more than a week-long peace delegation to Venezuela organized by the US Peace Council and the Committee for International Solidarity in Venezuela COSI The trip was complicated by American Airlines cancelling all flights in and out of the country leaving us scrambling for ways to get there and get home We also arrived in the midst of the attack on Venezuela’s electrical system which caused further complications Our delegation met with community groups political parties and members of the government including a private meeting with President Maduro One theme that became obvious during the visit is that the United States’ imperialism is fundamentally weak It relies on lies and bullying threats to get its way So far Venezuelans are resisting everything the US and its allies are throwing at it but they remain vigilant and concerned about an escalation of attacks Rallying with the women oil workers outside the presidential palace on March 15 2019 in Caracas Venezuela Unites in Response To US Attack on Electrical Grid The attack on Venezuela’s electrical grid began on March 7 and continued for several days The outage made life difficult for Venezuelans Without electricity water pumps could not bring water to people’s homes refrigerators weren’t working and the subway couldn’t run People lined up to fill buckets with water Lights were on but not everywhere When we talked to residents we learned how they came to their neighbor’s aid sharing food and water Despite years of economic difficulties caused by US and allied countries’ sanctions there were no reports of looting or unrest in Caracas Venezuelans remained calm and steady while confronting the challenges of the blackout School and work were cancelled until March 14 but some people were out anyway and a few shops were open Maduro explained that the attack on the electrical grid came from the United States There is evidence it emanated from Houston the home of the company that provided infrastructure for the grid and Chicago There were also attacks on power lines and substations inside Venezuela When a section was repaired it would be attacked again Maduro told us the plan had been for the attack on the electrical grid to cause chaos and confusion in order to provide an excuse for US intervention The plan failed Venezuelans realized this was part of the US-led coup campaign and rather than becoming divided they united Russia confirmed the Venezuela account and said it was supported by other evidence The Grayzone reported on a 2010 memo about regime change in Venezuela which included discussion of an attack on the electrical grid to cause a blackout and chaos The US tried to sabotage the Iranian electrical grid and has used electricity attacks in previous coups so this is part of the US coup playbook During our stay CNN also reported that the drone assassination attempt against President Maduro last August was organized in Colombia and that the US was in close contact with the assassination plotters It was also confirmed by the NY Times that it was the opposition who burned USAID trucks on February 23 at the border the day of the humanitarian aid defeat This corroborates the report by the Grayzone Project the day it occurred The democratically-elected government of President Maduro worked to end the electricity crisis provide people with water and food and make sure buses were running The self-appointed coup’s Juan Gaido worked with the United States which caused the blackout and their hardships Gauido is being investigated for his involvement in the electrical attack He is allied with countries waging an economic war that is causing financial distress and he is calling for foreign military intervention a traitorous action The attack mobilized more people in the US and around the world to oppose the US coup calling for ‘Hands Off Venezuela’ an end to the sanctions and an end to threats of war Another mass march in support of Venezuela is scheduled in Washington DC on March 30 We attended an ongoing rally outside the presidential palace to defend it On Saturday there was a mass protest of tens of thousands of people celebrating the country coming together to confront the attack on their electrical grid People were dancing singing and chanting their support for President Maduro While there were several opposition protests announced when a member of our delegation went to cover them they were not to be found Pro-Bolivarian Process rally on Saturday March 16 2019 in Caracas The US Embassy is Forced to Close On Tuesday the US Embassy in Venezuela was forced to close because it was being used as a center for organizing the ongoing US intervention President Maduro told us how the US openly tried to bribe and threaten officials in his government and in the military and how they threatened his wife and family The US told the opposition to boycott the last election and told candidates not to run against him They knew they would lose an election to Maduro so the plan had always been to falsely claim the election was illegitimate Maduro wants to have a dialogue with the US but the embassy had to close because not only was it undermining his government but it provided justification for the US to intervene on behalf of its diplomatic staff Venezuela plans to have dialogue with the US through its UN representative When the embassy personnel left we received word we were “on our own” The State Department issued a statement describing civil unrest in Caracas saying that Americans could be arrested at any time for no reason They warned people it was too dangerous to come to Venezuela This was echoed by the Airline Pilots Association who told their pilots not to fly to Venezuela because of the dangers The morning of these declarations we went for a walk in Caracas to look for unrest Families were out with their children people were shopping and eating