NEW DELHI: Three billion people or 40 of the world’s population do not have a place in their homes to wash their hands with water and soap as per a report by UNICEF The report stated that the three quarters of those who lack access to water and soap live in the world’s poorest countries and are amongst the most vulnerable: children and families living in informal settlements migrant and refugee camps or in areas of active conflict This puts an estimated 1 billion people at immediate risk of COVID-19 simply because they lack basic handwashing facilities Associate Director of water sanitation and hygiene at UNICEF Kelly Ann Naylor said that it was unacceptable that the most vulnerable communities are unable to use the simplest of methods to protect themselves and their loved ones “The pandemic has highlighted the critical role of hand hygiene in disease prevention It has also stressed a pre-existing problem for many: handwashing with soap remains out of reach for millions of children where they’re born live and learn” she added “Hand hygiene facilities are lacking even in places where they are most needed: nearly half of all schools do not have handwashing facilities with water and soap affecting 900 million school-age children 43 percent of health care settings do not have hand hygiene facilities at points of care where patients are treated the report adds further The COVID-19 pandemic is a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of a virus is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene It not only protects us from contracting the disease but also stops transmission to other people To beat the virus today – and be better prepared for future pandemics – universal access to hand hygiene must become a reality for everyone in all settings especially in health care facilities schools and crowded public spaces the report said It further added that this approach is reiterated in WHO’s recommendations on ensuring universal access to hand hygiene and improving hand hygiene practices to prevent COVID-19 transmission |

NEW DELHI: “The politicisation of the COVID-19 pandemic must be stopped” said World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus adding that when leaders act quickly and deliberately the virus can be suppressed but where there has been political division at the national level where there has been blatant disrespect for science and health professionals confusion has spread and cases and deaths have mounted Expressing concern about the rising number of cases WHO chief in a briefing on COVID-19 said last week saw the highest number of COVID-19 cases reported so far Many countries in the northern hemisphere are seeing a concerning rise in cases and hospitalisations And intensive care units are filling up to capacity in some places particularly in Europe and North America he added He further said that We must do all we can to protect health workers and the best way to do that is for all of us to take every precaution we can to reduce the risk of transmission for ourselves and others No one wants more so-called lockdowns But if we want to avoid them we all have to play our part he stressed WHO chief said “The fight back against this pandemic is everyone’s business We cannot have the economic recovery we want and live our lives the way we did before the pandemic We can keep our kids in school we can keep businesses open we can preserve lives and livelihoods We can do it! But we must all make trade-offs compromises and sacrifices he added He informed that last week WHO conducted its first global e-learning course on health and migration addressing a critical and often neglected topic of global health It’s vital that all countries include refugees and migrants in their national policies as part of their commitment to universal health coverage he asserted |
