story of failed spy Eli Cohen Cohen was inserted into Syria in 1961 under a false name and was discovered and hanged by Syrian military intelligence in 1965 In another context this story would have been deemed a disaster for the intelligence agency which recruited this spy Instead Israel has managed to spin and fabricate a large volume of lies about Cohen’s ostensible exploits Eli Cohen Israeli secret service agent State of Israel Wikimedia Commons Whenever Israeli intelligence suffers defeats and failures it resorts to its past successes and the relationship between the Mossad and Hollywood depiction of Cohen: the book “Our Man in Damascus” which clearly was a Mossad propaganda work was also made into a movie years ago But Arabs are now more alert to Western distortions and fabrications and have been quite quick to respond to the blatant inaccuracies and lies in the new Netflix series One Syrian writer counted 10 historical mistakes in the series while others said that the movie sets had no resemblances to Damascus whatsoever As these critics make clear the entire premise of the Eli Cohen fictitious plot is a figment of the Mossad’s imagination: that Cohen penetrated deep into Syrian society and government and that he was able during his first phase while posing as a Syrian immigrant in Argentina to befriend none other than Amin Al-Hafiz who later served in key positions in Syria Israeli and Western accounts talk about him befriending “the president of Syria” in an Israeli TV interview with Cohen’s widow they even referred to him as Amin Al-Asad confusing Syrian leaders There is only one problem with that story As Syrian historian Sami Moubayed writes in Gulf News Col Amin Al-Hafiz denied being stationed as a military attaché during the time when Cohen was there Al-Hafiz arrived in Argentina in 1962 after Cohen’s departure And he was not in power when Cohen was in Syria he was in fact an interior minister and later served as a member of a ruling council Netflix “The Spy” trailer There is not even a shred of evidence that Al-Hafiz ever met Cohen except in his prison cell because he wanted to ask him questions about his failed mission And Hafiz denied categorically those claims of acquaintance they were made into a friendship in the Netflix series in more than one TV interview The Netflix series also draws upon the worst Zionist Orientalist sexist portrayal of Arabs including typical Israeli sexual humiliation of Arabs There is a scene where as soon as Amin Al-Hafiz meets Cohen Hafiz’s wife a conservative woman from Aleppo in real life immediately reaches over and squeezes Cohen’s genitals Collapsing Myth Once you expose the lies about Al-Hafiz the entire Cohen myth collapses In the 1960s and 1970s the Syrian Bath regime did assist the Mossad’s propaganda about Cohen The Bathists of Syria who had hated Al-Hafiz due to a bitter factional feud did not want to tell the truth and deny that Hafiz ever met Cohen They were not displeased that Israeli propaganda embarrassed Al-Hafiz who later defected to Iraq and supported Saddam Husayn against the Asad regime The Netflix series even introduces the founder of the Bath Party Michel Aflak to the story claiming that he not only knew Cohen but proposed that Cohen hold a party for key leaders on the night of the coup of 1963 Aflak in the Netflix rendition is a drinking partying man while in reality he was an austere ascetic known for spending evenings in his modest home Much was made by Israeli propaganda of Cohen’s friendship with a senior Syrian military officer Abdul-Karim Zahr Ad-Din Again there is absolutely no evidence that Cohen ever met him or even saw him As a 1965 court ruling published in the Syrian paper Ath-Thawrah shows Cohen knew a nephew of his Madhi Zahr Ad-Din but the latter was a recruit who was later discharged and held a low clerical post in the Ministry of Municipal and Rural affairs What kind of secret information would an acquaintance with this employee produce It is true that Cohen established a friendship with an employee at the Ministry of Information but the employee was hardly the senior official that Mossad’s accounts made him to be This Ministry of Information employee George Sayf did introduce him to a few friends but none were in top government posts as the Israeli accounts claimed Netflix trailer for “The Spy” And the notion that top military officers were escorting Cohen to the front and sharing with him classified information is as laughable as current claims by Western correspondents in Beirut that top military fighters of Hizbullah share top intelligence secrets with Zionist Western correspondents It is true that Cohen once visited the Al-Himmah area in the southern part of the Golan Heights but there is no evidence that he obtained any secret information And as Syrian journalist Ibrahim Hmaydi pointed out in the international Arabic paper Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat recently Cohen operated in Syria before the Bathist coup of 1966 and the new regime changed all military plans and personnel leading to the 1967 war Newspaper Smuggler It was in Israeli interest to claim that Cohen’s espionage was so crucial that it contributed to its decisive victory in 1967 But the reasons for that outcome are well-known and had nothing to do with secrets It was because Arab armies were woefully ill-prepared and Israel had a huge advantage of Western military and financial support The only evidence of Cohen’s usefulness to Mossad was that he would smuggle Syrian newspapers from Damascus in shipments of Syrian artifacts But the brilliant Mossad could have obtained Syrian newspapers from Lebanon with great ease and without any need for dangerous missions and the use of moustaches for disguises Israeli propaganda also claimed that Amin Hafiz who he never met offered him the post of deputy minister of defense And it’s common for Western accounts of Cohen to mention that that he almost