry to converge in one place” and that this further required allowing “our graduates of our military and intelligence units to merge into companies with local partners and foreign partners” The direct tie-ins of SUNC to Netanyahu and the fact that Paul Singer has also been a long-time political donor and backer of Netanyahu suggest that SUNC is a key part of Netanyahu’s policy of placing former military intelligence and intelligence operatives in strategic positions in major technology companies Notably just as SUNC was founded to counter the BDS movement Netanyahu has asserted that this policy of ensuring Israel’s role as a “cyber power” is aimed at increasing its diplomatic power and specifically undermining BDS as well as the United Nations which has repeatedly condemned Israel’s government for war crimes and violations of international law in relation to the Palestinians BUILDING THE BI-NATIONAL SURVEILLANCE STATE To sum up a powerful American billionaire has built an influential organization with deep connections to AIPAC with an Israeli company that has been repeatedly investigated for spying on the US government Amdocs and with the elite Israeli military intelligence Unit 8200 that has used its influential connections to the US government and the private sector to dramatically shift the operations and make-up of major companies in a critical sector of the American economy Further consider that US government documents leaked by Edward Snowden have flagged Israel as a “leading threat” to the infrastructure of US financial and banking institutions which use much of the software produced by these top tech companies and have also flagged Israel as a top espionage threat One US government document cited Israel as the third most aggressive intelligence service against the US behind Russia and China Thus Paul Singer’s pet project in Start-Up Nation Central has undermined not only the US economy but arguably national security as well This concern is further exacerbated by the deep ties connecting top tech companies like Microsoft and Google to the US military Microsoft and Google are both key military contractors Microsoft is set to win a lucrative contract for the Pentagon’s cloud management and has partnered with the Department of Defense to produce a “secure” election system known as ElectionGuard that is set to be implemented in some US states for the 2020 general election Top US tech companies have filled executive positions with former members of Israeli military intelligence and moved strategic and critical operations to Israel boosting Israel’s economy at the expense of America’s SUNC’s role in this marked shift merits the deepest scrutiny Whitney Webb is a