pizza and ice cream Caracas is as active and safe as any big city in the United States Members of our delegation described in this video the calm in Caracas and how the US was falsely claiming civil unrest to manufacture an excuse for US intervention The people of Venezuela are prepared for more struggle building a self-sufficient resistance economy and the will fight to preserve their independence When we talked to Venezuelans one thing they commonly told us was ‘thank you for coming to Venezuela now you can tell people in the United States the truth about our country when your politicians and media lie about us’ The Venezuelan people want a good relationship with the people of the United States President Maduro told us of his love for the United States and how he had driven through Chinatown Little Italy and Harlem in New York visited many cities in the US was offered a contract to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers and loves basketball and Jimi Hendrix Maduro has offered to meet with President Trump to discuss and resolve their differences His Foreign Secretary met with John Bolton — a fruitless meeting but an attempt by Venezuela for dialogue Venezuela wants a positive relationship with the United States but it will not give up its sovereignty independence or pride and is prepared to fight a US coup Hands Of Venezuela March in Washington DC on March 16 2019 By Ted Majdosz Guaido Is the Butt of Jokes In Venezuela Not Legitimate Under the Constitution We were invited to be in the audience of the most widely-watched television show in Venezuela It is a remarkable political education-entertainment show hosted by the president of the National Constituent Assembly Diosdado Cabello The show Con el Mazo Dando loosely translated as “Hitting with a Club” is a weekly five-hour show that combines politics with music and comedy During the show he covered 80 different news stories including a chronology of the electrical attack Cabello uses biting satire Guaido was the punch line of many jokes and his alliance with the hated Trump administration was highlighted Gauido does not have the respect of the people of Venezuela He is becoming of little use to the US coup and will possibly be discarded in the near future While Guaido has overtly committed multiple crimes the Maduro administration seems to have made a conscious decision to not arrest him as his actions are weakening him and exposing the coup’s connection to US and western imperialism One thing that was highlighted to us in Venezuela was that the self-appointment of Guaido violates the Venezuelan Constitution The language of the Venezuelan Constitution is plain regarding when the president of the National Assembly can become president and none of those conditions have been met The coup relies on Article 233 of the Constitution which allows the president of the National Assembly to become president only if the president-elect “becomes permanently unavailable to serve by reason of any of the following events: death resignation removal from office by decision of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice equivalent of impeachment permanent physical or mental disability certified by a medical board designated by the Supreme Tribunal of Justice with the approval of the National Assembly abandonment of his position duly declared by the National Assembly and recall by popular vote” None of these conditions exist And if they did exist the vice president would take power until there is an election Not only is Guaido a self-appointed president but he is illegally self-appointed In a press briefing Elliot Abrams admitted that Guaido is not “able to exercise the powers of the office because Maduro still is there” The State Department has been pressuring the media to call Guaido the “interim president” and not to call him “self-appointed” or “opposition leader” despite the fact that he has no presidential powers and no legitimacy under Venezuelan law Any media that succumbs to this pressure is participating in a dangerous farce that is part of a US-led coup This contrasts with the legitimacy of President Maduro This week international election observers wrote the European Union telling them they were “unanimous in concluding that the elections were conducted fairly that the election conditions were not biased” They described EU claims as “fabrications of the most disgraceful kind” We described in Israel’s largest bank Leumi paid a 400 million dollar fine for similar “criminal activity” that spanned the period from at least 2000 to 2011 Hapoalim Israel’s second largest bank is presently and totally absurd and might he provide some proof to substantiate the claims Many came from avid readers and supporters of Jones’s regular commentary but were aghast at his support of preventing a respected musician from earning a living and they expressed this in no uncertain terms When Jones finally did respond it was to attach a hit piece that came from an ultra-Zionist website full of misquotes quotes out of context and even completely fabricated quotes Rather than sifting through Atzmon’s prolific body of written work to decipher if the accusations against him were legitimate Jones instead chose this piecemeal missive full of lies Realising at that point Jones hadn’t actually read anything by Atzmon I attached a copy of a page from Atzmon’s book The Wandering Who I assumed once he read Atzmon’s thoughts directly versus some bastardised fictional version he would realise his error in judgement and deliver a swift apology This is what an honest journalist a person with integrity would do Astonishingly Owen Jones chose a different path He didn’t admit to his mistake giving him the benefit of the doubt here but rather removed the entire thread or shall I say the جداً عن تلك الجذور التي تأسس عليها بناء الطوائف أنا لم أعرف مثلا أن خالد