assumed this title But Arab critics are pointing out a problem with that story: The position of deputy minister of defense did not exist in Syria until after the coup of Hafidh Al-Asad in 1970 The series also puts the chief of Syrian military intelligence Ahmad Suwaydani in Argentina at the time of Cohen’s stay when he never served there It also claims Ahmad Suwaydani was acquainted with Cohen when in reality he was the one who caught him Israeli Mossad-Netflix propaganda also carries a purposeful classical Israeli sexual insults to Arabs: the story of Cohen insists that Cohen had 17 or more Damascene female lovers that he was one of the most eligible bachelors in Syria’s capital city He was Israeli after all and Israeli are supposed to be — according to Israeli propaganda — sexually irresistible But how would Israel know that Cohen after all was its only source in Damascus Either Cohen invented the idea that he was a sexual magnet for Syrian women as the Netflix series showed or that Israeli intelligence made this up after his hanging in order to compensate its ultimate humiliation: having a spy get caught tried and hanged Israeli intelligence has suffered many losses over the years There was the botched assassination attempt of Khalid Mishal in Amman in 1997 the assassination of Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh in Dubai in 2010 when Dubai Chief of police released the pictures of all the members of the Mossad hit team and they were circulated worldwide There are also the failures of Mossad in the face of Hizbullah and the subsequent Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday evening made clear not only his extensive efforts to bring about a unity government between the premier’s Likud party and the rival Blue and White led by Benny Gantz but also the specific proposal he had put to the two leaders Rivlin said that he had suggested to Gantz and Netanyahu a legal change to the position of “interim prime minister” that would grant the officeholder “full power” in the case the prime minister could not carry out his duties Such a change could theoretically allow Netanyahu to take a leave of absence if he is formally charged in the trio of graft cases against him enabling Gantz to avoid serving in a government with a prime minister who is under indictment Netanyahu is facing a hearing next week with the attorney general ahead of might work Rivlin said he had suggested a power sharing government arrangement under which government authority would be equally distributed between the two rival parties — and he introduced a fairly unfamiliar word into the conversation “I offered both candidates the establishment of a paritetic government” he said using an adopted Hebrew legalese term explaining “That would mean a government of equals in which neither bloc would have an advantage” While not claiming a spot in the contemporary English lexicon the word “paritetic” has roots in Reformation Europe deriving from the English word “parity” and originally used to describe a municipal power-sharing arrangement between Protestants and Catholics In the southern German town of Ravensberg a “paritetic” government emerged in the 17th century in which there was an equal distribution of public offices between the Catholics and the Protestants The city council was half Protestant and half Catholic and for a period there was even a Catholic and a Protestant mayor at the same time The system of governance was eventually approved in the Peace of Westphalia treaties which established a number of “paritetic” towns of joint Catholic and Protestant leadership across the region Having since faded from political parlance the phrase was revived and became widely used in Israel to describe the power-sharing agreement in the country’s first non-war unity government which emerged after the 1984 elections The agreement came about when the Labor party then called the Alignment led by Shimon Peres won 44 Knesset seats in the 120-seat Knesset and the Yitzhak Shamir-led Likud won 41 seats but neither gained a majority of recommendations forcing the two to cobble together a national unity government in which they rotated the premiership According to Prof Gideon Rahat of Jerusalem’s Hebrew University and the Israel Democracy Institute think tank the arrangement was specifically needed because neither Labor nor Likud could form a coalition without the other and therefore the government needed the constant support of both factions “The parity in terms of ministers between each party bloc meant that both sides had an automatic veto and were therefore forced to govern together” Rahat said “In previous and successive unity governments there has always been one side with a majority When there isn’t an arrangement must be made to keep the sides equal and together” When Netanyahu failed to form a majority coalition after Rivlin tapped him following April’s elections Israelis were sent back to the polls The September 17 elections saw Netanyahu’s Likud and Gantz’s Blue and White parties almost evenly matched again and this time neither bloc with a viable path to a majority If 61 or more of the 120 MKs had recommended one candidate Rivlin would almost certainly have entrusted that person with the task of building a coalition as he did when Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu party backed Netanyahu in April But with no one receiving 61 this time like in 1984 there was no clear guideline for Rivlin to follow and few legal limitations “He is basing the model on 1984 because that’s all we’ve got as a relevant example” Rahat said In 1984 however as well as an equal number of ministers Peres and Shamir agreed to also share the premiership on a rotation basis whereby Peres served for two years followed by Shamir “This appears to be what Rivlin is proposing now even though he didn’t specifically mention a rotation” Rahat said There may be a reason for that he added because while the