happening in the world Crimea has taken a bit of a backseat recently Yes the US EU and Canada just added more sanctions on Russia via the odious Magnitsky legislation but this is inconsequential There’s been a flurry of good news coming out of Crimea and the Black Sea recently that bears discussion Let’s start with the most important President Vladimir Putin was in Crimea earlier this week to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the peninsula’s reunification with Russia There he also officially inaugurated two major upgrades to Crimea’s power grid Located in Simferopol and Sevastopol two new power plants will produce 940 megawatts and secure Crimea’s energy needs for now and into the future Power has been Crimea’s Achilles’ heel since breaking off from Ukraine in 2014 It received almost 90 of its power from the mainland In November 2015 the trunk lines into Crimea were sabotaged by Ukrainian nationalist radicals encouraged by President Petro Poroshenko plunging it into darkness as winter took hold Does this sound familiar A place that defies US edicts geopolitically is first hit with a full trade embargo sanctions and threatened militarily by proxies before having its electricity shut off Cough Venezuela Cough And there are reports that the US has game-planned a similar fate for Iran as well For Crimea it was easy because of the single-point-of-failure the trunks from the mainland For Venezuela it was as well with the Guri dam which affected nearly 70 percent of the country So Putin timing the fifth anniversary of reunification with the announcement of the plants moving to full operational status was yet another smooth bit of international political maneuvering A not-so-subtle poke in the eye of the Gang Who Can’t Sanction Straight in DC as well as lame duck Poroshenko Elections are at the end of the month and this celebration by Russia and Crimea will not sit well with many Ukrainians especially the diaspora here in the US which is virulently anti-Putin in my experience Secure and stable power generation is a hallmark of a first world territory Without that economic growth and stability are impossible This is why to first help stabilize the situation in Crimea after the blackout Russia brought in 400 MW of power across the Kerch Strait from Krasnodor Tying Crimea to the mainland via the Kerch Strait bridge was a masterstroke by Putin The initial power lines were simply a necessity For those that complain he isn’t doing enough to counter US and European aggression need only look at the Kerch Strait bridge Not only did the Russians not seek international approval given the nearly universal refusal to recognize Crimea as Russian they built the thing in a time frame that defies description Imagine if this had been an EU project They would still be debating the initial engineering plans and the political effects on some protected minority Not only does it open up the Eastern Black Sea to trade via Crimea but it ends the use of the Sea of Azov as a potential staging ground for naval provocations as last fall’s incident proved Ukraine is cut off from acting aggressively and cannot count on any help from the US and Europe Moreover Crimea is now permanently Russia’s And every bit of infrastructure Russia builds there ties the two further together and weakens any bonds Crimea had with Ukraine The resultant growth and modernization will make its way economically and culturally back into southern Ukraine and erode the hard border over time This is far more important than striking out and metaphorically punching Poroshenko in the mouth that many of Putin’s detractors wish for Presidents change after all Patience and attrition is how you beat an aggressive distant enemy like the US To remind everyone just how insane the Trump White House has become on matters international no less than Vice President Mike Pence lobbied Germany to provoke another naval incident at the Kerch Strait If there was ever an example of how little Trump’s gang of moldy neocons think of Europe it is this bit of news In effect Pence was saying “We can’t start a war with Russia because it would go nuclear but you can because Russia can’t live without your trade” This coming after the US unilaterally pulled out of the INF treaty and is now flying nuclear bombers to eastern Europe The message is clear If the EU doesn’t get with this open-ended belligerent program against Russia and China of John Bolton’s they will be the ones paying the price when chaos breaks out On the other side there is Putin building bridges pipelines power plants and roads He’s making it clear what the future holds not only for Europe but the Middle East central Asia and India We will defend Crimea at all costs develop it not only into a tourist destination but also a major trade hub as well You are more than welcome to join us But we don’t need you These power plants will raise Crimea’s