بن الوليد كان رمزاً سنياً إلا في هذه الحرب و لم أسمع بأن السنة هم أحفاد يزيد ومعاوية إلا في هذه الحرب استمعت في هذه الحرب إلى محطات طائفية كريهة مقيتة من كل الأطراف استمعت إلى خطباء مفوهين يجيدون كل أنواع التحشيد و التحميس و الضخ الطائفي المقيت من كل الأطراف، لكن عقولهم كانت خاوية بائسة مفعمة بالشذوذ عن كل قيم الخير في مباشرة مزايا لا يحصل عليها غيرك من أفراد باقي الطوائف فأنت أمام طائفية مقيتة في ظل هذا التمييز تصاب المواطنة في مقتل، و يتراجع الانتماء للوطن، بينما يتقدم الانتماء للطائفة تلك هي الأرضية التي ينتعش فيها مرض الطائفية والصراع الطائفي تفشي الطائفية لا يعني أنها عصية عن المعالجة بل يمكن معالجتها والبراءة منها لكن شرط العلاج الأول هو الاعتراف بوجودها و الشرط الثاني هو عدم المراوحة عند الأسباب التي Terrorism The real forces responsible for the destruction of many Muslim-majority countries and the current chaos present in many Western countries are not generated by civilian populations or religions but instead by the global oligarchy that engineers and profits from this chaos Whitney WEBB What is without question the worst mass shooting in New Zealand’s history took place on Friday when shooters 28-year-old Australian Brenton Tarrant among them opened fire at two Christchurch mosques Four including Tarrant have been arrested for the heinous act which claimed at least 49 innocent lives Tarrant was responsible for killing more than 40 victims among them several children in a rampage he live-streamed on Facebook sending chills throughout the Muslim community particularly Muslims living in Western countries Tarrant’s motives and ideology laid bare in a 74-page manifesto show a concern over the fertility rates of non-white groups as well as the immigration of non-whites to countries like New Zealand and Australia which he likened to an “invasion” that threatened the white majority in those countries However Tarrant — in his ignorance — failed to grasp that many of the Muslim immigrants he targeted had come to New Zealand after fleeing Western-backed invasions occupations or persecution in their home countries Notable among Tarrant’s views is the fact that he is a clear ethno-nationalist promoting his view that different ethnic groups must be kept “separate unique undiluted in sic unrestrained in cultural or ethnic expression and autonomy” Tarrant also claimed that he doesn’t necessarily hate Muslims and only targeted those Muslims ie immigrants that chose “to invade our lands live on our soil and replace our people” He also stated that he chose to target Muslims because “Islamic nations in particular have high birth rates regardless of race or ethnicity” and to satiate “a want for revenge against Islam for the 1300 years of war and devastation that it has brought upon the people of the West and other peoples of the world” His views are remarkably similar to those of Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik which is unsurprising given that Tarrant named him as an inspiration for the shooting Though many — in the hours after the shooting — have sought to place blame and point fingers at notable demagogues like President Donald Trump or “counter-jihad” alt-right figures like Laura Loomer and Jacob Wohl it is important to place Tarrant’s motivations in context Indeed while Trump’s rise to political power has brought Islamophobic rhetoric into the public sphere in an undeniable way it is a symptom of a much broader effort aimed at propagandizing the people of the United States and other Western countries to support wars in and military occupations of Muslim-majority countries This manufactured Islamophobia largely a product of Western governments and a compliant mass media has sought to vilify all Muslims by maligning the religion itself as terrorism in order to justify the plunder of their countries and deflect attention from their suffering It is a classic “divide and conquer” scam aimed at keeping Westerners divided from Muslims in their own countries and abroad The horrific shooting in Christchurch is a testament to its unfortunate success and pervasiveness as well as a potent reminder that it must be stopped Indeed this manufactured Islamophobia has made it so that Muslims in their home countries are in danger of dying from Western-backed wars and if they flee to the “safer” West they have targets on their backs painted by the very war propaganda used to justify Western military adventurism in Muslim-majority nations Islam the media and “Forever Wars”: Who’s the “real” terrorist Since September 11th and the advent of the “War on Terror” mass media reporting increasingly began to conflate Muslims and Muslim-majority nations with war terrorism and violence in general Indeed 9 out of 10 mainstream news reports on Muslims Islam and Islamic organizations are related to violence and Muslims who are named on mainstream media are all-too-frequently warlords or terrorist leaders This near-constant association of Islam and violence has created the false perception that the religion of Islam by its very nature is violent and that Muslims too must then be violent and thus dangerous This media-driven association has had very real and troubling consequences For instance a 2010 study by the University of Exeter found “empirical evidence to demonstrate that assailants of Muslims are invariably motivated by a negative view of Muslims they have acquired from either mainstream or extremist nationalist reports or commentaries in the media” In other words Islamophobic media reports are directly related to hate crimes targeting Muslims This is no accident as such biased reporting on Muslim-majority nations also began as Western-backed wars in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan sought to put these countries’ natural resources namely their oil and mineral wealth into the hands of American corporations It should be no surprise then that top funders of media outlets