Israel have shown they have enough power to be on the political map but not enough to change it After election results came in last week Netanyahu spoke of the need for a “strong Zionist government” code for Jewish only and labeled the Joint List “anti-Zionists” Similarly the Blue and White Party like the majority of Israelis maintains that Israel is the national home of the Jewish people where Jews have a unique right to self-determination Blue and White ran on an anti-Netanyahu platform during its campaign the party championed pluralism and insisted it would push back on Israel’s discriminatory Jewish Nation-State Law Ultimately however the Jewish Nation-State formalizes precisely what they believe in They are emotionally and ideologically attached to the notion that Israel must be a state that prioritizes Jewish rights over those of non-Jewish citizens No matter how liberal they are or claim to be this fact always trumps the other leaving hundreds of thousands of Palestinian citizens inherently deprived of equal rights and denied a path to achieving them A recent poll by the Israel Democracy Institute shows 76 percent of Palestinian citizens favor the Joint List joining a ruling coalition and having their representatives serve as ministers in the government Nearly half of Jewish citizens 49 percent oppose the idea This renders meaningless the claim that Palestinian citizens are anti-Zionists or rejectionists since they are demonstrably taking an active part in the political process After two elections in one year both of which failed to produce a clear majority the country is in a political deadlock the situation reflects the predicament of both the liberal Zionist model and the obstinacy of Israeli consensus A Jewish ethno-state cannot by definition also be a liberal democratic one — particularly when its population includes a large indigenous minority with a separate national and cultural identity Since the founding of the state “Russia’s Gas Web Ensnares Europe” Foreign Policy argues The Heritage Foundation details “The Russia-Venezuela Axis: Using Energy for Geopolitical Advantage” Russia is a “global energy powerhouse that’s much more than a petro-state” the Conversation explains “Russia’s Latest Geopolitical Power Grab Is Going Unnoticed” claimed Oil Price last year It really isn’t going unnoticed given the amount of articles out there on this topic But we really don’t see this kind of analysis when it comes to the US and its ability and desire to exploit natural resources to achieve geostrategic outcomes In fact when the shoe is on the other foot the headlines are wholly different “US Natural Gas is the New Global Soft-Power Weapon” explained the National Interest earlier this year Let’s face it lexical semantics matter When it comes to the US natural gas is a soft power weapon which it should weaponise In the case of Russia natural gas is being weaponized and this should concern and worry us all And no I am not overstating this at all Consider this paragraph from the aforementioned National Interest article which reads: “The United States now uses natural gas converted to liquid natural gas LNG from shale deposits in states such as Texas North Dakota and Pennsylvania to transform geopolitics Lower LNG prices stymie terrorist-financing budgets in Tehran and lower the ability for Vladimir Putin’s Russia to weaponize their energy assets for geopolitical adventures in Ukraine Crimea Syria Central Asian and the Middle East” Also on rtcom Energy supernetwork: Putin approves Russia’s new gas pipeline megaproject to China via Mongolia To put it bluntly corporate media are essentially saying the following: “Russia weaponises energy resources for geopolitical adventures The United States has a duty to weaponize energy resources in turn for its own geopolitical adventures” Seriously the US can export Liquefied Natural Gas LNG to countries on Russia’s border such as Poland but Russia should not be attempting to develop a natural gas pipeline with Germany how scandalous by the way As much as Trump is a Russian asset if you are still naïve enough to believe that this is one area that even he seeks to heavily disrupt and further alienate Russia over As much as the US president has stated he wants to “protect” Germany from Russia I still feel as though Germany is old and wise enough to make these kinds of decisions for itself “The United States simply cannot allow Russia to dominate Europe’s energy future” said Ted Cruz a sponsor of a bill implementing sanctions targeting firms that worked on the Russia-led pipeline project Seriously why even bother making the accusations against Russia in relation to the use of natural resources as a geopolitical tool to further one’s agenda when the US is notorious for doing just that These accusations are meaningless when the accuser lives in a glass house throwing tiny pebbles out into an open garden full of hypocrisy and double standards Also on rtcom US-Russia gas war drives European energy prices to 10-year low In this sense geopolitics is more than just a global chess game: it is a sports game The teams are East v West and we must pick a side You are either with us or against us Our failures to secure the transition of puppet governments in Syria and Iran as well as our inability to maintain puppet governments in Iraq and Syria mean that Russia will sooner or later start to fill the void But – and correct me if I’m wrong – if Russia following a foreign policy agenda of its own is inherently bad it would have to make that same foreign policy agenda of the United States equally bad In the case of the US through official documents and leaked cables we actually know the foreign policy agenda and its relation to natural resources We even know that powerful people support the use of extremist terror groups to achieve those ends At no stage is this deemed scandalous or worthy of discussion If we’re doing it it’s okay If we suspect Russia is