power output well beyond its current needs allowing first export of power as well as providing the foundation for future growth And as if it weren’t coordinated in any way the Chinese on the morning of Putin’s speech announced that Crimea would be an excellent fit for investment projects attached to the Belt and Road Initiative BRI That’s according to the head of the association of Chinese compatriots on the peninsula Ge Zhili “Our organization is bolstering cooperation ties exchanges and friendly contacts with the Crimean society” he said at an event dedicated to the fifth anniversary of Crimea’s reunification with Russia which was held in the Russian Embassy in Beijing on Monday It is also ready to contribute to the establishment of “reliable partner ties” and the explanation of legal details of business cooperation with Crimea Ge Zhili said “The Chinese society hopes for the development of friendly cooperation with Crimea we are ready to overcome difficulties for fruitful results” Again this is a direct challenge to the US who has Crimea under strict sanctions in the West China is happy now to move forward with integrating Crimea into its plans It’s just another example of how Russia and China simply ignore Trump’s fulminations and move on I can’t wait until I get to write this article all over again this time about North Korea now that Bolton has thrown Russian and Chinese assistance in getting North Korea to the negotiating table back in their face by destroying the Hanoi talks This announcement is not to be underestimated given that Chinese Premier Xi Jinping is in Rome this week to open up relations with the new Italian government Five Star Movement’s Leader Luigi Di Maio said he would welcome becoming a part of BRI much to the consternation of Trump German Chancellor Angela Merkel as well as his coalition partner Lega Leader Matteo Salvini It’s already well known that Salvini is interested in ending sanctions on Crimea and re-opening trade with Russia Italy is desperate for new markets and opportunities currently stifled under the euro itself as well as Germany’s insistence on austerity hollowing out Italy’s economy and its future prospects These issues as well as energy security ones are coming to a head this year with Brexit the European Parliamentary elections in May and the completion of the Nordstream 2 pipeline later this year As Putin continues to polish his Black Sea jewel Europe has to decide if it is going to continue playing the US’s games over Ukraine or begin the next phase of its independence Salvini will lead a Euroskeptic revolt within the European Parliament in May It may be big enough to finally defy Merkel and end EU sanctions on Russia over Crimea At that point the US will also have a choice burn down the world economy with even model of the working-class internationalism that can build a more just world fter nine days of picketing in below freezing temperatures striking workers in Erie Pennsylvania returned to work recently under a 90-day agreement The 1700 strong United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America UE strike quickly drew national attention Senator Bernie Sanders declared his support for the union and even invited the president of the local to speak at his campaign rally As “the first major US manufacturing strike of the Trump era” according to The Nation Erie brought renewed focus to the struggles of American industrial workers who have faced job loss wage stagnation and weakened bargaining power as a result of corporate globalization But Erie isn’t just a reminder of the problem It also points us toward the solution For decades UE has been a leading example of global labor solidarity The union’s commitment to internationalism offers our greatest hope for an alternative to the existing global system Since the 1980s policymakers and the corporate interests that they represent have designed a globalized world that places profit before people and planet This “neoliberal” global system allows capital but not people to move freely across borders Because corporations can shop around for the most exploitable labor and environmental conditions countries desperate for investment are pitted against one another in a global “race to the bottom” While right-wingers like Donald Trump have tried to paint this as a contest between America and the rest of the world the true struggle is between capital and the working class regardless of nation The key to victory is therefore to unite workers across borders UE does just that UE was one of the first unions to recognize and respond to the threat of neoliberal globalization During the run-up to the North American Free Trade Agreement NAFTA it built a unique alliance with the Frente Autentico del Trabajo FAT of Mexico that has served as an exemplar of transnational labor solidarity ever since UE and the FAT remain structurally independent but play