that have routinely promoted Islamophobic narratives are also those who have profited considerably from the “War on Terror” and Western-backed regime-change wars in other countries This concerted effort to vilify Muslims has had the potent effect likely by design of reducing empathy among Westerners for the largely Muslim victims of Western military adventurism in Muslim-majority countries Indeed while mainstream news outlets often trumpet the imminent dangers Americans face from “radical Islamic terror” the death toll of innocent people — most of them Muslim — that have been killed by the US-led “War on Terror” is several orders of magnitude greater than the number of Americans who have died from all terror attacks over that same period For instance from 2001 to 2013 an estimated 3380 Americans died from domestic and foreign terrorism including the September 11 attacks as well as acts of domestic terrorism carried out by white nationalists and supremacists If one excludes the September 11 death toll the number of American deaths over that same period stands at around 400 most of them victims of mass-killers who were not Muslim By comparison an estimated 8 million innocent people in Muslim-majority nations died as a result of US policies and wars in the Middle East and North Africa from 2001 to 2015 Yet the magnitude of this loss of life of these “unworthy victims” is minimized by media and government silence and the creation of a climate of Islamophobia in the West has only served to deepen the ease with which mass murder is accepted by the aggressor countries’ populations Beyond the staggering disparity in the death tolls caused by terror groups and Western-backed imperialist wars is the fact that many of these very Western governments that purport to be so has long turned a blind eye to the funding of terror groups by allied states like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates The role of Western money arms and policy in the creation and maintenance of radical Wahhabi terrorist groups is often entirely ignored by Western media portrayals of Muslim-majority nations thereby creating a false image that such violence is endemic to these nations when in fact it is often imported state-sponsored terror These nuances of the situation are rarely heard in the narratives parroted out on mainstream media and those who regularly consume mainstream news sources are more likely than not to support those narratives For that reason it is easy to see how someone like Donald Trump — who is said to watch television for eight hours every day much of it Fox News — has espoused the views that he has Thanks to the manufacturing of Islamophobia of mainstream media racist policies like the so-called “Muslim ban” have found wide support as this false narrative has conflated Islam with violence so often that many have come to believe that only by banning Islam can violence and terrorism in the US be reduced However the recent shooting in Christchurch as well as the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting and other recent acts of domestic terrorism should alert us to the fact that it is the hate manufactured by this false narrative that is itself endangering American lives while also covering up the mass murder that has been perpetrated by the US and other governments around the world for decades Israel’s leading role in stoking ethnonationalism While the realities of post-9/11 America as well as the rise in visibility of white ethnonationalism during the Trump Era have done much to normalize attacks on immigrants the country that has done the most to normalize anti-Muslim terrorism over this same time frame has been the state of Israel Israel from its founding days has long been steeped in neocolonialist ideology that is remarkably similar to the ideological basis behind other settler states like the United States Australia and New Zealand This system of beliefs holds that the native inhabitants of the land — whether the Palestinians the Sioux or the Maori — are “primitive” and incompetent and that the land would have remained “wild” and undeveloped were it not for the “fortunate” appearance of European settlers As MintPressnoted in a previous report on the subject such narratives cast these settlers as both superior and normal while the natives become inferior and abnormal thus obfuscating the settler’s newspaper The Forward For years through its military occupation of Palestine Israel’s government and military have sought to paint all Palestinians including children as “terrorists” or “terrorist sympathizers” Take for example current Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked who wrote in 2014 “This is a war between two people Who is the enemy The Palestinian people …” A more recent example came from former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman who asserted just last year that “no innocent people” live in the Gaza Strip and that every inhabitant in the enclave is somehow connected to Hamas even though nearly half of Gaza’s population are children and teenagers Such rhetoric has become par for the course and numerous examples show that Shaked and Lieberman’s views are increasingly accepted and “normal” in today’s Israel Yet the clearest indication of anti-Muslim terror’s normalization in Israel is the recent rise of Otzma Yehudit or the “Jewish Power” Party This party founded by devotees of radical American-born Rabbi Meir Kahane has now merged — at Netanyahu’s urging — with the Jewish Home Party and stands to become part of Israel’s ruling coalition if Netanyahu manages to win in the country’s upcoming elections In the office of Itamar Ben Gvir one of Otzma Yehudit’s leaders is a framed picture of Baruch Goldstein In an act that bears a striking similarity to the events in Christchurch Goldstein — a long-time devotee of Kahane — entered