doing it sound the alarm and encourage the US to pursue an even greater geostrategic policy of weaponizing natural resources to counter and contain Russia Think your propaganda The dangers of using legislatures to write history are even greater when as in this case the purpose of the resolution is polemical The general idea of the text is that Europeans must remember their dreadful past in order not to repeat it in the future: everyone knows that the European project was born in the ruins of the Second World War But the goal of this resolution is to recalibrate the usual memory of the Nazis and the Holocaust to put the memory of Communist totalitarianism on an equal footing with Nazism Communism the resolution says was Nazism’s ideological twin and the USSR shares equal guilt with Germany for starting the war With its 31 references to the Soviet Union communism and Stalinism as against only 19 references to Nazism and Nazi Germany the resolution complains that awareness needs to be raised of the crimes of Communism It also repeatedly alleges by making no fewer than five references to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact of 23 August 1939 that the war “was started as an immediate result of the notorious Nazi-Soviet treaty on non-aggression… whereby two totalitarian regimes that shared the goal of world conquest divided Europe into two zones of influence” Also on rtcom Ideals that won victory are still the greatest of ideals by George Galloway The authors of the resolution perhaps do not realize that they are rejecting the findings of the Nuremberg trials which elsewhere they quote approvingly The Nazi leaders were put on trial for the crime of planning and executing a war of aggression no other state was accused or convicted of this When the chief prosecutor the American Robert Jackson rose to make his opening statement he referred to the privilege of opening “the first trial in history for crimes against the peace of the 23 August 1939 but instead a year earlier on 28-29 September 1938 when to their eternal shame Britain and France agreed with Italy and Germany that Hitler could dismember Czechoslovakia This duly happened when Hitler seized first the Sudetenland and then in March 1939 the whole of Bohemia and Moravia ie including Prague It was at this stage that Britain and France tried to retrieve the situation they had created through their own cowardice by issuing their guarantee to Poland and threatening war if Germany attacked that country In the months that followed Britain France and the Soviet Union entered into uneasy negotiations to try to conclude an anti-Hitlerite alliance Distrust was at its maximum because the Soviets were convinced that the capitalist powers had been actively trying at Munich to deflect Hitler to attack them in the East Nonetheless Stalin announced in secret negotiations in August 1939 that he was prepared to deploy one million Soviet soldiers to counter the German threat This was more manpower than Hitler had and it would have stopped him in his tracks: if this plan had been adopted the war would never have broken out The plan failed because of Polish intransigence The Soviets’ proposed strategy required the stationing of some of their massive deterrence force on Polish territory: there was little point pretending to defend Poland without any troops there Yet Poland’s hatred of the Soviet Union was too great So just as Churchill is supposed to have said to Neville Chamberlain after Munich “You were given the choice between war and dishonour You chose dishonour and you will have war” so one could say today to Poland “You had the choice between Soviet troops and war you chose war and you got Soviet troops” in 1945 The collapse of the negotiations in the summer of 1939 convinced the Soviets that the West was plotting against them with Poland To be sure the signature of the non-aggression Pact between Stalin and Hitler was a cynical move in a grotesque game of diplomatic poker played out between the great powers But as the various sides danced suspiciously around each other there was one certain quantity in a sea of unknowns: Hitler was going to strike again soon and was going to launch a war to get his way The idea that it was Stalin who was instead determined to start a war occurred to no one at the time nor in the years that followed It is pure fiction Poland’s refusal to accept the Soviet plan is perhaps explained by her ambiguous relationship to Hitler She had signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany in 1934 just as Latvia and Estonia signed non-aggression pacts with Germany in June 1939 There is no mention of these pacts in the European Parliament resolution Much worse Poland had been an active participant in the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia in 1938 when she joined Nazi forces in seizing parts of Czech territory the Silesian city of Teschen Cieszyn Naturally the resolution does not mention this uncomfortable fact either Also on rtcom 50 years on the world and not just France still misses Charles de Gaulle In truth the resolution is nothing but a tawdry piece of Russophobia Not content with distorting history it also distorts the present by alleging that Russia today “continues to whitewash communist crimes and glorify the Soviet totalitarian regime” No evidence is provided for this claim which is contradicted by the ceremony held in 2017 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution when President Putin inaugurated a ‘wall of grief’ a monument commemorating the victims of Communist terror In 2008 he and then-President Medvedev attended the state funeral of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn the author of ‘The Gulag Archipelago’ whom Putin had met on several occasions before his death One is tempted to get angry at such a dismal text But one should console oneself that because the resolution is written in the lugubrious and impenetrable