active roles in each other’s strikes campaigns and organizing drives They exchange rank-and-file members to promote dialogue between countries launched a joint education center along the US-Mexico border and have even run mutual fundraising campaigns Most innovatively UE and the FAT have leveraged the NAFTA side accord on labor to pressure each other’s countries on labor legislation Along with other partners in Mexico and Canada the FAT submitted a complaint to the Mexican government that North Carolina’s restrictions on public sector collective bargaining violate NAFTA Though existing trade agreements are far from supportive of workers’ rights the UE-FAT alliance points to ways to leverage the meager protections that do exist UE also recognizes that working class interests go beyond the narrow set of demands that can be won from management at the negotiating table It played an active role in the multi-issue Global Justice movement participating in multiple World Social Fora and sitting for some time on the Coordinating Committee for the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance Continuing the fight for Global Justice today UE opposes the Trump administration’s “NAFTA 20” citing not only weak enforcement of labor protections but also the extension of drug-patent provisions that increase the costs of lifesaving medicine inadequate reforms of the Investor-State Dispute Settlement mechanism and lack of protections for women indigenous communities and the environment In contrast to the AFL-CIO’s dismal if slightly improving record UE has also consistently opposed US imperial ventures abroad It is an active member of US Labor Against the War founded in 2003 in response to the invasion of Iraq has vocally opposed American interference in Venezuela and was the first national US union to endorse the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel While other unions have fallen into the self-defeating trap of responding to neoliberal globalization with a return to nationalist protectionism UE remains committed to building an alternative internationalist model The United Steel Workers for example welcomed the Trump administration’s decision to implement steel and aluminum tariffs UE condemned the move: “We are not opposed to tariffs or trade agreements in all circumstances… However we firmly oppose using them as a cudgel to extract concessions from trading partners and allies and to bolster corporate profits at the expense of workers’ living standards and the health and safety of our communities” UE’s deep commitment to internationalism is worthy of replication But to do so requires learning another lesson from UE’s record: global solidarity is not dictated — it’s built UE does this in many ways The internationalist perspective is baked into all communications and political education initiatives Regular collaborative campaigns build solidarity through action And exchange visits between rank-and-file members encourage relationship-building at the grassroots level Recognizing the singular role of immigrants in building global solidarity UE makes concerted efforts to connect members of partner unions with workers of similar national origin in the United States In one instance the visit of an FAT organizer was the deciding factor in the successful unionization of a factory composed mostly of workers of Mexican origin UE is not perfect But its record of solidarity and the steps that it takes to build that solidarity at the rank-and-file level are valuable models While the strike in Erie is over for now the wider conditions that led to it — a model of globalization that seeks to divide and conquer the working class — live on To win that battle will require more than a single strike It will require the construction of a global movement based in solidarity of the working class believes that the research it conducts is necessary because “previous studies it has funded which have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal indicate that some vaccines contain impurities or lack the active ingredients they claim to contain” Nature points out that “Some scientists in Italy are up in arms over a donation from the organization that oversees the nation’s professional biology qualification to an advocacy group that opposes the country’s policy of mandatory childhood vaccination” This part is confusing: Why would any group or any scientist oppose more safety studies regarding vaccinations Wouldn’t professionals on both sides of the coin be in support of as much vaccine safety testing as possible ONB president Vincenzo D’Anna told Nature in an e-mail interview that there is a need for truly independent vaccine research because in his opinion work conducted in public laboratories and at universities is usually influenced or funded by companies that produce vaccines “The goal is to contribute to complete the biological and chemical