a mosque in the West Bank city of Hebron in 1994 and opened fire killing 29 and injuring more than 125 worshippers After the act Kahane’s Kach party — the predecessor of Otzma Yehudit — was labeled a terrorist organization by the United States and Israel Despite official condemnation Goldstein’s atrocious act has been the subject of praise and inspiration for subsequent extremists who under Netanyahu’s government have become increasingly normalized Goldstein’s gravestone reads “He gave his life for the people of Israel its Torah and land” and continues to be used as a site of pilgrimage and homage by the very extremists that Netanyahu is openly courting for political gain While the followers of Kahane are making a comeback in Israel several notable Arab political parties have been banned from participating Israel’s upcoming elections with some being accused of “supporting terrorism” owing to their opposition to Israel’s decades-long military occupation of Palestine Yet by elevating clear terror supporters among the ranks of the Jewish Power Party it has become increasingly clear that openly supporting and advocating anti-Muslim terrorism is no bar to legitimacy and political power in today’s Israel No ‘clash of civilizations’ only manipulation and exploitation of differences The tragic and barbaric shooting in Christchurch New Zealand is yet another horrific and glaring reminder that the “divide and conquer” war propaganda that has sought to promote the so-called “clash of civilizations” between targets thanks to the very war propaganda used to justify the destruction of their home countries While the murderer Tarrant had stated that he hoped his horrific crime would help stoke “civil war” in Western countries this tragedy should and must serve as a wake up call for people everywhere that the real forces responsible for the destruction of many Muslim-majority countries and the current chaos present in many Western countries are not generated by civilian populations or religions but instead by the global oligarchy that engineers and profits from this chaos These oligarchs loot from and left under darkness of the night He is reported to have murmured that it was not right that for security reasons the US president was forced to visit in secrecy in the middle of the night a country where the US has invested hundreds of billions of dollars in its stability On the other hand Rouhani informed the Iraqi presidency of his visit a week in advance the visit was publicly announced at the same time Iraqi officials coordinated the schedule of the Iranian President’s trip with their Iranian counterparts Rouhani is due to remain in Iraq for three days to conclude important economic-commercial deals raising the level of commerce between the two countries to 20 billion dollars The conclusion: Iran has prevailed over the US because the Iraqi officials have rejected any unilateral sanctions on Iran insisting on commercial exchange including energy supply and selling Major General Qassem Soleimani achieved Iran’s goal of developing a friendly relationship with Iraq where officials are ready to suspend relations with the US if Trump insists on imposing sanctions on any country dealing with Tehran This achievement and others earned Soleimani Iran’s most prestigious medal of honour “the order of Zulfiqar” awarded by Sayed Ali Khamenei Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif was the first to congratulate Soleimani describing him as “the man who made the Middle East a safer place” It is Soleimani’s second medal the first was “the order of Fath” received in 1989 from the same Khamenei Iran will sell electricity to Iraq and will use dollars and the local currency in its exchange The Islamic Republic has found new ways to counter the US sanctions by building industry infrastructure and railways and by establishing large commercial exchanges with Iraq This will bring more dollars to Iran and will simultaneously help the country rely less on US dollars by doing business in the local currency Trump’s foreign policy and sanctions around the world are forcing countries to find alternatives to the US monetary system and trade Although so far with little impact Europe is introducing a special purpose vehicle SPV to support trade with Iran as an alternative to the US Swift global financial messaging service China Russia India and many other countries dealing with Iran have agreed to carry on their exchanges mainly but not exclusively in local currency to bypass US sanctions Iraq today is divided between a large faction of politicians calling for the total withdrawal of US forces from the country and another which wants to maintain a reduced US force in charge of training and intelligence exchange Both factions want to see most US forces leave the country and can likely reach an agreement on accepting a small specialised force on the ground The Iraqi government would like to strike a balance and maintain both a fair relationship with the US and excellent ties with Iran Trump has two choices He could choose to cut his relationship with Iraq which would amount to shooting himself in the foot The presence of US forces in Iraq is essential to US objectives and hegemony in the Middle East Moreover it is unclear for how long US forces will be able to occupy Syria The alternative would be for Trump to accept the fact that his sanctions against Iran will fail as Iranian-Iraqi energy and commercial deals develop In this case the US President would be accepting the failure of his sanctions and his plan to change the Iranian regime “in a few months” Whatever he decides Trump has lost: the US establishment failed in its attempt to damage Iran and either change its ruling system or bring the country to its knees All Trump has accomplished is to put stress on the Iranian economy bringing hardship to the population