analyses on vaccines” he said in the interview part of which the ONB has published in its Bulletin Again Nature points out that many scientists dismiss the need for more vaccine safety testing and that they are upset That being said it’s a comforting thought that ONB disagrees and that they are supporting this type of toxoid as carrier Toxoids are created by treatments with formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde that should remove toxicity keeping intact their ability to stimulate protective antibodies against original toxins We were expecting to find the three toxoids and the other antigens not modified by treatment with formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde to separate the antigens from each other and to be digestible by the enzyme specific for proteins trypsin We have found instead a real polymer insoluble and indigestible that we supposed to be the set of antigens chemically bound together has to be defined if this is present as an aggregate of the individual antigens or a single macromolecule on which we can find in literature partial information regarding the single antigens This macromolecule could not be recognized in any way by the protein databases and in fact it turned out to be a solid compound of an unknown chemical structure Proteins solubility and their digestion ie the capacity to divide them into small peptide fragments are two typical proteins characteristics that not only makes it possible to study them through some specific analysis methods but are also fundamental for the interaction with the immune system to create protective antibodies because if the protein structure is heavily altered from the original one the new antibodies result completely different from those that are able to attack the original antibodies causing illnesses Since this polymer we have encountered derived from the antigenic mix is not only different for its spatial conformation but it’s chemically different so we can state that we are not facing antigens similar to the original ones but in the form of a compound with an unknown and unpredictable toxicity and efficacy source The fact that the vaccine antigens were not detected is seriously concerning and so is the fact that of the 65 signs of chemical contaminants only 35 are known This was only the first phase of this safety testing as a second analytical study with standard controls will be released 7 chemical toxins were also identified and the group states that these toxins have a structure that could probably be ليس أننا دوما على صواب، بل أن لدينا قابلية التعلم من الخطأ و قابلية التحسين رسالتنا كبشر ليست في تكرار ما قاله آخرون قبلنا بل في محاولة الفهم و الإضافة على ما قالوه تكرار الاقتباس دون محاولة الشرح و الإضافة هو نقل ميت لفكرة حية إنه نقلٌ ميتٌ إذا لم نجعل الأفكار التي ننقلها تزهر خيرا ومعرفة و إشراقات جديدة تحفز من يقرؤها على إعادة التفكير، أي إعادة النظر بروح منفتحة على الفهم و التفهم كم يوجد من أفكار أسيء لها من كثرة تكرارها؟ كم تم تكرار عبارات مثل “دكتاتورية البروليتاريا” من قبل ثورويين في رؤوسهم كثير من الثورة و قليل من العقل، حتى جعلوا من دكتاتورية البروليتاريا رمزاً للحرب على كل ما هو متحضر و متمدن و عقلاني؟! و كم من صراخ نحو “الجهاد” أصاب معنى الجهاد في مقتل عندما صار يعني القتل على أيادي جماعات من المتطرفين المتعطشين للدماء! بينما الجهاد في جوهره جهاد النفس و كبح انفلاتاتها كي تتيح للعقل أن يمضي نحو رؤية الواقع و اعادة بنائه في رؤوسنا على نحو أحسن من جديد تابعوا ما يكتب على النت و ستلاحظون مدى الإقتباسات المرتبة و المنمقة التي اقتبست من مفكرين كبار أو من كتب مقدسة دون أي شرح أو ربط لها بمتغيرات الواقع ساعدتنا محركات البحث وخاصة غوغل في تسهيل الحصول على هذه الاقتباسات و نشرها، لكن معظمها بقيت اقتباسات ميتة لا روح فيها غوغل لا يمكن أن يساعدنا على بث الروح فيما نقتبس فالروح تأتي من المعاني التي نسوقها لفهم الواقع و التصالح مع الواقع و التفاهم فيما بيننا إذا لم نتغلب على غريزة حب الانتصار بأي ثمن، حتى لو كان الثمن التضحية بالحقيقة، إذا لم نتجاوز الأنا الأنانية فينا، إذا لم نخرج من مرض الغرق بالذات نحو فهم العالم الموضوعي، أي الموضوع أمامنا وليس الذي نتصوره في رؤوسنا، فلا قيمة لكل ما نقتبسه و نستشهد به و نبروزه على صفحاتنا فقط عندما تكون لدينا غاية الفهم، و إرادة إغناء العقل و التفكير بأفكار جديدة، يصبح للاقتباس مكانه الطبيعي غير هذا فالاقتباس منقوص الشرح و التبرير لا معنى ولا قيمة له إنه ببساطة اقتباس ميت لفكرة حية العقل من عقال عَقَلَ البعير أي ربطه في الانكليزية العقل reason سبب؛ أي فهم الأسباب خلف ما نلحظه من ظواهر الحبّاك أو الحبّال يربط الخيطان أو الحبال ببعضها، أي يشبكها و يعقلها ببعضها لتكوين شبكة صيد جيدة شبكة الصيد المربوطة ببعضها جيداً تصطاد السمك بشكل أفضل عقولنا شبكات مفاهيم، أو شبكات صيد تلتقط الأفكار الجيدة و تعيد إنتاجها مع غيرها من أفكار تسكن عقولنا إذا كانت شبكات عقولنا محبوكة الأفكار جيداً استوعبنا و أعدنا إصدار الأفكار التي نلتقطها على نحو مترابط منسجم مع غايات التقدم في المعرفة الإنسانية، و فهم الواقع، و التفاهم فيما بيننا لسوء الحظ فإن أدوات العقل التي يمكن أن تساعدنا على التقاهم ضعيفة جداً كيف نتفاهم و كل طرف يتقدم
